The Caves of Androzani stuff

Wow?

WOW

So good. :datass: Much amaze. :datass: Many masterpiece :datass:

Robert Holmes returns to write his first story in over 5 years, his previous stories included Spearhead from Space, The Time Warrior, The Ark in Space, Pyramids of Mars, The Deadly Assassin and The Talons of Weng-Chiang (plus many more). Combined with young director by the name of Graeme Harper it created a thrilling and decidedly forward thinking version of Doctor Who. Despite being made for now over 20 years Doctor Who had largely been made in the same way but Harper was keen to modernise the approach. His more cinematic direction helped create a production that still over 30 years on (almost) looks like it was made yesterday. It was deemed so successful that Peter Davison stated that had this happened earlier in his run he would have stayed on for another season.
We finally find out why The Doctor wears a stick of celery! Davison demanded that by the time he left this would be explained. The reason? Because he is allergic to certain gases in the praxis range of the spectrum. Which when present cause the celery to turn purple. He would then eat the celery......... "if nothing else I'm sure its good for my teeth."
Did you notice that as the Doctor takes control of the ship at the end of ep 3 the effect used for his vision going blurry is the same as used for the regeneration? Thats right the Doctor spent the final ep holding off his regen in order to save Peri. :o  Take that 10 and your trip down memory lane. :datass:
David Bowie was considered for the role of Sharaz Jek, instead Christopher Gable got the role and turned in an incredible performance as the deranged scientist. The scene in ep 2. :datass: "Beauty I must have....."
The story also has a phenomenal score with Jek getting a rattle snake theme. The whole soundtrack is an incredible piece of work matching the story perfectly.....

The soundtrack actually got a full release in 2013.
Of course the production wasnt without its own problems. Strikes (again!) caused 2 scenes to be dropped and the regeneration was actually an extremly tense affair having to be done very late on. With just minutes left before the studio lights would be turned off the team had to create the most important moment in the show for years....

This is the first regeneration to feature specially recorded cameos from previous companions.
The Caves of Androzani should have been the blueprint for the show going forward. But that wouldn't happen. In DWM 400 Caves was voted fans fav, the following story "The Twin Dilemma" was ranked at the very bottom. :dread:
I said Doctor Who changed forever with this story and I didn't just mean that it was time for a new Doctor..........

The Sixth Doctor

Ok club members. Time to move on a wee bit. But from here on things are going to be a bit tricky. The show was about to hit a crisis point and I'll do my best to fill in the gaps around things. Colin Baker had been cast as the new Doctor and for those who have watched the last few series featuring Peter Capaldi some of this may sound familiar.

After Davisons lovely more vulnerable and human take on the Doctor it was decided to again switch things up and with Sixie came an attempt to return the Doctor to his more alien and unpredictable origins. Brash, arrogant and often rude the life of Sixie was a troubled one. His now infamous outfit was designed as a metaphor for his new chaotic personality. A clash of colours and patterns that, in Colins own words, he was ok with because at least he didn't have to look at it. But beneath his bluster there was a lover of beauty and a fighter for justice. He was as likely to shoot a Dalek in the face as he was to recite poetry. In order to justify such a sudden change the Doctor would undergo a crisis and so would the show itself.....

The Doctors new erratic regeneration sees him clash with Peri and in one psychotic episode he even becomes deluded and strangles her.

Unfortunately the whole thing is, quite frankly, a misjudged mess. With Sixies opening story often placed last in polls such an important character defining moment (for both) should have been handled with care but the Doctors "illness" is so poorly handled it baffles that it made it to broadcast. But....... BUT! That doesn't mean it was all shite........

Story 26-

Vengeance on Varos

The Sixth Doctor and Peri become stranded on the brutal and violent planet Varos with the TARDIS in need of repair. We are not the only ones watching for our entertainment......

Originally Broadcast- 19 - 26 January 1985

P.S. They had changed the format of the show for season 22 so whilst this is 2 eps both are 45mins.
P.P.S. If you get through this without staring at certain things you are a better man then me. Or Hexx.

I kind of like the 6th Doctor being erratic and his regeneration being a bit a miss.... I am happy with the trying to strangile a companion thing but I would have made him a bit more imbalanced and had him cry after and such.

The thing for me is with both doctor 6 and 7 they very much start one way and then head in another direction but in both cases they didnt really get long enough to do so fully.

Sorry about the delay. Dont worry too much as we are starting to near the end of this epic journey that no one is actually on anymore.

Need to fill in some gaps here for you as this weeks story carries on a thread started way back at the end of Genesis of the Daleks....

So at the end of Genesis the Daleks turn on Davros and kill him. Only obviously they dont. His back up life support kicks in and he sits there in the ruins of Kaled dome waiting......
Eventually the Daleks feel the need to return to Skaro in need of his help. This is covered in the story Destiny of the Daleks. Its....... a bit shite.

A widescreen fan edit is actually up on youtube at the mo- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3y9yG7JbO_s So feel free to give it a watch. Its actually the story before City of Death btw. At the end of it Davros is imprisoned and to be taken to trial for his crimes. Buuuuuuut the Daleks free him in Resurrection of the Daleks (1984) needing his help again. This is a much better story (actually in the mood to watch it now) and introduces the conflict between Davros and the Supreme Dalek.

It introduces Terry Molloy as Davros who is a marked improvement over the Destiny version. :dread: He makes the role his own for the rest of the classic run whilst also reappearing in various Big Finish audio stories. In Resurrection Davros attempts to take control of the Daleks and usurp the Supreme Dalek but is unable to. However Davros is nothing if not resourceful......

Story 27-

Revelation of the Daleks

The Doctor and Peri have arrived on Necros, the planet of the famed Tranquil Repose facility, here the recently deceased bodies of the wealthy are cryogenically frozen. The Doctor is here to pay his last respects to an old friend but Tranquil Repose hides a dark secret. The Great Healer is at work....

Wow  . This seems pretty cool... 235-odd hours of Who available on demand for free?

It sounds great! But I wonder why the BBC is showing this via Twitch rather than their iPlayer? Does Twitch normally do things like this?

Its not on demand. There is a schedule.
https://www.doctorwho.tv/watch/twitch/#UK

They will show a few hours 3 times a day. Well a day in the US. Here its 7pm. Then about midnight and then in the morning the next day.

Trying to investigate if its possible to set up an individual chat so people here can watch and chat. Maybe I can rehost and people can chat on the my channel. I dunno.

Personally, I hardly ever watch TV live - I record it and watch it when it suits me. I probably wouldn't be that keen on this approach.

Ok. So I've put the schedule here (I'll put it in the OP when I have time) and I'm going to highlight ones I think are really worth tuning in for (BLUE) and ones that have already been part of the Club.(RED) I'll try and do some little posts nearer the event to perhaps try explain why and whats happening and how they might link with others. Its worth noting that this is NOT all of classic Who and actually some quite notable stories are missing. Some of which are part of the DWGRCWC! :toot: In fact the current one isn't on the Twitch schedule! 8-)

Please excuse the mess.... Note I may edit the selections once I've given it more thought.

Maybe but I think it would be easier to keep it all on Twitch. One less thing for people to have open. It is an option.

I suspect the main feed will have loads and loads of people chatting to the point where its almost pointless. So I'd like to create a kind of safe haven for you lot to actually be able to interact if you want to. So you can laugh and ask questions and take the piss out of Pedz gaming skills even when he isn't playing any games. :toot:

B-B-B-B-B-B-B-BONUS TIME

Sup thread readers! So some of you may know I sometimes appear in Pedz super awesome podcast/film chatting thingy. For this weeks we did the 1965 big screen adaptation of the first Dalek story starring Peter Cushing. All you need to do is track down a copy of the film and hit play at the right moment and you've got Pedz, Jazzem, Earfolds and myself for company. For reference, Pedz and Earfolds have some experience with Doctor Who but neither have seen this and poor pooooooor Jazzem has no idea whats going on.

And yeah. We plan on doing the follow up. :toot:

Also I think I've got my twitch account sorted for the Doctor Who binging of a lifetime. It should host the TwitchPresents channel and thus allow you to chat as a group. I'll try and be about for as much as I can so just say hi- https://www.twitch.tv/mattking85
