It was an alright episode, but for a season finale it's easily the weakest as it was rather boring for a season finale.
The New Years episode does look good mind.

I liked it, tooth predator was way better than in the debut

The planet and it's mind control was the real villain though

His point on Yaz & Graham shocked me because I realised I was the same. I have absolutely no opinion on their relationship.... because they don't seem to have one. strawberry floating shocking. :fp: At least when Tegan/Nyssa/Adric crowded the scene they didnt like/liked each other. Yaz and Graham is like a vacuum of nothing.

But a couple of my own extra thoughts- Did you not think that it was stupid for Graham to be the one that wants revenge? Does it not make more sense from everything we've seen this year for it to be Ryan that gets angry? He often talks about how Grace helped him stop getting angry. Then there is the fact Tim Shaw didnt even actually kill Grace. Her death is basically an accident and sure I can see someone might resent Tim Shaw over but..... I go back to what I said about ep one all over again....
The Watching Artist wrote: Feel like the whole thing would have been better if he had been hunting one of the main cast (like Grace)
Imagine if he had actually killed Grace and tell me it wouldn't have fueled for a better piece of drama in both ends of the series? Such a simple change that even someone as thick as me can see it. :fp:

Also really like this observation-

There is something so horribly charmless and cold about them in the TARDIS. It's like everyone forgets they can actually act in it. Maybe its just because the set is so crap to work in.

This is a good break down in general but he completely seems to have missed the thing that made the episode interesting? With the planet affecting the character's minds to make them angrier, more violent and less rational, as well as forgetful.

That's why Graham became set on killing tooth predator, and that's why the Doctor started handing out grenades and strapping bombs to things.

That was like the main thing I liked about the episode. It was this creeping and insidious influence, I was just disappointed they didn't go further with it once they removed the neural inhibitors.

That Yaz/Graham thing is a great "armor penetrating" question. I shall steal it.

It didn't feel like a finale to me at all, more like a delayed second part of a standard two-parter. It easily ranks as the least memorable finale of modern Who. Tim Tooth-face Shaw is a pretty rubbish main villain for the series, and that's been a problem with the monsters in general IMO - if you're going to avoid all the classic monsters, at least make sure you've got something that makes doing that worthwhile.

Ryan and Yaz are like nothing characters, worst companions in a while. Graham is the only companion I really liked, he had the best lines and frankly I think Bradley Walsh ended up being the best actor of the three as well which I never would've expected going into this series.

It's weird because I thought this series was supposed to be more character-driven what with the lack of a proper series story arc, but outside of Graham there's been hardly any memorable character stuff, and I feel like after an entire series I barely know Yaz for instance. I didn't have this problem in previous series, and they had series story arcs too.

The Doctor has been quite...bland compared to previous Doctors. I didn't really feel any truly strong emotions from her, it was all quite samey from episode to episode. Compare her to the 9th Doctor and the mark he made with his one series for instance. Before this series started the cast were talking about how she could be quite scary at times - as scary as a mildly cross primary school teacher maybe? I like having a female Doctor and I like Jodie but they need to give her better scripts with more to do. Some of the things this Doctor did seemed badly thought out by the writers too.

Chibnall as showrunner has been very disappointing for me. I preferred every episode he didn't write or only co-wrote vs his solo episodes. I found myself losing interest during most of his episodes which was an alarming first for me with modern Doctor Who, and some of the episodes had pretty unsatisfactory endings. He's thoroughly mediocre TBH. His largely simpler stories felt drawn out at times and the show has lost some charm, seemingly replaced with more exposition.

I hope they take the extra time between now and the next series to work on the various issues people are raising, and the show comes back stronger with better stories, memorable monsters and more interesting characters.

Love the intro though!

I thought the inhibitor thing was meant to stop the effects of the planet? They only seemed to get affected when Yaz and 13 took them off.

They evidently didn't work perfectly, as demonstrated as soon as they left by Ryan feeling travel sick. The captain even said that's how it starts.

Both Graham and the Doctor were acting very obviously out of character.

Just watched the season finale. It was okay... I found my attention wandering during the first half but things picked up in the latter stages.

"Okay" describes my opinion of the series as a whole, too. I like the crew, the locations and effects were often good and a few of the episodes were fun but I didn't find much to be very memorable. In particular, the "baddies" often didn't stand out at all. It wasn't bad, just... okay.

I still believe that there is great potential in the cast and I hope that the storylines in the next series step up in quality.

That’s how I’ve found the series on the whole as well, just ok. Certainly not bad and good in parts but nothing amazing.

Jodie hasn’t been bad as the Doctor, but for me the real standout has been Bradley Walsh, he’s been great all season and can really pack some emotion into his lines.

Doctor Who claims to be the fastest-growing scripted series in all of television this year in the US, with gains in Nielsen live/same day viewership over the previous season in total viewers and both the 18-49 and 25-54 demos. The long-running series claims it’s up 47% in total viewers, 46% in adults 18-49, and 32% in adults 25-54.

Growth came from women 18-34, whose audience doubled from last season, ranking Doctor Who among the top-15 cable dramas this year in this hard-to-reach demo. In Nielsen live+7 ratings, Doctor Who is averaging 1.6 million viewers per episode (through eight episodes), up 20% percent from the 12th Doctor’s final season (1.3 million) and ahead of the first seasons of the 9th, 10th, and 11th Doctors. Doctor Who also ranks among the year’s top five drama series on social media.

i liked this series a lot. while i was never truly captured like i was as a child i loved the change of pace it was such a breath of fresh air. i think the series will shift up a gear if it does continue with the same show runner and doctor. this series was very much focused on something completely new and building it all up. they had a pretty big focus before hand on all their new guest writers and directors and i liked the sort of lack of comic book nature to it all. the doctor doesnt have to feel like a super hero.

would i like another series of this though? hmm. im not sure. i think it should certainly get a bit more exciting. but unlike the moffat era i never found myself getting angry about the series.

as a fan im sad it wont be back until 2020.

as my job im so gooseberry fool happy its not back until 2020 theres only so many angry white men i can deal with.

Everybody’s dumping on Tim Shaw but I thought he was the best part of the episode. He wasn’t subtle but he was sinister.

Worst was when the neural inhibitors were removed and... gave the Doctor a headache for a bit? I don’t know.

I didn’t see him as sinister, to me he just came across as a b movie bad guy, the sort that monologues “NOW I WILL TELL YOU MY PLAN BWAHAHAHA!”

In the first episode he could have been sinister, the reveal of all the teeth stuck to his face could have turned into a really creepy villain, but instead it went down the hammy over the top route.

There were two good villains this series - the time traveler from Rosa, and the assassin's from Demons of the Punjab

The time traveler wasn't used enough to become badly done and I really liked the explanation for him being unable to kill as well as his efforts only being to nudge time in a different direction, and the assassin's in Demons of the Punjab were genuinely well done with the psychic speech and teleportation

The worst villains by far (and that's saying something) were the flying pieces of cloth
