Here's a work-in-progress. I'm not sure how intelligible the vocoded parts are though...

Aw go on! Have a critique - it's a work in progress but the main issue at the moment is making the vocoder bits sound intelligible enough. I can't really judge for myself, as I wrote the lyrics, you know?

The thing is, there's a rather nice piece of music trying to get out - but it's suffocated by a severe case of overproduction, too much reverb and too many things set to '11'. This piece instantly made me think of two of my favourite artists: Ryuichi Sakamoto and Air. The underlying music track is wonderful, but you need to dial it all back, lose 85% of the reverb and return to the old adage: when in doubt simplify. Strip it all back and rebuild the track thinking minimally. The bass and the chords will go a long way towards getting you to your destination - don't be tempted to chuck everything in just because you can.

The vocoder part perhaps needs the most brutal treatment. Lose almost all of the reverb (this will immediately make it more coherent) and then calm the effect down (not so much - a good vocoded track never swamps it's source signal). You might want to listen to 'Hide and Seek' by the beautiful Imogen Heap. Vocoding done 'right', imo. O Superman, by Laurie Anderson is also well worth a listen.

You have a great track here - you just need to revisit it with your Producer's hat on - and don't be afraid to be hard on yourself.

Does anyone here use Ableton Live? I'm thinking of learning how to, you see.

Yes. I don't DJ but I have a rough idea how.

I use it as an improvised composition tool.

OK, here's a finished demo. It's not perfect, but it's got all the layers I want, plus I've tweaked it a little so as to make it less hectic (or at least tried).

I'm still not 100% happy with my voice on some parts (my high head voice is pretty flaky - need to practice more).

Also, last night a local radio station GTFM played this. Which is nice.

Wow - see what a bit of creative restraint can achieve? I much prefer this remix - although I'd still like to be able to understand the vocoded sections without the aid of printed lyrics. It's a great track, and you've made some vast improvements to it, but I feel there is still further to travel before you can bring the very best out of it. Overall, I love the new version - downloaded!

I'm looking for a new music project and I'd like to have a stab at remixing this myself. I use 'reaper' software, and can happily work with any number of audio 'stems'. All I'd need is the vocals (preferably all untreated, as in 'dry'), the chord structure and the tempo... if you're interested and don't mind someone else fiddling about with your music PM me. You can always send me all the audio on a CD or DVD by post if it's too much to upload.

Random recording in France of some intermission classical/Spanish guitar riff I made up.

I have literally hundreds of these, and need to go through and master/develop all of them..

well done on the radio play mate, it's not entirely my thing but for some reason i sat and listened to the whole thing and found it had a nice quirky lo-fi feel to it, good job.

and ben your guitar riff is great, sounded fantastical

i put some new ones up recently too, check it

Whoops I only just noticed this. I can send them to you but they probably won't sound as good "naked", it was a pretty rushed recording. But I'll make some bounces when I get a chance.

So nearly bought a Micro Korg today. I've always wanted one but getting a proper shot in the shop nearly tipped me over the edge. My credit card bill would have been through the roof, glad I resisted.

Over the past few days me and a mate have been having a guitar battle over Facebook, uploading stuff and letting people decide who's is better. Now I've actually started enjoying putting my stuff online so I might make some more anyway, but here's my 3 pieces so far:

A(nother) song of mine focusing on chaos theory. It's pretty rough though.

https://soundcloud.com/a-battleship-called-minks/if

If the Big Bang was symmetrical
And determinism holds true
Then somewhere across the universe
There'll be another you

They'll say the things that you say
And do all the things you do
They'll share all your thoughts & feelings
Have the same ideas too

If it's not too far to travel
You can meet them at the gates
The imaginary mirror
At the midpoint in space

Where everything's reflected
And nothing makes it through
But a perfect mirror image
Stares right back at you

Then on the one side
They changed a single atom
That changed a million others
That changed a billion others

Before you know it
It starts a major diversion
That starts a chain reaction
Now there's no reflection

Vive independence
Vive independence
Vive independence
Vive independence

Well that's my theory anyway
Well that's my theory anyway
Well that's my theory anyway
Well that's my theory anyway...

Unfortunately, another bad choice of song that your voice cant really carry. Choose better songs, man..

Its nothing personal, just find something that fits your range.

You're a good pianist and I can tell you enjoy singing the song and it's someway there, but I'm not sure you're projecting. Try transposing the the song or stand and sing at distance to an imaginary audience, you'll feel ridiculous at first but it might help you believe in your voice.

I have that problem, but with my own songs. Either need a singer do it for me or I have started to write more for my range, but need a vocal coach to uncover what exactly that is, then write for the range. It doesn't help that I started at 11 and sung the most when I was in the "rock school" phase. My voice is completely different now, I can put a lot of power behind bass but with no articulation, so breathing technique is essential. That doesn't come naturally to me, or maybe I just need to accept I'm a shouty type if I want the power and need an appropriate band for it.

Cool mini project abs, I like the tune and the hq video, would love to manage to do some stuff like that in my zero spare time at the moment. I might need to start planning projects ahead and taking my holiday to do them.

I understand. Just my "thinking on" noise I guess.
