Do you talk to yourself?

So I was taking a toilet break at work today and, thinking I was alone, having a bit of a mumble to myself whilst going about my business. After finishing up and washing my hands, stopping to have a quick word with the man in the mirror of course, someone stepped out of one of the other cubicles and proceeded to give me some interesting looks whilst I washed up and left.

Now obviously there was a degree of embarrassment on my part, but by the look this guy gave me you would have thought he'd just caught me pleasuring myself or something! :lol:

Is it really that odd to have a quick natter to yourself in those odd moments of alone time we get every now and then? I'm not talking proper psycho stuff obviously - I'm not snickering to myself about my personal plans for world domination or anything, just random utterances and voiced internal nonsense etc? :shifty:

I talk to myself an awful lot. Do it all the time in work. I do work nights and many hours so that's my excuse, but no I think it's normal.

Something weird I do, is I talk about myself as if I'm another person. Eg, say I did something nice for someone. Later on I'll remember it and go 'oh he was really nice for doing that.'As If I'm another person, talking to a third person about me who's not there.

I think that may be weird.

I talk to myself loads. Usually as if I have an audience. So sometimes I'll find myself repeating thoughts I've had in an explanatory manner, as if for someone else's benefit.

I don't think talking to yourself is all that weird, from speaking to people it seems to be more commonplace than people let on. But it certainly seems to be looked down upon by other people if they catch you doing it and I think the manner with which you do it differs from person to person. Most common seems to be just vocalising the odd thought or expression when doing something.

Yep, talk to myself a lot, especially when I'm working. I find it helps me think to verbally bounce my ideas off myself rather than purely thinking about them.

Yep it's the only way to get through the day.

All the time, especially when I am doing some for of coding or scripting tend to mutter to myself sort of discussing the problem working through it.

Can't say I do, no.

Only time I'll say something outload is if I drop something on the floor, and that's only to swear immediately afterwards.

My Dad never used to talk to himself, but then did the more he became an alcoholic. The same to someone else I knew when he started taking more and more drugs. A woman I used to know used to talk to herself a lot, but then she also suffered from paranoia and anxiety. In these particular instances it came across to me as a gradual deterioration of the mind.

All the time, mostly just vocalising random thoughts or commenting on things I'm doing, for example if I'm playing a strategy game I often find myself thinking out loud things like "hmmm, there's oil there but do I really want to put a city there?".

Response so far seems pretty much in line with what I would have thought.

Having just driven home I realised that's one place where I do this a lot. If I'm in the car on my own I will invariably talk to myself a fair bit - if I'm properly bored in fact I think I end up having conversations with myself most of the way home! :shifty:

Indeed!

Often this is in response to people on the radio - lampooning someone on a talk radio show etc. But often I'll just bash out a broad Scots or Irish accent for the sheer joy of it! :lol:

See this is why I have anime figures on my desk. I can just talk to them! I mean imagine how weird it would look talking to yourself when you could be talking to a scantily clad plastic girl. :slol:

Yes, all the time. I rehearse imaginary conversations, most of which I will never have, I also re-enact events (not as healthy) with alternative outcomes or things I ought to have said, books and essays I am probably in the process of writing, reminders of the day to day, to clarify thoughts and a lot more, and it's largely down to my neurology. Usually it's a way to test scenarios before playing them out, and it's a good way to determine that risk is quite low (especially when there is none).

Fun fact: we inherit this normal human habit as well as music from birds. Expecting humans to be silent is the equivalent of expecting birds to never sing.

I do all of this, though I keep it in my head rather than speaking out loud. (Apart from if I suddenly remember/simulate something embarrassing, then sometimes I'll reflexively say "oh no" before I can stop myself. :lol:

At the most i'll say, "oh what the strawberry float are you doing?!" if I do something really stupid, but actually talking to yourself... you lot are very strange :dread:

I don't really do it, except occasionally getting annoyed at a video game or something and muttering curses at it. I think it's pretty normal though and I wouldn't think it was weird if I overheard someone.
