Maybe I'm just naive but in my lifetime so far I would say that it generally felt like we as a people were moving forwards in terms of tolerance, equality, acceptance of new and different people and experiences etc. But the last few years with big things like Brexit and Trump, and then "smaller" things like this I'm really beginning to wonder whether I was just fooling myself. Perhaps the progress I thought I was seeing was not real, or maybe all these lovely people just went shy for a decade or so before regaining their voice?
I just don't get it - on what logical grounds is there anything to complain about here? Are people that insecure that the casting of a woman in a TV show really causes them that much pain that they have to react like this?

It's bizarre that anyone could possibly hold these ludicrous views but I'm certain it's a tiny minority that really care about this. You'll always have banana splits.

I don't think it's about casting a woman in a TV show - surely you don't think it's that simplistic - it's about changing a long-standing character for the sake of ticking boxes. There are plenty of women who are disgruntled about the decision as well. It's quite funny to see people getting so worked up about it though, it's just a strawberry floating TV programme. 5 Live this morning with their inevitable debate on it was full of Disgusted from Tunbridge Wells types ranting about this and then going off on one about the design of the TARDIS or something.

Jodie is not just a talented actor but she has a bold and brilliant vision for her Doctor. She aced it in her audition both technically and with the powerful female life force she brings to the role.

Laura: "I can't stop to talk, I'm sorry, they're going absolutely beserk! Daniel put that down! They're always like this after a shift. Mandolyn, stop chasing Andrew! It's just, they're out there for 8 hours, just hanging from their toes and doing nothing, so of course, they want to let off steam. Eddy put that down! Kathryn leave him alone! Felicity will you please stop juggling! What, what did you want anyway?!"
Finnemore: "I was just going to inquire-"
Laura: "Jonathan don't you run away! Don't you dare! Ok I'm sorry, look I've really got to go and catch him, I'm so sorry!"
*noise of a motorbike*
Finnemore: "Well you're not going to catch him now he's gone on that motorbike..."
Laura: "No... No I realize that. I don't know why we gave them motorbikes... It's political correctness gone mad!"
Finnemore: "What's it got to do with political correctness?"
Laura: "Well, nothing! That's the point! That's why it's gone mad! Normally when people say political correctness gone mad, what they mean is; political correctness I don't agree with. But in this case, political correctness, has given some sloths a motorbike. I mean, it has actually gone mad."

Bullshit.
After 50 odd years and 14 actors (counting John Hurt) it was only ever just a matter of time before the Doctor became female, or black, or Asian.
The trouble with the hard right man baby snowflakes is that they see everything as "PC gone mad" or "just ticking boxes". It doesn't seem to occur to them that maybe Whittaker was the best person for the role, oh no she has a vagina, she must have only got the job because of boobs and diversity! Even if they wanted a woman for the role, maybe it's because they have story reasons to do so, not tickboxes?
A humanoid alien that regenerates and completely changes age, size, accent and personality was always going to change colour or sex at some point and diversity quotas have little to do with it.
