My weekend working and I'm bored, so time for another one of my 'exciting' threads. :datass:

So gaming genres. Is there one or more you engage with than any other?

There are few genres that I don't play, (and I do regularly jump from one game to next), but racing and 3rd person action/adventure seem to make up the brunt of my game playing. A week doesn't go by when I'm not blasting around a track on the likes of PCars and GT, or scaling the dizzying heights found in Assassin's Creed and having uncomfortable conversations with the locals on the likes of The Witcher 3.

FPS and RPG games also garner a lot of my attention, but yes racing and 3rd person action/adventure get the most attention.

Over to you lovely people. :capnscotty:

Dunno about favourite but I do love me some fast arcade sports action; 2 of my all time greatest games fall into that category: NHLPA 93 and ISS '98. I'm also a fan of arcade racing, especially something set in the future or something which offers weaponry. Though I can't recall the last such game I played. The same goes for arcade sports games.

Kind of. I'd say it's (3D) Action Adventure but it's a pretty nebulous genre that can include so many games.

Like I'd class Resident Evil 4 as an action adventure even though it's more commonly called a survival horror or shooter or whatever. I'd say it's all those things. Games are just more likely to be classed as action adventure if your primary attacks are melee ones and not guns I guess.

The genre also commonly has platforming, RPG and puzzler elements. It might have features similar to fighting games, eg. games like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta - though those games will generally be referred to as just 'Action' games as opposed to Action-Adventure because of the mission-based structure and the focus on, well, action.

That said, my favourite game is a fighting game despite my general lack of engagement in them, and Tetris takes spot number 2.

I lean toward 3rd person action/adventures too, but open-worlds definitely soak up the vast majority of my time. The odd RPG does worm it's way in there - nothing like Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy, rather more action-oriented games with RPG elements like Deus Ex, but none as deep as The Witcher 3.

Racing games and platformers tend to be few and far between, so maybe I should venture into those more often going forward.

I guess I'm including many open-world games in the 3rd person action/adventure genre. I mean, that's basically what they are just on a grander scale.

Probably 3rd person action adventures for me, particularly those that have a great story. Not a fan of games with puzzles in because they often feel like work.

Yes?

You might also say that certain open-worlds offer a decent racing fix to some degree, especially GTA. But that can also work both ways, technically, in the case of some of the Need for Speed titles, Burnout Paradise, The Crew etc.

Although I haven't played one for a while now, turn-based strategy and turn-based tactics games remain my favourite.

First person shooter types were historically the go-to favorite of mine, but these days it's third person shooters / adventures that grab me more.

That's pretty much all I play theses days, along with ARPGs like Diablo and the odd casual puzzle game.

In the 90s it was 3D fighting games
- Virtual Fighter
- Tekken
- Soul Calibur

On the 00s it was FPS
- Halo
- Half Life 2
- Bioshock

Now it's third person action adventure games

I like and play a number of different gaming genres but I think my favourites are sport (PES), action adventure (Mad Max), action RPG (Fallout 3), MMO (ESO, Final Fantasy XIV) and platforming (2D and 3D). Oh, and arcade racers.

My favourite game would be "open world action role playing" like Fallout, TES, Witcher, etc.

If I had to pick one and no other, then I'd say racing games. I also enjoy exploration based adventure games (I enjoy the discovery part of dark souls as much as the combat). I used to love puzzles games and play things like puzzle fighter constantly but not so much now.

The very nebulous third person action adventure, or the genre hopping third person adventure platformer. Consider that Jak II and 3 are two of my favourite games, and they have platforming, brawling, shooting, racing, dogfighting, twin-stick shooting, on-rails shooting, skateboarding, gta open worlding, rhythm-action, whack-a-mole, pac-man...

Definitely racing of all kind from hardcore no-fun simulators to super arcadey drift-a-thons. Beyond that I also like the nebulous open world 3rd person action adventure genre - AssCreed, The Witcher, Watch Dogs 2, Horizon Zero Dawn etc. - and also just plain weird stuff like Deadly Premonition, The Norwood Suite and Oxenfree.

JRPGs are probably my favourite. Unfortunately they're also one of the most time-consuming, and as someone who doesn't get all that much time to play, that's a bit annoying. :slol:
I genuinely get through 1 or 2 JRPGs a year, I reckon.

I like first person adventures like Bioshock, portal and dishonored,3rd person adventures like dead space and tomato raider and 2d side scrolling games like limbo and shadow complex. Don't mind the occasional game of footie or decent golf game.

Rapidly-greying is Mediocre to Average at games :fp:

Is Football Manager a genre? If so then that's my favourite :slol:
