I must be one of the ten percent then. I don't really talk as my shopping is being put through, but if I'm spoken to I'll quite happily respond.

You must've worked somewhere rough then, it's not at all like that in most places.

I was in Costa Coffee at lunchtime on Saturday, and there was a trainee (with a trainee t-shirt) serving this really chavvy family. They'd given him an order of about 5-6 drinks and a cup of hot water for a baby bottle, and he'd forgotten one of the drinks and the water. Not amazing service, but he's still learning, and making coffee in those machines isn't exactly stirring Kenco into a mug. I have no problem with them telling him he's got something wrong, I did that with my order straight after (she wasn't a trainee, she was just gooseberry fool), but the way this mother talked to him was strawberry floating horrible, spelling it out to him like he was retarded, and when he got her the cup of water kicking off at him because it was too small for her bottle, like he knows all about baby paraphrenalia being a young man working in a coffee shop. Then she turns round to my girlfriend and I, and does that eye rolling "One can't get the service these days, can one?!" look. strawberry floating bitch.

Oh Dowbocop! You just reminded me!

I was in McDonald's with a friend a couple of weeks back, we were sat eating and chatting, there was a family sat next to us, two parents, three kids aged about 5-9. They'd finished their food and the kids started putting all their wrappers and stuff in the happy meal boxes and taking them to the bin, just as you'd expect well mannered kids to do, but the mum goes and says:

"Oh, don't put your rubbish and stuff in the bin, otherwise these people won't have any work to do and they'll get bored, they're paid to pick up our rubbish."

She then took one of the kids happy meal boxes and tipped it upside down spilling the wrappers and a sauce pot onto the table!!!!

I wanted to headbutt her! What the strawberry float is she teaching her kids! Unbelievable.

I wouldn't mind if she just left the stuff on the table, loads of people do that, but to actively discourage your kids from putting their rubbish in the bin? I despair.

You should've said something, Shadders. There's no way I'd let the whore get away with that.

Or just jizz in her burger next time she came in.

I once worked in McDonald's and the only two good things about it were the fortnightly pay and the free lunches. The customers were largely and unnecessarily rude, with some of them taking the position that they were superior to me. It doesn't cross their mind that there are hard-working and successful students who take these jobs in school holidays before going on to A-Levels, degrees and diplomas in professions like journalism :x

That is disgraceful, Shadow . I always get people telling me not to put my rubbish away at McDonald's and I just question what the harm is in me helping out by clearing up my own mess. I don't understand why people feel that it's okay to leave rubbish just because there are people working there who will ultimately take the blame if the place is messy.

Not all leaving-your-rubbish at the table is bad. We all love the commuters who leave their newspapers on the train seats. Free reading for their successors!

But saying that 'these people won't have any work to do' and then tipping it out onto the table is strawberry floating disgraceful.

I agree. Why is it left up to the public to decide how much work those gits should do?

The general public just don't give a gooseberry fool about anyone else but themselves. And they convince themselves that their lives are too important to waste a second helping anyone else.

For example, the other month in town, there was a man having an asthma attack in the middle of the street. Absolutely no one helped him and people were making sure not to get too close in case he actually managed to ask for help. I strawberry floating hate people. My girlfriend, upon seeing the guy in obvious distress, went right over to try and help and stayed to make sure he was okay, phoned someone for him, til he was feeling better. This and the fact that I work now and get to observe all kinds of different people, has made me realise just how lucky I am to have found someone so genuinely caring who will always try to help others.

Anyway, I'll stop going off on one now. People just make me so mad!

I hold no contempt for anyone simply because they work in the service industry, it's one of those jobs where you're under pressure to keep the customers happy, but are simultaneously expected to be the vessel through which your employers would bleed them dry given the opportunity. That being said, there's this one guy who works in the Burger King in town who really irritates me. He seems to be in there all the time, he might be a slightly superior member of staff there too, but whenever I try and order just a burger and a drink, he insists on pushing the fact that I could make it a meal and get chips for just 15p extra or whatever it is. Granted, I expect that all the staff will ask, they've been told to, but this guy will never let it go, even when I've told him that I won't eat the chips, he turns round and keeps going on about how it's only a few pence more. Like I'd usually just give away my spare change because someone told me to. :?

Not at all, I work in the Hotel Industry and earlier in my career worked in the Food and Beverage side in Bar, Restaurant and Room Service. People think its an easy job but the amount of gooseberry fool you have to put up with from the public is unbelievable.

Its an industry in which you work a ridiculous amount of hours, doing physically demanding work and working odd-hours for a gooseberry fool wage only to have some jumped up member of the public comes up to you and starts giving you abuse over the fact that they've been waiting a couple of minutes to be served.

Since moving into a management area in another position in the hotel I now get approached differently by the public because I'm all suited up yet I still have to deal with the after effects of them being arseholes with my staff. Frankly there's no need for it and the people who treat them like something they've stepped in are a strawberry floating disgrace.

That'll be why one of your pizzas was late the other day, KK.

I'm always as nice as I can be to anyone working any job because I know what it's like to have crappy customers. At the moment I work at Subway and one woman threw 2 sandwiches back and me and told me to shove them up my arse because I had to make a cash drop as the till wouldn't let me in, and she was getting impatient. She had a go at me and said "How long is this going to be?", scowling with her flabby face, and all I did was tell her that it'll take a moment as the till wouldn't let me in. As she was walking out the till opened

In response to Shadow, I can't believe a parent would do such a thing! I've noticed some people saying to their kids before that they should leave their rubbish for the cleaners, but never have I heard of anyone emptying the rubbish back out!

People who leave their tables in a complete mess really piss me off. It's annoying when people leave things on the table, but if it's quite neat, I don't mind as much as it only takes a moment. However, the people who leave things sprawled everywhere, dirty napkins all over the place, and half-sandwiches on the floor are disgusting. You wouldn't do it in a restaurant, so why do it in a fast food place? People really have no respect for other people these days. If I'm out and about, I'll always clean up after myself. Hell, I cleared a table at McDonals the other week that no one else would sit at because it had stuff left on it, and last year sometime, I cleared half of the upstairs in another Subway because I didn't want to eat in the middle of a shitty mess. I don't expect others to do that, but cleaning up after yourself isn't hard, and people's attitudes to shifting a tiny bit of rubbish in order to sit down annoy me. Hardly back-breaking work.

Went on a bit of a rant there, but ah well!

A mate of mine once had a go at me for taking our empty glasses back to the bar as he thought it would piss off the staff as I was doing their job for them. There I was thinking I was just being courteous.

That is NOT on. No way would I have left without at least saying something. Probably a comment about her kids having picked up their manners elsewhere, as she clearly has none.

I don't imagine it being an easy job, working in a fast food restaurant, so I have plenty of respect for the people who do it to make some cash.
