It’s a real shame that you don’t feel that you can wear a poppy because of your experiences and abusive cases that you have read about, Moggy. I am genuinely surprised that you have faced so much vitriol about wearing and not wearing a poppy. In my neck of the woods (south London) I have found these instances (both for and against) to be fairly rare - albeit one case is still too many - and people appear to be pretty free to make a choice either way. I am not suggesting that things aren’t different elsewhere, of course. I’d hate to think that extremists - at either end - could stop people from doing what they wanted to do.

But if you wear a poppy you wouldn't experience it as no one is ever going to come up to you to tell you to take it off.

Having said that I've never had any bother for not wearing one.

In my previous job yes, but in the current job we're not allowed to wear a Poppy due to infection control.

If folk don't wish to wear a poppy then fair enough. Doesn't mean they're being disrespectful.

If you want to wear a poppy - go for it, I don’t care.

I don't usually wear one because I very rarely have cash on me but I do feel I should mainly because I've had a lot of friends and family who have served.

I've never seen or heard of anyone abused for not wearing one.

However I think the symbol has been highjacked and continues to be by racist banana splits that see it as meaning "I luv my cuntry!" Patriotism isn't inheriantly bad but it is used to justify a lot of gooseberry fool by these pricks and they see wearing a poppy and patriotism as one and the same.

A relatively small proportion of stupid people do indeed try to hijack the poppy appeal and twist it to project their own racist beliefs. But it’s just that... relatively small. Why let them impact your own thoughts and actions? The majority of folk aren’t wearing a poppy to promote war or glorify government decisions to enter war.

You sure Jawa? have you seen the amount of people that hang on the every word of Tommy Robinson, Hopkins, farage etc?

Fabian Delph is a banana split.

Relatively, that is a small group.

I wear one, but if people choose not to, then that's absolutely fine.

This is, in a nutshell, how I feel.

Very sad to read all the bile thrown at Moeen Ali. You can clearly see he was wearing a poppy when the team landed in Australia so he clearly doesn't object to it like the SPORT OUR TROOPS brigade would like everyone to believe.

Yeah but he’s got a foreign name, is he even English? Not like our brave Dele Alli, he’s cut from the same golden cloth of John Trey

It’s that time of year again and rather than let the Facebook thread be overrun with it we can moan about Poppy fascists in here.

It absolutely, undeniably has been politicised, whether people want to accept it or not.

And no, I won't be wearing one.
