This.
I got a bit distracted in the middle of this second one. People seem to have enjoyed this one more but I was pretty eh about it. It was just fine. Maybe it was a better episode than the first one - I guess I just like the episodes that set up a new Doctor.
As said, the EMP thing was a bit of an ass pull. Not something that's new to Doctor Who but it doesn't need to be that way. It could have been set up better.
There was a lack of tension or much conflict. That guy was a bit difficult not wanting to help or be helped but it didn't really matter. Those two were rather chummy with each other given the stakes. What might have been more interesting is if the Doctor and companions stayed split up until later in the episode, leading to a more dramatic confrontation and giving more space for individual characters to stand out more.
Also, Ilin getting intimidated into accepting the joint-winner thing even though he has the power to just strand them all there, and the Doctor getting all dramatic about the Tardis not being there even though she mentioned earlier that it was phasing in and out erratically. Obviously it just comes back.
