PostDoes the 9-5 job still exist?

This is a relation to the work thread, but I'd be interested to know how many hours people who are in full time employment work, and whether they think they have a good work/life balance.

I'd really like to be in a job where I could work 9-5, but I think over the years this type of job no longer exists, at least if you want to earn a good salary. When I've been looking around it seems 9-6 is becoming the norm, but when you factor in this is the standard hours and more will probably be required and that there is going to be commuting on both ends, it all seems a bit gooseberry fool.

Currently I work from home, start at about 8.20 and normally finish around 6pm, but depending on what I want to get gone, this can continue until 7pm or later. If I take out my miniscule lunch break (normally 20 minutes) plus any other breaks I take throughout the day (such as walking the dog), I probably average something like 47.5 hours per week, which based on my contracted hours of 37.5, means I am doing more than an extra day of work per week.

Yes?

I work 9-5.30 Monday to Friday in an office, and I get a 1-hour lunch break.

I'm like Drumstick. Almost:

8-16:45 (Monday to Thursday) 8-12 on casual Fridays.

Takes me like half an hour to get to work so half 5 onwards midweek is my time.

37 hour working week and I will never work more than that unless agreed in advance. Instant the clock ticks over I'm gone :slol:

This, though I do 9.30 to 6pm one day a week.

I also get two paid 15 minute breaks.

That reminds me of when I first started working. I was out of the office at 5.30pm almost every day which meant my PC running Windows 3.1 would be just switched off rather than waiting for it to exit first.

I work a 7 hour shift whenever I want (unless it's my turn to cover a specific slot) between 8am and 6pm. The main strength of my employer (cited in a survey completed by its employees) is the work/life balance. It's excellent.

3.1 8-) We've got remote workstations we log onto for doing CAD stuff, so they're quite often left on overnight anyway. Just tell the actual desktop to shut down and the remote one keeps ticking away wherever it is.

Forgot to answer this bit.

I suppose mine is ideal for the time being. As soon as the clock hits 4pm I'm gone and work is out of my mind until 8am the next morning. No chance am I working an extra minute unless it's agreed in advance. Like OB, the work/life balance for me is probably the best part of my job.

Sorry, yes I do have a great work/life balance. I don't ever have to work late or early (unless I want to) and I never work weekends or Bank Holidays.

We get somewhat flexi time here, you have to be in the office between 9:30 and 16:30 and you must do a 39 hour week, how you fit your working day around that is up to you. I usually do 9:00 to 17:30 but I really just do the work that needs doing and bail when its done, its pretty decent really.

At the moment I work Monday-Wednesday 7am-6pm and Thursday 7am-3:30pm

My usual shift pattern though is 4 on 4 off, two days of 6am-6pm and then two days of 12pm-12am.
With a 1 hour lunch break.

When I'm doing that I don't mind working weekends, time off during the week is way better.

Usually 4 days Mon-Fri 9:20am to 8:00pm, 1 day Mon-Fri 10am to 6pm, and 10 hours dotted around here and there at the weekend. I take an hour lunch during weekdays.

In crunch mode, though, all bets are off. Once every couple of months I'd have to work for 24-36 hours at a time.

I work "10-4 Mon-Fri" but I actually spend most of my waking day and weekends working. Last night I got an instant message from a coworker at around 20:30 and had to do about an hour's work right there and then. This happens all the time and I never get paid an extra penny for it because I have an agreed 'salary' (bursary) for a year's work and that's that.

My boss does turn a blind eye to me working from home whenever I want though so it's not all bad. I had a particularly stressful Sun-Wed last week - had about 6 hours sleep total over four days to meet an absurd deadline for a project I was given last-minute - so I just didn't turn up Thu-Fri :toot:

I guess in that respect the work-life balance isn't too bad.

Jesus wept, what do you do?

I currently work 8am-6pm, but I work from home and take breaks to walk the dog/go to the gym etc so it's not too bad. Finish my current contract on Tuesday and taking a few months off though :toot:
