Didn't really like that. In fact I thought it was the weakest of the 3 specials, and is it just my telly or was the sound mix strawberry floating abysmal in this? It's like the early days of Nu Who when the sound mix was shite.

Enjoyed some of the Toymaker parts (the puppet bits were cool) but so much else I was either in different to or in all honesty thought was dreadful. With some of the resolutions being an absolute anticlimax.

The best part for me was the spice up your life scene.

The worst part was the poorly defined, badly edited and unsatisfyingly concluded game of catch.

Overall it was David Tennant and Neil Patrick Harris enjoying themselves so I had a good time.

That was fantastic

Overall I liked the episode. The first 2/3rds was very good.

I also don't have a problem with the idea of the bigeneration, but I thought it was very clumsily done. It didn't feel like it was handled like a coherent plot, more like RTD just can't say goodbye to Tennant. When he "died" originally we had a long extended "I don't want to go" load of bollocks. Now he's living a quiet family life, but also buggering off to Mars every so often. It's just weird and ultimately pointless. If they were going to do a bigeneration, then we should have had a series with two Doctors, not this "I love David and can't bring myself to kill him" rubbish.

There was a very weird line that Catherine Tate had as well. "Do you come in lots of colours?" Wtf? :fp:

And there was a huge missed opportunity with Neil Patrick Harris, when the Doctor challenged him to a game, he should have shouted "CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!" ;)

The more I've typed on this, the more I think it was far worse than I thought.

Gatwa was great though, so there's definitely a huge amount of potential for the show going forward!

I've just remembered that there is another version of the Tennant Doctor out there, the human one. RTD really loves Tennant

I really hoped that RTD being away for so long would have meant that he was sitting on some hot gooseberry fool when he came back "he's had all this time to come up with ideas - it's going to be great!"

...

The reality, so far, has been very far from that sadly. When you consider this was supposed to have been a set of specials to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the show they really failed to deliver on what you'd want from that kind of a milestone. The shows have been fine overall, but the 50th felt way more like an event that celebrated the show. This has been too much of a circle jerk for RTD and his obsession with Tennant and that's got in the way of the shows themselves sadly

Forgive my ignorance, i've never watched a full episode of Doctor Who in my life, but with NPH (not sure if that's a spoiler, just trying to be considerate) on it last night, I want to see what all the fuss is about. Am I best to start from the start of this season or can i just watch the episode on it's own?

If you've never seen any Who, then it probably won't make much sense to you. But the show rarely makes much sense anyway.

If you know the basics of the show then you can probably muddle through it ok.

The last episode sort of directly runs into this one. You probably would want to watch all these three in order if you were going to watch them at all. If you just want to watch NPH and Tennant go for it but you may not get everything.

For me, as an absolute bare minimum you should watch the earlier Tennant episodes with Catherine Tate in them (series 4) and then the Christmas specials following on from them. There's core people and stuff that just won't make sense if you haven't seen them.

Ecclestone, Tennant and Smith all had really good series on the whole and are worth watching IMHO. It's been a pretty topsy turvy decade since the 50th anniversary it's fair to say! Capaldi and Whitaker were both great but the episodes were often bad.

I'm aware you just fancy watching a bit of telly so I've tried to avoid giving you a nerdy labour of Hercules.

"I like this actor, could I just watch this episode?"

"strawberry float NO! Watch every episode from the 1960s onwards, read every book and conduct a lengthy interview with Tom Baker. Only then will you be ready!"

;)

All you really need to know is there is a time travelling alien who loves Earth. He likes hanging out with humans and travelling with them as his companion. If he's badly injured, he can regenerate into another form. He fights against evil people/creatures, NPH plays a powerful evil guy.

The majority of the latest episode doesn't need any more knowledge than that. Things like "what the strawberry float is Bonnie Langford doing there?" are not really important unless you really want to get into Doctor Who as a whole.
