Game is a little over £9 with PS+. £11-ish without.

Spoilers within but you get a good idea of the excellent action RPG gameplay on offer.

The game has multiple playable characters; simple but slick and satisfying combat with lots of options; upgradable skills, abilities and buffs; multiple difficulty settings, and amazing music.

Oh and boss fights. Killer boss fights.

Easy Allies were bigging this up recently. What's the deal with the Ys games - are they all connected, or can you jump in anywhere?

Not sure, tbh.

Origin is a prequel set 7000 years (!) before Ys 1. Jump in. Enjoy.

If you have a Vita then you can get Ys Chronicles (1 and 2), Ys: The Oath in Felghana (Ys 3), Memories of Celceta (Ys 4) and Ys Seven. Celceta is a Vita game, also available on PS3, the others are PSP era games. (Vita compatible, obviously.)

Not listening to another of OPs recommendations after I got burnt on Dangerous Golf.

I will never forgive you for that SoK.

Nice one OP, I adore this series  And Origin is certainly up there as one of the best. Glad you highlighted Genesis Beyond the Beginning too, amazing track.

Absolutely, though it has memorable characters/locales/scenarios the series isn't massively story driven. Plus each game does a fine job of getting you up to speed. Just don't get ambitious with difficulty :P Normal is the absolute highest I'd recommend on first time run throughs.

I'd recommend either Origin or Oath in Felghana for a first time player. Hopefully the latter gets ported to console sometime, it is on PSP but only at 30fps.

I stopped playing that a while ago but I got more than a good few weeks of enjoyment out of it. Apologies if you are, but are you using the slow time ability? It wasn't well explained (if at all) upon launch but that, along manipulating swerve and height on ball, does make things more enjoyable. (Otherwise you've almost zero control over what happens and everything is over super quick.) The worst thing I could say about it was that it was a bit glitchy here and there, that and the camera was a bit naff given the tight dimensions of some of the stages.

See, Jazzem recommends it too! Listen to him! (Unless he too steered you "wrong" in the past.)

Any idea how Oath performs on PC? I may get it on that after I'm done with Origin.

Like a dream  System requirements are next to nothing for today's standards, same for other Falcom games on that engine (Trails in the Sky also)

Plus they work nicely with Cheat Engine, which I use to speed the games up+down on the fly for grinding/backtracking.

I've recently started Ys 1, so I'll get around to this at some point.

Don't think so. (Don't recall seeing any cross save options on save screen.)

It really isn't; you may not love it as much as I do  but it's a quality action rpg. Everything runs super smooth, too. (No juddering, tearing, etc.)

How does it run on Vita? Seems like the type of game I'd rather play on that.

I've read it's 30fps on Vita, 60fps (w/occasional drops) on PS4.
