Whatevs. The films obviously have much better production which helps heeps in Invasion 2050AD, especially in the climax, but I always found the characters so stiff and thin and lifeless. The heart just isn't there and it sucks the drama out of it. Cribbins is great though. I'd love a Survivors style series set during the invasion. With absolutely no Doctor in it. Cor, imagine if they started it with the plague and managed to hide the Daleks for a reveal later on. :o :datass:

I don't want to spoil things in a big way but we might well get to see inside a Dalek. But its actually already been touched on in the show......
The Watching Artist wrote:Well I hope you all enjoyed the first week of the GRCDWC! At the end of each week I'll post a link to the DVD of the previous week so you know what to buy should you want to. For this week I recommend the box set "The Beginning" as it not only contains An Unearthly Child but the two following stories.

Yeah I've only managed the first part of the invasion so far, sorry folks!

I did enjoy part 1 a lot though - it's interesting just how much more time they seemed to have to set the scene. The vast majority of part 1 was just them arriving and talking about where they were, why it was so quiet etc. I guess people want a bit more impetus and to dive straight into the guts of the story these days but I kind of miss these moments where everything has a bit more time to breathe!

Gained second place on the podium in Kart... moaned about Dragon and Hypes employing "start when everyone else is half-way through" tactics... griped about cry-babies and quitters in PES... and now my TV-watching skills are *blatantly* good. I feel like I have activated BOSS mode in the past week 8-) .

I watched the third episode and wasn't that enthralled with it. Nothing seemed to happen, bit of humans wandering about, bit of Daleks wandering about. Someone else died.

So before I release the new story a few of my thoughts and reasoning behind choosing The Dalek Invasion of Earth.... Spoilers obvs.
I had to have an early Dalek story. Come on. I HAD to. But it was a little tricky as I was tempted to choose the very first Dalek story. However its an extra ep longer and it happens at a far more methodical pace. I feared it would be too slow for you new comers. To me Invasion is the best of the early Dalek stories. It mostly cracks along. With changes of the setting happening throughout. The riverside and warehouse. Rebel hideout. Dalek ship. The sewers. Various places in occupied London. The house of the two ladies and finally the mines. There are so many more scenarios that our heroes get stuck into but it does come at a cost. Some are obviously a bit of padding. The intelligence test in the cell is probably the most obvious. Its meant to be to see if any of the prisoners are worthy of becoming a Roboman. Fine. But later on we see that the chap who doesn't have anything to do with the test becomes a Roboman. Given the state of the Robomen I'd hate to see what the real thickies of the human race would be like Robotised. At least things like the firebomb and the Slyther don't end up making no sense. But all these things keep it interesting for me.

Most of the characters along the way have something about them. A bit of history. Someone lost or missing. They add to the world. Even the incidental characters later on, the women who sell out Babs and the guy running the black market, add to the backdrop of this dystopian future. Each of the regulars get plenty to do as well as they make there separate ways across the story. The Doctor does go missing a little in the middle but this is partly down to an accident that happened during filming. William Hartnell was dropped on his back and needed time off during filming. But the rest keep things going. Of course this would prove to be the end for Susan and whilst her romance could have been written a little better I feel its shown enough over the course of the story as to not feel out of place. Being able to show you the first time someone leaves was a good enough reason to pick this over the The Daleks I think and what a final speech. Plus you get to see the group after they bonded.

For the most part the production is strong. But its a hugely ambitious script so of course some elements don't work out. The Robomen are cool but a bit too on the slow and clumsy side. I like that they seem a bit zombie like but it does stop them being very effective. The location filming is amazing and truly made an impact. Seeing them in London, suckers in the air, is an image that would no doubt have resonated with viewers less then 20 years after WW2. Some of the stuff near the end didn't quite work out so well. The Doctor has to describe whats happening to the Dalek ship and its not quite clear how Ian makes a difference. The model work here hasn't aged that well. But a fan made quite a nice CGI update that isn't horrendously out of place.

One downside is the Daleks themselves. The voice work is sometimes a miss and whilst they feature in the story a lot they are never as creepy as they are in there first appearance. Buts its clear the production are experimenting with them. This is the first time we have a leader Dalek for example.

As Ord pointed out this story was used for a film adaptation a few years later in Invasion Earth: 2150 AD. Its rather entertaining in its own way. But I do find it rather hollow in comparison. Naturally the production values are through the roof compared to the tv series. So I like to merge them together in my head. :shifty:

One other little thing. Some of you might have noticed that series 4 ends with the Daleks moving the Earth across space in The Stolen Earth. This is of course a large nod to this story. I'd rather like to see the Dalek succeed in piloting a planet around space one day. Operating as a giant space station. Maybe a kind of death planet. :shifty: and the Robomen kind of got an update in Asylum of the Daleks......

DVD for The Dalek Invasion of Earth- https://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Dal ... B00009PBAN

As I know some have not finished our 2nd story I've spoilered this weeks intro!

Oh wise and handsome leader of GRCDWC The Watching Artist wrote:Could the Daleks prove to be as popular a second time round?

Yes. Yes they could. With ratings averaging around 12 million The Dalek Invasion of Earth was a success! 60's Dalekmania had begun and our fav upturned dustbins would go on to feature in each of the first 4 seasons and appear again near the end of season 2 as they chase the TARDIS crew (now joined by Vicki) across time and space. During which we would see Ian and Barbara say goodbye to the Doctor and the TARDIS. Only the Doctor now remains from An Unearthly Child.....

Story 3-

The Time Meddler

With Susan long gone and now Ian and Barbara departed young Vicki, an orphaned survivor of a spaceship crash in the 25th century, tries to console the Doctor. But they are quickly interrupted by an intruder! In through the doors stumbles Steven Taylor, a space pilot from Earth "in the future". He has stowed away in the TARDIS after only just surviving the previous adventure. As the TARDIS lands on a beach a mysterious Monk watches on. Its time for............ Doctor Who and a Space Helmet for a Cow!

Dalek Invasion of Earth - Episode 4 - Susan screams a lot and overreacts to EVERYTHING. She also goes in the sewers for some reason. Enjoying Barbara and Ian's exploits though

They think its the safest way to get out of the city and avoid Dalek patrols.

And avoid using Billy for most of the episode.

Episode 6

Felt a bit rushed especially when there were padded out episodes earlier.
Utter bollocks how the Doctor stopped that one Dalek and then how they all overcame them  and by strawberry float that was a bit of an explosion :toot:

Oh and that speech. :datass: Didn't realise it was from here and what preceded it though.
