Yeah it was advertised pretty heavily on normal TV.
It's been in the thread title for ages.

:P

For a long time I've had a deep hatred for Jawa because of this very reason. The 11th Hour is chuffing brilliant.
Jenuall wrote:I don't think Smith was trying to mimic Tennant

Oh I think he was and it was very clever to do so. Smith approached it as if he was behaving like the Doctor. How the Doctor had been and as if he still was because thats what you would do. The problem is people like to compare and do verses and treat them like separate entities but thats not what an actor would do. When the Doctor stands there and says "I dont want to go" its the same person as the one that smacks his head on a tree moments later. Smith behaves like the Doctor did, not Tennant. Thats really the genius of Smith as the Doctor. How he somehow made this young face look like it had lived all those lives. When he sits with Amelia in the Big Bang.

It's best summed up by the new teeth moment. The Doctor goes to do something he is utterly familiar with. Just speaking. But there is a whole new mouth and voice that comes out and it feels strange to him.
OrangeRKN wrote:Toothy predator wasn't up to much either and could have just killed everyone multiple times. Worse than Predator 2, not sure about the new film.

I just never really thought he was either interesting or much of a threat. Feel like the whole thing would have been better if he had been hunting one of the main cast (like Grace) and then it would have helped get over the coincidence of them just so happening to be on the train with the victim as it could have been that she was chosen because of being related to Ryan (tooth predator likes his DNA).

He killed one guy for trying to imprison him and another for tossing his salad on him. Maybe we are the bad guys?

Exactly, straight out of the blocks it was clear that Smith was trying to be the Doctor, not try and be a Doctor, and specifically not try and copy Tennant's Doctor. And I agree he nailed the old man/young face element superbly. Oh and that bit in Big Bang is fantastic* - "We're all stories in the end"

It's the poor security guard he did in that I feel most sorry for.

The move to Sunday night seems odd to me too, I don't think BBC particularly advertised that well. I tuned in on Saturday and was pretty pissed off to see Strictly had the entire evening slot. Had to put some David Tennant Who on for the nipper instead!

The result?

The most watched Who debut of the new era.

Well its probably a case of me not paying attention because I don't tend to watch normal TV these days as I'm all about streaming!

Let's see how the figures hold though as I remember Matt Smith's figures falling away because the plots were so convoluted.

I can be added to the overnight figures as I have this recorded for the little one, I've only seen the one clip on the train and she sounds a bit like Brian Clough so I hope she sticks with that!

I gave up looking at viewing figures a long time ago but I think it's hard to make judgements over how popular various New Who eras have been because of the way in which they report the data has not be changing quickly enough to match the way in which people watch TV.

I think there was certainly a gap in the data where iPlayer views weren't being considered for several series for example.

The intital figures are always the same. iPlayer results don't get added until later.

Yep, although I thought he was just on the phone to her rather than facetiming - fair play to the old guy if I'm wrong though, way to keep up with the tech grandad!

I actually thought that part was a bit much, I guess they were trying to show how brutal the alien warrior was (he doesn't give a gooseberry fool, he'll even kill dear old duffers with grand kids like this bloke!) but as the alien didn't know that he was on the phone to his grand daughter and nobody else saw this death or knew about the old man it neither proved the viciousness of the alien or provided a mechanism to up the stakes and "make it personal" for the Doctor or her companions. It was just nasty for the audience.

Was ok. In some ways reminded me of the Paul McGann Dr Who.

Its always hard to tell in first episodes of the series, the more interesting part of the episodes is taken up by introducing the new Dr and companions.

To be fair, they did show the train breaking down.

It broke down, the driver died, most of the people on board had to evacuate and run across the tracks to safety, those left on board had bombs implanted in their bodies and one of them became a target for an extra-terrestrial hitman.

I don't know how bad the average train in Sheffield is but it would have to be strawberry floating horrific for the above to be described as "working"!
