Yeah but Nintendo do this with a huge stable of IPs that have been carefully cultivated over the last 35 odds years. They can make cheaper titles that have their big names attached to them and still make lots of money. It's not really a position you can just easily move into.

Oh I agree, but diversifying a bit is probably the best way forward, also they need to be less greedy, they need to work to make a return for sure but not aim for a massive return over all else.

"We need to make less money than before" is not an easy sell to shareholders unfortunately. For things to change, the big publishers need to make less money on these practices so they can no longer financially justify them.

The largest publishers need to relearn that they can make money on smaller projects that can take more risks and be different than the usual fps or driving output.
£10 million for the entire project including advertising doesn't need to shift 2 million copies.

Games like Vermintide most likely cost pretty much bugger all but it was a fun multiplayer game and most likely made a decent profit as they are making a sequel.

I don’t think there will ever be a videogame crash. People seem to have been predicting one for 20 years now and it is no closer to coming. Gaming is just too diverse now for the whole thing to fall apart and too many people of all ages enjoy gaming for people to ever stop.

I think some publishers/developers/platforms will crash though. Hopefully that will be the EA types, but sadly it’ll probably be the smaller guys that struggle to make any money from developing interesting games.

I am very sceptical about gaming's bright future; publishers have more patience and money to outlast any outrage or reaction to anti-consumer practices like lootboxes etc.

An old RPS article about how the industry uses silence to make problems go away is quite important to consider - controversial changes and inroads into making more money are normalised through a slow yet massive process of narrative change; making them accepted as inherent or necessary. This only gets easier with time as new generations lacking context see lootboxes, microtransactions and other things as just the way things are.

So i don't think gaming will collapse due to reasons stated here including the presence of indies etc, but it will certainly diminish in my interests and expectations. It is no coincidence that i re-bought a ps2 and xbox 360 in the second half of this year to revist or see games i missed the first time around from a better time.

Utter nonsense. There was much more shovel ware and licensed garbage in those generations than there this now.

I didn't play the shovelware or licensed garbage then and i don't play it now. I would take these:

Over battlefront 2, shadow of war and nfs payback any day because even the big grindy rpgs at least gave the impression of respecting the player's time without also making sideways glances and knowing looks at their wallets for more.

I would also argue that among said shovelware through lower entry costs were some genuine diamonds in the rough: the b-tier games which had problems but also tried new things or at least seemed to have some heart to them.

Presence of shovelware =/= less incredible games.

It’s hard to judge something that is current. I am sure there were plenty of people during the PS2/360 era that thought “modern” games were crap and they preferred older games.

The real judgement on current games will be in 10 years time, will we look back fondly on the classics of today (the gooseberry fool ones will be forgotten) or will the games of 2027 be so good that nobody would seriously want to go backwards?

I think nostalgia will always be there, even with the lootbox ridden games of 2017. “Son you don’t know how great things used to be, I once bought Battlefield 2 and spent twenty times the price of the game on lootboxes! The excitement of wondering if I would get a decent rifle was so much better than the photo realistic full sensory impact VR experiences that you have now!”

What about lots of the other really, really good games that have been released that aren't they three titles you have mentioned.

The irony is that the modern sequels to most of the games in that picture are better in every way.

Trelliz quoted that era as being a "better time". In my opinion there was far more full price rubbish released then than there is now.

I think there was more shovelware around back then, but the cost of doing a half assed job is more expensive now and it's better to just pump crap out on mobile to target the casual market.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

This has been an incredible year for landmark games. I think history will look fondly on 2017 in gaming. Yeah the loot box stuff is bad but DON'T BUY THEM. Much like ten years ago we all didn't buy horse armour. Greedy men in suits are always going to manipulate people into giving their money for little in return
