Are you actually having a back and forth with yourself?

For work stuff there can be some back and forth, usually I'm talking through the ways to do something to come up with the best solution. Without it i would end up writing the first version then rewriting over and over as I come up with better ways but by talking myself through it I hit a better version earlier.

I do that all the time in my head. Never out loud but I imagine doing it out loud is probably more beneficial if you're preparing for something that'll really take place.

I don't talk to myself, but I whistle or click, and I'll sing along to music, so I'm guessing that's not too far off. I've definitely spent days in the past without saying a word.

Would definitely give someone a weird look if I caught them chatting away on their lonesome though

"Huh, who does he think he is giving me a weird look?"

"Nothing wrong with talking to myself."

"I'll show him. I'll show them all!"

It's called verbal reasoning, and it's very common if your brain is better at processing things aurally as well as verbally, than visually or purely verbally (as in the internal voice) or some kind of arithmetical function (I don't think it's right to just call that "cognitive" because that generally refers to all intelligent thought as well) . We use spoken words as objects, variables, parameters, operands etc, in order to process logic but it can also help with exploring emotions, although that's more to do with complex metaphor, tone of voice, inflection, singing etc. I think, things that are beyond words. Repeating phrases such as instructions can also help to commit them to memory, because some people are better at storing auditory data than other formats of data in their brain.

It's this kind of understanding that really highlights how people think and work completely differently and work methodologies and various systems normalised in society can be incredibly disruptive depending on how you happen to think, and I think it's the last hurdle in discrimination we'll face, hopefully.

I've lived alone for 9 years. I talk to myself all the time.

I don't think so, or if I do occasionally, it's not enough to take note of. I am, however, subject to outbursts of making weird noises and faces if I'm alone... getting amped up like Hulk Hogan while waiting for the kettle to boil, stuff like that, you know.

That works perfectly if you read it in Russell Brand's voice

Talking to yourself is fine. If you read anything in Russel Brand's voice - you should seek professional help.

Does emailing yourself, from one email account to a different one, to remind yourself to do something (or that you’ve actually done something) count?

My other half was complaining that he could no longer access You Tube through our TV. I fixed that yesterday, forgot to tell him of my skill, and have just emailed myself to remind me to tell him tonight. I mean, just how mad is that? :)

My neighbour caught me talking to a moomin once. It was a cuddly toy that had been delivered. I was talking to it and then holding it's face to my ear as if it was whispering to me. She walked past without a word and we've never ever discussed it since. :P

I have internal conversations with people all the time.

Sometimes it slips out of my mouth when I’m not looking. If I was a neutral observer to this, I’d be calling the authorities.

Plus points for Moomin. Moomins are (very) cool.
