I guess I am in favour of cards when it is something personal for the recipient, but against them when it is for a non-personal event. I have no problem sending a wedding card to a couple but like strawberry float am I buying Easter cards.

At this point you could even come at it from an environmental view that making that many card each year has to be having an impact but personally I just dislike them.

I wouldn’t think there was much environmental impact from cards, most paper is recycled.

Nope, I can say happy birthday and give them a present what purpose does a card do that hasn't already been covered in that.

I give my Mum a Christmas card because she will get upset if I don't. I don't mind at all - if it makes her happy then hey, whatever - but apart from that I personally don't really think it's worthwhile.

Cards for weddings and funerals are more meaningful. If it's something that happens every year it's just an obligation, but at a big life event you may have some actual thoughts & well-wishes that you want to convey and a card is a good format for that.

The messages written inside can give them sentimental value. My girlfriend is studying animation and always draws something inside birthday/christmas cards, which is really neat. It's basically a present itself

I agree that personally-illustrated cards are nice, but for me this is the exception that proves the rule, because the actual gift & meaning to it is the drawing which could equally well be delivered in non-card-form.

I don't care for them personally, but I do send a few. Some to close family, others to friends who send them to me. It's really just so that people don't get 'offended' when I don't return the favour after they've sent me one. I've told some not to bother sending, but they protest that it "wouldn't be right". If it makes them happy, fine. It's no hardship for me to send one in return.

My mum still hangs all the Christmas cards she gets (and even ones from previous years) on this big...thing... that she hangs off the kitchen door, with all the cards slotted into it. Tradition I guess, quite nice really. Pointless, but nice.

To actually answer the question yeah I do. But only to a few people and I tend to get ones made by artists (Brighton Christmas Open Houses are good for this) rather then a pack of mass produced scenes. Also been known to make them if I have a decent idea for the right person.

How far back does a "tradition" have to go? The first Christmas card wasn't even sent until the 1840s and it was quite a while after that before it became popular amongst the plebs.

I guess it is all the fault of the war on Christmas. I expect you'll get arrested soon for a "Christmas" card rather than a "Holiday" card.

For me personally, a life long tradition. Yes, Christmas probably is next as there are "Happy Holidays!" cards around so not to offend those who do not like Christmas, but are happy to participate in the trappings (such as public holidays). A pet hate of mine is seeing cards that say "Happy Christmas" or "Merry Xmas". It is "Merry Christmas" bitches.
