As I said last night I'm a bit jelly. Same as the 12 set and probably 18. I'd like to get them but I already own most of them on DVD and really there is only so much you can do to them to make them "HD". Weirdly I think that season mirrors the latest in many ways. Overcrowded crew, a more new more passive Doctor (he too young! Instead of he too woman!), change of broadcast day leading to improved ratings (19 was a hit!) But despite some issues these set of stories, for the most part, are really good. And 5's more gentle demeanor is backed up as a sensitive thoughtful English gentleman. Davisons take actually really helps let the companions grow. He reacts to them whereas most of the other just go on a "I'm the Doctor" ego trip. One thing though, assuming you watch these with your lad, watch with the original effects first.

More then welcome. :toot:
OrangeReindeer wrote:This is a good break down in general but he completely seems to have missed the thing that made the episode interesting? With the planet affecting the character's minds to make them angrier, more violent and less rational, as well as forgetful. That's why Graham became set on killing tooth predator, and that's why the Doctor started handing out grenades and strapping bombs to things.

I don't think he forgot really. More a case that the ep did to. He asked if the planet affected Tim Shaw and the alien couple. Also at no point did I feel like it was the planet doing those things. Graham isn't struggling with something forcing him to act against how he feels. He is very clear and calm in his intentions, seems like he has thought about it for a long time. Its a decision he has made not a sudden emotional crisis brought on by the planet. Heck it felt more like a promise he had made himself a long time ago. As for the Doctor and the bombs its really nothing beyond the Doctor as far as I'm concerned. If the intent of the story was to use the planet to make these things happen then I strongly feel it failed utterly in executing this. I'd also argue it takes away the potential impact any of it would have had if it was "the planet that did it."

I agree that the idea of planet effecting peoples minds is a really interesting one (that might have been done before :shifty: ) but it was wasted.

On a side note I thought Mark Addy was really good in a role that ended up being another waste. Also why were they sent on a mission to get back the crushed planet and not, you know, blow up the super weapon! Christ what a mess it was. :fp:

Sorry I'm only so annoyed because I love the show.

It was 100% definitely the influence of the planet that was affecting both Graham and the Doctor, I thought that was made obvious. It was stated to be an effect of the planet, we saw it in the captain at the start before he was given a neural inhibitor (as well as his memory loss), it was shown to still be affecting them all despite the inhibitors by having Ryan complain feeling travel sick when they set off, and the Doctor was directly challenged for her out-of-character behaviour with the grenades/bombs. Graham only becomes fixated on killing Tim Shaw once they have already set off and the planetary effects have already started.

Honestly I can't see the episode any differently, and that was the most interesting aspect of the episode so it was key to my viewing.

Haven't kept up with this series but I went back and watched the first episode somewhat recently

It was much better than I was expecting, the change in direction is honestly refreshing and exactly what the series needed. It feels a lot less low budget-dumbass british sci fi now and that does it wonders. Despite my initial reservations, the new Doctor is also pretty sick tho I'd be lying if I said I didnt miss Capaldi.

Oh well sorry about that. They basically added something to the trailer and thats everywhere now (tv and social media ads) and was being reported on loads of sites. Why they decided to do this I don't really know.

I hadn't seen any ads  TV is rarely watched by me and I rarely go anywhere other than here/Twitch/youtube on the internet.

Just finished the whole season. Stopped watching it weekly after Rosa because I always prefer to just blitz through a season of Who in a weekend in case there's a few twaddle episodes. I think I can get on with Jodie as the Doctor a lot more than I could get on with grumpy old man Capaldi, but I don't know if that's just because of the writing or what. Jodie  Graham

Can't believe they're not doing another season until 2020, though :x Are we going to get a Tennant-style year of seasonal specials or is it just NOTHING after the New Year episode until they feel like it?

Madness. "New Doctor, reasonably popular series, let's not bother doing anything to keep this going" Classic BBC.
