You shake the bottle, don't you shake the bottle before using it anyway?

They do restock but they hide the fresh stuff at the back - same with garages that sell sandwiches, the fresh ones get put at the back.

That's why when I buy my bread, I always buy from the back of the shelf.

Yes they do. It's called stock rotation.

Well, I'm on to them - as with all dairies and perishables, I always select from the back of the shelf, being sure to compare expiries just in case they get lazy/ pull a fast one...

I do it because I don't have a bread bin and I think I might as well because it does last longer.

And trust me, I'm not one of these zero-immune system, Calpol-glugging pussies. I eat rotten strawberries by cutting them up and I eat meat that was cooked 5 days prior. 90% of my shopping is reduced quality food from Waitrose that will last up to a week or even more after the "use by" date. Honestly I can't imagine what people would do these days without a refrigerator. It's all bollocks. Just strawberry floating boil the crap out of it if you're worried about bacteria, which we're meant to be mostly immune to anyway. I don't eat bread much because of the wheat (I'm allergic), so it lasts for ages, and eventually goes off. So I keep it longer by refrigerating it.

It makes it taste weird though. I have to let it warm up or toast it.

I can't stand the sight of people throwing away great food just because the number printed on it says so. If it's not rotten, mouldy, gone a weird colour, liquidised or smell bad, there is nothing wrong with it. And if you still think there is, melt the cheese, boil the fish, toast the bread, microwave the sausage.

Fantastic way for supermarkets to get you to shop twice as often as you need to, isn't it?

And no, you don't need to refrigerate ketchup for gooseberry fool, since its almost entirely sugar and vinegar, which is self preseving as bacteria don't eat sugar. Mold does, but you simply remove it.

mic wrote:Only Shallow, that quote is bollocks - bread stays fresher for longer in the fridge. Otherwise, the second and third loaf go mouldy before the first is finished. I also have a breadbin, so the loaf in use goes in there while one unopened loaf goes in the fridge. I usually have yet another loaf or two in the freezer. I like to think of it as the Bread Cycle.

Now find me something that says the best place to store bread is in the fridge. ;)

Bladdy wierdos.

Bread in the Fridge?

My loaf last a whole week in the bread bin and barely goes stale if properly wrapped up. It could last longer but I eat it all (*nom nom nom*)

The fridge dries out bread? That would explain the strange taste. It does remind me of stale things.

Might stop doing that then, or at least not for long periods of time.

The answer too all food wastage is soup. You just can't get ill from something you've boiled all day.

I have eggs that have a use by date of the 12th on. They're still good. I had one with my dinner yesterday.

Yeah, eggs I find last at least 4 days after the date printed (which is a "best before" date anyway).

You just do that floating test thing. Even if they half float, you can still boil them. Probably not such a good idea to fry and make runny eggs if they're like that though, they gotta mostly sink.

That strawberry example was a good one. My neigbouring house had a whole box of massive, bright red lovely Waitrose strawberries just sitting there 'cause they had caught a little bit of sugar mold (which is not a toxic fungus). Just cut it off and ate the whole box. Bonus. Meanwhile a girl friend winced - rubbish!

I swear I'm far more resilient to colds, flu, bugs etc. just general illness because I deliberately eat more bacteria, good and a bit of bad. Builds up your natural defences - everyone knows this; it's GCSE biology.

Kudos to my mother. Respect your mother.

Bread = Fridge (or it goes mouldy in a couple of days)
Ketchup = Fridge (plus any sauce thing once opened, as I keep them for months before finishing)
Eggs = Fridge (space for them, don't think they have use by dates for eggs in NZ)
Spuds = Pantry (even though they get eyes still, must try the apple thing)

For those that say they don't keep bread in the fridge in the supermarket, why do it at home. You could say the same for all vegetables and most soft drinks

I just shook a ketchup bottle which had been left out of the fridge (the missus just doesn't get it, man), and still got the manky water. I also got it on monday with a bottle of American mustard which was in the fridge.

Anyway, I don't keep bread in the fridge, as I need the space for other things.
