This is very cool! They blend in really well. I didn't notice most of them until the comparison at the end.

Yeah Defenders has cut in to my watch time for this a bit too!

Episodes 1 and 2 of The Time Meddler done, not sure what to make of Vicki or Steven yet. They seem to mainly fulfill the same roles as Susan and Ian - someone who trusts and looks up to the Doctor and someone who doesn't believe anything he says.

Who is Steven by the way? His introduction seems a bit rushed; "oh he's just some bloke who made his way into the TARDIS? Fair enough he can come along for the ride!" The Doctor seems to do a bit more of the Time Lord equivalent of a CRB check these days!

Episode two was notable for basically not featuring the Doctor at all, other than the same shot as used at the end of episode 1 and in a bit of off-screen dialogue. Was this typical of the show in the early days or is it that we are getting near the end of Hartnell's run so we're seeing less of him? We have the odd Doctor-lite episode these days but nothing quite like this.

All in all I'm enjoying it so far - the production seems to have improved a bit, although I guess they are aiming for a lower bar than in Invasion of Earth here. Oh and that fight scene in Episode 2 - hilarious stuff, I'm sure I remember other 60s shows (Avengers, Star Trek, Saint etc.) offering much more authentic rough and tumble than this farce!

He appeared in the previous story as such they had already met. He was a pilot of a ship that crashed on the planet they were on where he was imprisoned for 2 years. gooseberry fool happened and he found the TARDIS. Also he is played by Peter Purves and would go on to be a Blue Peter presenter for about 10 years.

Most don't to begin with.

Yes. Quite often one of the regulars wont feature in an ep. Doctor Who was basically being made all year round at this point. For example season 1 went from 23 November 1963 – 12 September 1964. As such missing an ep was effectively being given the week off as thats how long they had to rehearse and record.

They probably did that in 1 take.

The Daily Mirror are reporting that the new Doctor's first companion will be played by Bradley Walsh.

I'm being totally serious.

Hmmm. He played an antagonistic alien before in The Sarah Jane Adventures. I mean the man can act, so why not. We all thought the same when Catherine Tate was announced to be a companion.

Indeed, Tate was an abomination of a companion.

Still better than Billie Piper and Freema Agyeman though.

No, just no.

She was the weaker of the first 3 for sure, but I wouldn't say she sucked.

#sadface

I just couldn't get on with Tate and her three emotional states: Shouting, trying to be funny (whilst shouting), and pulling that weird "I'm trying to be sad but I'm not really sure what it should look like (probably because I'm busy thinking about when I'm going to get a chance to shout next) face.

Still, that is three more emotions than Billie Piper managed convincingly so it's not all bad!

Ep3 of The Time Meddler done, enjoying this story quite a lot!

You can still see how they tried to seed the educational aspects of the show in to these early series, lots of references to the battle of Hastings and the dates at which things occured etc.

Still keep thinking of the Carry On films whenever the monk is on screen though, looking at his IMDB profile the actor has done loads of stuff but the only other thing I've seen him in is Carry On!

Love the way the villain has a to do list of his evil plan - all episodes should feature this it would make things so much easier for our heroes!

Interesting that the monk seems to be a Time Lord. Have we had much of this kind of thing prior to this on the show to this point?

Also as a general comment at this point the Doctor still doesn't actually seem to have control of the TARDIS, it seeming to land wherever and whenever it wants - presumably he manages to fix this at some point?
