PostDo you get the most out of your games?

I am currently playing Sonic Mania Plus, i’m on the last level but have only collected 1 Chaos Emerald. Once I beat this last level I plan to move on and play something else and will probably not play SMP again (I have enjoyed it tho)

Reading some comments online, people are playing through multiple times collecting all the emeralds, playing encore mode etc... to try and see every ending and get everything out of the game.

This got me thinking, am I moving on from games too quickly? Am I not getting the most out of the games I play? I’ll start a game but after a few plays i’m thinking about what I want to play next. This then leads me to start rushing through what I am currently playing so I could easily miss out on stuff!

How about you GR, do you feel you get the most out of everything you play or are you like me and move on as soon as you see the credits roll?

I generally only play through games once due to time constraints, so I try and do everything in my first play through. Case in point, Breath of the Wild. I did all the shrines, all the side-quests etc. All tremendously enjoyable but I knew going in that it's unlikely that I'd be able to come back to it once done.

Price also plays a part for me. Zelda cost me almost 40 snoops so I was always going to try and squeeze every last morsel I could from it to justify the price. Thankfully it exceeded all expectations and it was money well spent.

Basically, if you're happy that you've got your money's worth and you're satisfied with the experience and time you've had with the game, I wouldn't worry about it.

Variety is the spice of life. You do you. Don't do something for the sake of it.

Usually no but I do enjoy fully completing a game. If it's fun and if fully completing it seems feasible without having to scour a guide then I'll do it.

I think the game I most pushed for a 100% completion (at least I'm sure I got 100%) was Custom Robo DS. I combed every area for every obscure little thing. I really got invested in the world and the characters, and the game was about robot battles where you can customise the robots so what's not to like. That said, it was a very long time ago now and I remember almost nothing about the story.

I very rarely fully complete any games these days purely down to the smaller amount of time I actually have to sit down and properly sink a few hours into a game, I make sure I at least see the end credits in nearly all of the games I buy though or it does feel like a bit of a waste of money in my opinion. However there has been the odd game where it as failed to grab my attention so I've still got some games like that in my back catalogue but I doubt I'll actually get around to finishing them. If it's from a series I've enjoyed in the past I do make more of an effort to see the credits, recent example being Xenoblade Chronicles 2, loved XC and XCX (eventually) but XC2 is failing to keep me playing, I keep meaning to drop it down to the easy setting to see if that improves my experience with the game, I'm not sure what's keeping me from it really.

There is the a few series where I feel I do fully get value for money though and consistently as well. These are mainly Zelda, Pokémon and Animal Crossing. Whether this be because I do numerous runs of the game (Zelda and Pokémon) or just sink hundreds of hours into it (Animal Crossing) I do always feel like I've got great value out of all the games I've played from these series.

I will always try to 100% a game where possible. Even if a new game comes along, sometimes I'll wait till I finish the current one, or if not, I put it on the back burner with the intention of returning some day. If you haven't totally finished a game Idk why you'd ever restrict yourself by saying "I'm never coming back to this game". Then again, if you no longer enjoy it then I guess you wouldn't want to return anyway.

Yeah, just do what you enjoy. If you feel you're missing out, go back and replay it. If not, move on. I think it's a shame to miss out on the chaos emeralds though since they're pretty integral.

Yes, I try to.

When I get a game I work out how far I want to go in it. Ideally 100%, but only if I know I will enjoy doing it-eg I set my own standard in BOTW because no way was I getting all 900 korok seeds.

I try to stick to that and manage my new game purchases against what I’ve got on the go. One or two fall by the wayside (I still need to play through Skyrim properly) but for the most part I stay on top of it.

Depends how much I enjoy the game and how feasible doing absolutely everything is. I'll usually try to get as much as I can out of a game, but if going for 100% starts to become a slog I'll move on. I have found that I'm much less of a completionist nowadays than I used to be, partly down to lack of time, partly down to a bigger backlog and partly down to just how much bigger games are nowadays.

I do think some games have lost their lustre in terms of endgame content though. Case in point being Pokemon Sun/Moon, I used to spend aaaaaages filling out the Pokedex, getting all the legendaries etc. but with Moon I just kind of stopped after the Elite Four.

I agree with this but it's a fine balance, if you just do that thing everyone does when they try emulation and try loads of games for 5 minutes you will miss out on a lot of good content.

There is something about gaming that seems to make us feel like we need to complete everything or we've wasted our money. If you're really not enjoying something then give it up but if you just move onto whatever the next new release is out of some sort of compulsion or addiction you might be selling yourself short.

As you all know, I rarely complete games. In recent years, the only "big" games I have completed are Fallout 3 and Mad Max. I find most games to be pretty difficult but it'd probably help if I didn't flit between them so much.

I get value out of Pro Evo Soccer though. With the current 2018 edition I've played around 350 Online Divisions matches; each takes around twenty minutes to complete and so that's approximately 116 hours of play.

Well I touched on this just now in my Backlog topic, but I don't think you necessarily need to complete a game to get something worthwhile out of it.

The problem is though, like I said there, that I think most gamers must have about 50-60% of their backlog lying unplayed. It's fine having a game uncompleted, but you played as much as you wanted. It's fine if you see the credits but haven't got the hidden ending, or all the secrets, or all the trophies/achievements.

Cost is a bit of an issue too. I night Dragon Age Inquisition GOTY for £4. Do you let the cost dictate how much you've gotten out of a game? As DA took me 140 hours. Had I stopped after 30, you could say I easily "got my money's worth" but I had barely scratched the surface of the game. I don't think I had even reached Skyhold by that point, which is when the game starts to kick into gear. I had enjoyed my time up until that point of course, but had I abandoned it, it would have been a bit unfulfilled in terms of what it could offer me.

And like I said in the backlog topic, it's all well and good abandoning a title if you don't like it or don't want to play it anymore. But I reckon most of our games we put down simply because something new and shiny comes along.

If it's a game I thoroughly enjoy and find replayable, then I may try to get the most out of it, but most games I'm happy just to finish once.

Sonic mania is a good example of one I'll keep coming back to and replaying due to the short nature of it, but with games being such time sinks these days I'll just try to exhaust as much of the content on my one and only playthrough and then move on.

True, I mean more with regards to post credits game stuff. But also don't perseverance with a game for the sake of it actually. It's alright not to like something everyone else fawns over.

I never used to but as I'm now limited by my physical disabilitiy as to what I can play, I tend to eke out every last bit of enjoyment from games.

I recently started replaying Everybody's Golf 2 (via emulation) for the fourth time and have been trying to achieve 100% completion - something which I wouldn't have done when I was capable of playing almost anything and even though I know the game like the back of my hand I'm enjoying it more than I did before.

I definitely don't 100% games or play them through multiple times - i recently finished asscreed origins and had no intention of doing every enemy camp or finding every collectible, i'd rather move onto a new story than grind away for no purpose other than trophies/achievements.

For racing games its a bit different - some aren't fundamentally good enough to warrant shaving off times in time trial modes etc while games like Forza and GT are sandboxes where you can make your own fun - in Forza Horizon 3 i enjoyed taking the old cars from the 60s and making them into offroad rally beasts - channelling my inner mad max, same with doing livery designs because I enjoy the process.
