I'm so far behind on this! Will put some serious catch up time in over the next few days as I'm itching for my Time Lord fix now!

I did manage to finish off the Time Meddler a few days back - really enjoyable little story I thought. One thing I found odd about the ending though: Why did the Doctor leave a note for the Meddling Monk in English? Shouldn't he have written it in Gallefreyan or something?

Some things about The Mind Robber-
As you may well have gathered the 60's Doctor Who production team were often forced to get creative to deal with various issues. The Mind Robber was no different. Behind the scenes this was a tricky time. With various scripts not working for many reasons. The story before The Mind Robber, The Dominators, had to be cut down by an episode when it was decided it didn't have enough to satisfy 6 episodes. This forced the producers to decide to add an additional episode to The Mind Robber. So at the last minute the entire opening episode was devised and bolted on. Then, in what is probably the most creative bit of problem solving in the shows history, when actor Frazer Hines contracted chicken pox he was replaced by Hamish Wilson for a brief period during the story. The card cutout game was invented to explain his new face!

Wendy Padbury said she really wished they had time for another take of her fight with the Karkus. Later on in her career she would become the agent of a young actor called Matt Smith. Padders also gives great hugs and is lovely. and datass.

The Master in this story should not be confused with the yet to be invented renegade Time Lord.

The combo of the 2nd Doctor, Zoe and Jamie are possibly my fav TARDIS crew in the series.

The actor Bernard Horsfall plays Gulliver. He would go on to appear a number of times in Doctor Who as various characters. So keep an eye out. We might see him again. :P

Watched the Time Meddler. Loved the Doctor's school lesson at the beginning. "Oh yes, so I'm in Northumberland and the Vikings are invading and King Harold is coming so it must be 1066!" :datass:
Very much enjoyed the story, is thisthe first introduction of another timelord/traveller?
Also where did whatshisface come from at the beginning was he just a tramp sleeping in the TARDIS?
The Doctor being furiously gangster at the end with his punishment for the monk. Although I'm not entirely sure what he broke on his TARDIS, and that shot of the monk presumably looking in at the end was a steaming pile of horse white, why not just have him standing in the TARDIS?

By the time the end of season 6 had arrived the Second Doctor had seen off many a foe. From the Daleks and the Cybermen, to the deadly DEADLY Quarks and the Martian invaders the Ice Warriors. This period would even introduce the Great Intelligence, the entity behind some of the events of series 7 of New Who. But as mentioned above, behind the scenes Doctor Who was struggling, it was described as an exhausting production by the leads and in season 6 a number of scripts were dropped late on for a number of reasons. A big gap appeared and 2 writers had to fill that hole. How they did that would shape the show forever.

Story 7-
The War Games

The TARDIS lands in no mans land during WWI. However our intrepid heroes discover that all is not as it seems......

Originally Broadcast- 19 April to 21 June 1969
Written by- Terrance Dicks and Malcolm Hulke

The Watching Artist wrote:Couple of points about The Time Meddler before I release the next story.....
This was the first full story to blend history with sci-fi outside of the TARDIS and crew arriving. Up until this point any story set in the past had been purely historical.
12 secs of footage is missing from the final episode.
The Meddling Monk is indeed the first member of the Doctors race we meet other then Susan. This is also the first time we ever see another TARDIS.
"A space helmet for a cow" is the best line in anything ever. This is a fact.

Regarding the end. He strawberry floated up the dimensions. So the inside was tiny!

He appeared in the previous story as such they had already met. He was a pilot of a ship that crashed on the planet they were on where he was imprisoned for 2 years. gooseberry fool happened and he found the TARDIS. Also he is played by Peter Purves and would go on to be a Blue Peter presenter for about 10 years.

Episode 4: IT'S A CARTOON!

So the rocket didn't launch as they managed to sabotage it. These Cybermen are different to the more recent ones, aren't interested in deleting or converting, just want a chat in their weird dial-up voice.
Mondas went out a bit weakly and turns out the cybermen weren't fans of radiation. Presume their ships ran on petrol.
Thought the Doctor was on his way out what with him being all weak and feeble, but the cartoon element threw me that it might not be his regeneration. I'm sure the original of that survives.
Looking forward to seeing Troughton's Doctor now!
:toot:

Great episode, even though bits of it were a bit muddled :)

 Hopefully you remember the end of the current series when the Doctor describes the Billdasian Cybermen as not up for a fight. These ones are survivors. Not some uber army. They want to absorb the power of the Earth to maintain Mondas, but its doomed.

 or whatever power source they had wasnt radiation or was shielded.

You are correct. But its the only section from the ep that does as it was broadcast on Blue Peter years later.

So I might have got a little carried away and decided to watch an extra serial before starting War Games.

I bought The Invasion :toot: It was excellent and I would recommend others to watch it. It's 8 episodes and was only 5.99. Was great to get to watch some more of the second Doctor.

I finished War Games last night. I really enjoyed it from start to finish. At ten episodes it was long but apart from a few dodgy accents it and maybe a couple of story elements that repeated it was excellent. You all need to catch up so we can have some proper chat.

Please don't skip serials, particularly The Mind Robber that was brilliant and really creative.

I'm going to watch The Daleks next.

I'm looking forward to the next serial being released tomorrow. Will be interesting to see where we go from here.

Some stuff about the War Games

Well the was epic!
This features our first look at the Sonic Screwdriver, working as an actual screwdriver. However this was not the first appearance of the device, this happened in Fury From the Deep in season 5.
That was indeed our first visit to the Doctors home world our first look at proper Time Lords. When the Doctor decides to contact them he uses a special box, a Hypercube-

These turn up again in The Doctors Wife-
Image
In episode 6 the part of Private Moor was played by David Troughton, son of the leading man! He had already appeared in the show and would go on to feature again including in Series 4 ep Midnight.
The space/time machines that the War Chief provides the aliens are called SIDRAT. The novelisation explains this stand for Space and Inter-time Directional Robot All-purpose Transporter.
The scene during the Doctors trial featured a few returning monsters from the Doctors adventures. This included the Ice Warriors who had featured in two 2nd Doctor stories, The Ice Warriors and The Seeds of Death.
This was the first time one of the main cast left at the end of a season and it was the first time there would be a significant gap between stories. Up until this point the show had been broadcast on a near weekly basis. The forthcoming reduction in episode numbers meant that these gaps would become the norm. For months the last shot of Doctor Who was that terrifying moment of the Doctor falling into nothingness at the will of the Time Lords.

that final ep  :o :datass:

:( :x

This weeks story will happen when Google Drive works properly.

Tomb of the Cybermen - Wasn't that fussed with the first episode but the rest was very good. This Doctor seems very unsure at times but also arrive when needed.
Once againthe Cybermen didn't seem particularly threatening

Oh and aaarrgghh, slowly moving cyber-slugs!!!
