A wee delay but I've just watched "Thin Ice". I enjoyed the setting of the frozen Thames and the costumes - including those deep see diver outfits! - were very good. The story was a fun romp and I think Bill is proving to be a fine assistant. Overall... [7].

I haven't seen any of this series, so I've decided to catch up ready for the finale. I watched the first five episodes this weekend. A few thoughts:

The Pilot - Great opening episode, with a convincing nemesis.
Smile - I found the emoji theme annoying as hell, but robots erroneously defining the way to happiness was a good plotline.
Thin Ice - Average. A bit "token historical one". And I can't take Nathan Barley seriously as a villain.
Knock Knock - Was OK. Wooden face looked crap. Nothing else to say.
Oxygen - So many of its ideas have been used before, it felt like watching a repeat.

Loves us all since 2008

I actually think this has been the best Capaldi series.

Oooooo

It's part of the Gallifrey spin off which already has 8 series. I've not actually listened to any of those.

Finished Worldwide Web just now. I always get lost in that one. I just find it difficult to focus on for some reason. :fp: Annoying as I like the first part.

Me too. I actually think this has been my favourite series since Matt Smith's debut in S5, which I can't believe was now 7 years ago!

To the Death

What a bloodbath
Alex's death has been sign posted for while, Lucie's since last episode.

Poor Alex barely got a follow up (other than Susan's reacton) as Dr focused on Lucie.

Bit "neat" ending of the Dalek's a;l being sucked up, and then no comments on how utterly strawberry floated up earth is...

Season 4 was pretty strong overall - good use of arc/recurring characters. Might as well have been called "break the woobie"

Next up Dark Eyes!...Or maybe Spare Parts.

Good! I never gave it to you you dirty little thief.

Death in Blackpool?

I really liked that as mentioned above. Intimate. Only 2-3 people in danger. Plus the "Lucie gets angry, angry is emotion, emotion is life" lesson is heavy handedly spelt out. Pat just watches it occur

Just going back to this. Its very much an update and reimagining of the original Eight Legs story. Planet of the Spiders. There they use a Buddhist center for self help to create the bridge to Earth. At least McGann can say Metebelis properly. Another to add to your list.

This is what I meant about this McGann run being right between classic and new. It uses many more returning elements to make new stories then the tv series. The Eight Legs are actually part of the inspiration for the Time Beetle in Turn Left.

Just watched Series 10, Episode 4 - "Knock Knock". What started out as a pretty corny "teenagers in a haunted house" story turned into something quite touching, sad and odd by the end. I enjoyed it!

Good good. I preferred Thin Ice on the whole. Will you catch up by the weekend?

I love most of 6 and think 7 is rather overlooked tbh. Capaldi's first was really hit and miss, not helped by the last ep being proper crap. Think on the whole people are rather harsh on last series as well. Been seeing people say that World Enough and Time was the best ep in years. But then we have Heaven Sent just one series ago. Listen a year before that.

I can't remember episodes much, but I would say while there has been some standout moments in the.past 2 series they haven't been as consistent as this imo.

Is there like a series and episode order to the big finish stuff?

No series has been crap - I'm a big fan of the Smith era and generally prefer his run to that of Tennant, but found series 6 and 7 to both be quite patchy and inconsistent. As you say with the likes of Listen and Heaven Sent there are always great episodes (must admit to not being as big a fan of HS as some myself - but I will concede that it is an ambitious episode).

I think for me the key with this series is it that each episode has been consistently good or better, the characteriation of the companions and their use within episodes has been far more effective than that of Clara for the past few series (I have a real soft spot for Bill and Nardole now), and there have been far fewer attempts to over-complicate or produce episodes where the writers are being too clever for their own good.

I'm watching the series on disc and the set has episodes 1 through 6. I'll have to wait for the second set to arrive at end July before I can watch he remaining episodes! I'll probably keep clear of this thread to avoid reading any spoilers!

But you'll miss out on the chat where Bill gets eaten by a giant fly!
