Been rooting through my old retro stuff and got around to testing two old systems I've owned for donkeys but never actually used: My Pc Engine and an old Famiclone. Managed to get both working, but the famiclone is an especially nice turn up for the books because it opens up import games like that, and it is, ironically significantly more reliable than my NES because toploader and no lockout chip shenanigans.

Looks like fun.

Ha, that penguin game is pretty cool. Love the music and the graphics, it's like Kirby X Mega Man!

Woah, nice find... I'm always looking to do more obscure games for my channel so if you have any requests totally fire away!

I've actually just started the new Famicom Detective Club Part II series, which is a detective game sort of like Phoenix Wright so far for the SNES. The games never came out in English and only Part II was translated by fans but it's okay since it is a prequel to the FDC Part I actually so no knowledge is needed.

Obviousely you could only patch the roms and play them on an emulator but it's totally worth it - I'm trying to track down a long-lost translation of Part I for the NES since that'd be totally cool to play that too (:

One more game for the LP'ing is Sweet Home for the NES - a sort of Resident Evil of the NES-era I guess mixed with some RPG goodness. Suraht has done a decent LP of that game and I'd love to do something similar.

Thanks TurnipKing for subbing' and commenting! It's hard to get subscribers and views and things when I'm just starting, and my equipment isn't great ahaha, but I am investing (: thanks for support <3

Sweet Home is an excellent call. It's one I've never really quite got invested in. I've given the translated rom a quick bash once or twice, and even went so far as to go completely insane and buy a famicom cart of it.

You might try Rabio Lepus Special on the PC Engine. It's the only home port of a rather bonkers arcade shooter that I'm quite fond of.

You're doin' God's work, son.

My first video :D Feedback would be welcome guys :D

Only just started watching but here's my first 2 cents:

* I'd go with a gradual rise in the beginning music and drop it by about 5 to 10 Db if you can as it scared the strawberry floating gooseberry fool out of me straight off the bat!
* The video keeps 'sticking' at 57 seconds and I initially thought this deliberate as you were talking about why you hated Halo 4, but it turns out it shouldn't have been frozen. Kept doing it for me until I manually move the timer forward where it'll 'un-freeze' the frame and play like it should have been (in 1080p, not sure about other resolutions).
* I assume you're splicing in various commentary tracks rather than 'one-shotting' the VO in a single take? It certainly sounds like you're quickly moving from one audio track to the next as the ambiance levels are changing in the background (which might only be something you'd notice when you also do commentary work yourself). But it seems to work if you're deliberately firing out your thoughts one after the other.

I'll give it a complete look a bit later but hopefully this'll be of some use (or you can tell me to strawberry float off if it's not :P ). Promising start though Anung, so keep it up!

*edit* oh, and one extra tip something I've remembered acutely after watching a very well made Halo video. When recording an FPS game, try and synch your on-screen position/action in between transitions. So if you're running into a transition, try and time it so the animation is completed as you dissolve the frame into the next scene. Or if you're jumping up, dissolve it at the apex and then you'll be in the new scene (but jumping down). It'll make it more difficult to edit initially (although if you plan your recordings in advance in your head you'll get used to it).

I never done it for my Bioshock 2 video guide, but it's something I plan on doing for all upcoming FPS-related videos as it'll simply look much smoother and slicker.

I feel like I need some advice. I'm just kinda throwing myself into the YouTube thing and roughly working it out as I go, and the quality of my videos has improved (just watch the X-Men one, for example, it stutters along at like 10fps), but I know they can be better.

I'd love to be able to adjust the volume as all my videos seem really quiet. I just want to make them a bit louder. I'm using Windows Movie Maker (lol, I know, right?), should I seriously consider getting some other software?

I think the visuals are about as good as they are going to get in the videos. The setting are as high as my laptop can handle, and besides, any bigger and it'd take years to upload as my internet is gooseberry fool. I tried to livestream once, it was embarrassing. I barley met Twitch's bare minimum requirements. And YouTube told me that my first Dark Souls video would take 4000 hours to upload at its original filesize. That is ridiculous, right?

Should I be writing scripts? I kinda want to keep it natural and relevant to the on-screen action, but I have started to think about stuff to say during quiet moments or repetitive scenes.

You can alter the sound levels in Audacity if you like.

Whilst you can indeed go for Sony Vegas (like Anung suggests), I, personally, am versed with the Adobe Creative Cloud suite (so Premier Pro and After Effects for videos) and would recommend that (again purely from an experience point of view).

If you need to compress videos quickly and easily then the open-source Handbrake is great for pumping up well-compressed .mp4 videos super fast with small file sizes.

Windows Movie Maker

Genuinely more useful than you'd think. It's like the Notepad of video editing.

I learned HTML using Notepad and have been a stickler for clean mark-up ever since. But there's nothing wrong with moving onwards as well with something a bit more advanced (for example I've no idea how difficult it would be to do Chroma-Keying (Green Screen) in WMM, but in Premier Pro it's just two simple settings to get a fairly decent result.

That's what editing is for. You can either write everything in advance and perform it, or cut it down to the relevant bits later.

You can also do a combination approach. Just play it as you see it, trim out "ers" and "ums", and dub extra commentary after the fact.

I think many people would be quite surprised at the amount of effort that can actually go into a dorky little let's play commentary, let alone something more elaborate.

I found a decent compromise was bullet-point like notes that you can read in order but use them more as a prompt than read them verbatim. I used the following notes for a Bravely Default guide for GamerGuides for example (notes + final YT VO below):

Ninja

Kikyo
HP: 60,000

For this fight, characters with high physical defence are recommended.

The Ninja only has two (and a half) tricks, but they're both deadly.

She can use Shippujinrai to go first and attack one character (aka Bravely Default's version of Quick Attack).

This is annoying if you have low HP characters, making you waste a good healing spell or item. At times, you may want to forsake your low HP characters and revive them with your spare BP instead.

As usual, consult a Salve-maker for your revival needs.

Secondly she can use Utsusemi to guarantee evasion of one physical attack. After evading any attack she will also counter with Transcience.

To avoid Utsusemi you can rely on magic attacks. Otherwise, use a weak attack to get rid of it, but know that you'll get stabbed with Transcience.

For offence, the Ninja has high evade, so don't use normal attacks and stick with attack abilities like the Valkyrie's Judgement; also avoid fighting with low level jobs.

To make this battle a breeze, deck out your Knight with the best armours and have them use Shield Strike every turn to bump up their defence further.

Also, change your other characters to spell-casters and drop them to less than 20% HP before the battle.

Kikyo's attacks will all be redirected to your Knight thanks to Protect Ally and with the right setup your Knight will take next to no damage from her attacks.

Then your mages can blast the Ninja with their magic without fearing her attacks.

Note that Transcience isn't redirected by Protect Ally (poor Ringabel learns this the hard way in our video), hence why your attackers must all be mages.

Oh, for sure. But as Andrew says - there's no harm in moving up to the next level. I don't think it's even possible to do green screen in WMM. It's great for the basics, and everything I've learned about the nitty-gritty of jamming bits of moving pictures together and editing them and stuff so far has been with using that, so I owe it a lot.

I do use Audacity just to record the commentary at the moment, so I shall investigate further on how to increase the volume, check out some tutorials on how to get the most from it. I need to clear my audio up a bit as well, the background noise sounds atrocious at times, like a humming or buzzing. I guess I could clear it up with Audacity too?

I've started to use the bullet points approach - I don't ever want it to come across as reading from a script - so just little words or sentences to remind me of the point I could make at certain times. I'm no stranger to writing words about videogames but I like my writing to feel like writing, and anything I'm saying out loud to sound like things I would say.

Thanks for the tips you guys!

Also, would anyone be interested in doing a collaboration or two?

I created a mini sound booth for my Blue Yeti mic (using a container, some sound foam and some spray glue) for about £20 all in. Made a HUGE difference to the quality of my VO work (seriously). Which is even more surprising considering I'm currently living on a building site (literally).

And I'm always up for some collaborations, just let me know your ideas and when you're looking to do them :)

Man, I really forgot how much of a bastard that game can be. It just gives you no clues as to what you should be doing next.

Great videos so far.

What software are you using to capture the gameplay/editing?

Just had my first copyright claim! Exciting times.

Odd thing is though, it was a claim from Rooster Teeth on a Sonic 2 (XBLA) video...
