Went for the Diamondback Ampt 2018 in the end with a 20.75 top tube and alloy cassette hub.

I prefer the finish as it looks more old school than the Mongoose

I'm more of an Angel summoner.

What kind of BMX were the ones the rich kids had in the 90s where you could spin the handle bars round and round without the brake cable getting messed up?

It's called a Gyro stem. Lots of different brands had them, but they're generally not a standard fitting on cheaper bikes. Some people like having a Gyro, others (like my work colleague) ditch brakes altogether.

As long as you have the back brake on the opposite side of which way you tail whip etc then a Gyro isn't necessary. However, a linear brake cable is preferable to a coiled one as they don't rip the housing open if you wind the cable up too many times.

My new Diamondback Ampt.

Had a quick go and no surprise I'm very much out of practice. In time, and once I'm used to the bike and feeling confident again, I'll take off the front brake and put the right lever where the front one was so I can do tail whips, although that is a little way off yet. Popped a few bunny hops, couple of manuals, and almost came a cropper trying a fakie, (not used to a cassette hub, must remember to pedal back faster than I'm moving!). I'll be honest the biggest hurdle right now is fear, which is obviously an age thing. Helmet on order! lol.

Yeah it feels great, mixed with "You're 45 next week ya plonker! “

It's a lovely bike though, really nice to ride. Great weight and balance. Wife and kids are out strawberry picking tomorrow so I'm taking the opportunity to go for a nice long ride, get a real feel for it.

Nothing too crazy though, my mother made me promise to get my helmet first!

When I protested that I'm an adult she replied "Yes, but you're still a dickhead!" :capnscotty:

I remember the handle bar thing. Wow, that takes me back.

Yeah, will lower the seat.

I'll check the vids. Cheers.

Don't worry about age, dude - just do what you want to do! As long as it's legal etc :-). I don't have the money or space at the mo, but I'd like to have a retro BMX too. Probably a Raleigh Burner.

Nah, I don't really worry about age. Much like I don't care people know I play video games and love anime.

I'd also love a classic Burner. The long term plan is to clear out the garage (something I've been meaning to do for an age) and turn it into my bike workshop, not just for my bikes but the kids as well. I've already my eye on a We The People bmx and have been looking into Raleigh Burners on ebay and the like. For that I need space, so will be hiring a mini skip and finally clearing out said garage.

Hmm, maybe this is why I'm really trying to keep my marriage from falling apart (see relationship thread). It affords me a garage. :shifty:

Just watched one of Sam's vids. Brilliant. Like that he sounds like a farmer, and when he's not doing BMX/MB he's worrying about his lawn. 8-)

Thanks for that, bud. :toot:

Sustained my first injury while trying to bunny hop higher. Bike shot out from under me and I didn't plant my feet in time. Ouch.

Bailed a couple of times again today trying to pull off a 180-to-fakie from a manual. Hurt my wrist and shoulder on the second time as I crashed to the ground, the bike deciding to whip from under me half way through said 180. Again, ouch.

As much as I'm enjoying blasting around on my BMX again I'm definitely getting too old for this gooseberry fool.

Can't afford a 3 month sicky due to broken bones so I'm going to reel it in a tad and not try anything too complex. Did go out for lovely bike ride with my girls last Saturday, though. Had to stop at the sweet shop of course!

Updated the frame on my BMX as there is a crack in the headtube on my old frane, new frame is a Haro race lite pro.

As the nice weather is upon us once more it's time to drag my BMX out again. Aside from the odd hop and low 180 I'm just burning around, certainly after injuring my ribs last year. Sadly I'm to old to do myself injury that puts me out of work and, I'll be honest, age has instilled the fear.

25 years ago I could bail on a vert, brush it off and get back on my bike without a care. Now? The fear talks too much. :(
