So here is a bit of fun I am going to show a retro game related item that I have displayed on a marble base and let you all see if you either know what it is or can guess what it and its function is

At a guess it's some old RF adapter. Maybe for an old Atari or something.

The plug on the right looks like a coax socket, and with VHF on there, I’m guessing it’s the insides of an RF connector. 1990 maybe suggests Mega Drive.

Grr, Devlin too quick.

Yeah, that was my thinking, too... although...

...I was wondering about that, as well.

Hang on, I've just noticed the VHF wording on the circuit board; it's not something to do with radio, is it?

Soooooo Very Very Warm

It is to do with converting but it came from inside a console, added by SEGA themselves..... I can give you both the full story now if you want just let me know...

Is it a converter that came inside the Megadrive 2? Either that or something to do with the MegaCD?

Kind of heading on the right tracks with it being inside a Megadrive

It was inside a particular type of Megadrive (1 not 2) and allowed it to output a Pal RFU type signal when it was not made originally to do so...... I think you are one of the closest but everyone is doing so well with this

Is it a 60hz to 50hz RFU converter that was modded into a Sega Genesis?

You are really really barking up the right tree here... I will basically answer what it is in the spoiler below

When releasing the Megadrive in some areas of Asia that conformed to the Pal TV standard SEGA took Japanese Megadrives and had workers alter them inside to make them run in Japanese but output a Pal signal running at 50hz to be sold in those markets.... this unit pictured here does not affect the HZ as thats done through jumpers elsewhere on the board, but it does add an RFU socket to the machine..... its a little board that they had connected inside the megadrive........ I got hold of one of these Pal Asian Models from a Carboot for about £5 and followed a guide to convert it back to its true Japanese factory specs changing the jumpers and desoldering and removing this board so it would run in 60hz, maintain the Japanese Language and be used through scart output not RFU, I kept this little board as a keepsake and an interesting piece of Videogame history though and when I came across it again during a recent tidy up decided to show it off here and see if I anyone else would realise what it was
