Please don't tell me ill need a strawberry floating 8K TV now. :fp:

Considering even the One X struggles with 4K (and that at 30FPS let alone 60) there's zero hope of the next gen going 8K for any game and I can't see sales of 8K tv's taking off any time soon as all the manufacturing effort at the moment is around making 4K the new standard.

Microsoft confirms new Xbox consoles are in the works

Microsoft is developing new Xbox consoles, the company's head of Xbox said on stage at E3 2018 today.

"Our hardware team is deep into developing the next generation of Xbox consoles, where we will once again deliver on our commitment to set the benchmark for console gaming," said Phil Spencer, master of ceremonies for Microsoft's Xbox E3 showcase.

No details on the hardware were offered, including when we might expect it. But despite the lack of details, it's likely reassuring for Xbox fans that there will be a followup to the Xbox One X. Not that they had much reason to doubt there would be.

Console lifecycles can span several years, and by November 2019 the Xbox One X will be two years old, so a refresh could make sense then.

Sony recently confirmed that that PS4 is nearing the end of its life span, though that console is already five years old.

Microsoft Confirms Xbox ‘Scarlet’ And New Game Streaming Service

This week, Microsoft is in Los Angeles where the company announced that they acquired five gaming studios and that they are working on next-gen consoles as well as a new game streaming service.

Phil Spencer said that the company’s cloud engineers are working to bring console-quality games streaming to any device. Microsoft already allows in-home game streaming with its Xbox console and the Xbox app on the PC and this streaming service is a natural extension of that experience. It’s also not hard to imagine that the streaming service will be linked to Xbox Game Pass too.

Spencer also confirmed that the company is working on new iterations of the Xbox console but this shouldn’t come as a big surprise. I have been told that the codename for the next series of devices is currently Scarlet but I don’t know a timeline for release at this time.

But, seeing as streaming is going to be a focus, the company’s mixed reality headsets are evolving to have more features and applications, and the company’s ability to have one game run on multiple platforms, it’s not too hard to imagine what the company may include in the next iteration of the console hardware.

Any way you look at it, Microsoft has put a considerable amount of effort into making the Xbox brand exciting and the future looks promising for those invested in the ecosystem.

We need not worry about the CPU side of the next-gen machines. AMD's Ryzen offers phenomenal performance for the amount of silicon area it uses, it's power efficient and it's broadly competitive with the best on the market - Intel's Core architecture. As we've discussed in the past, the potential here for deeper, richer, more complex games - or indeed more titles running at 60fps - is mouth-watering.

The issue is that while AMD can offer a generational leap over the graphics performance of the base PlayStation 4 (effectively the main target current-gen target platform), delivering the same increase in performance over PS4 Pro and especially Xbox One X is far more challenging.

Doubling X's GPU power is achievable, but if the aim is also to double frame-rate, the ability to deliver richer graphics is therefore more limited. If the objective is to lock to native 4K and deliver hugely improved visuals, again, 2x Xbox One X performance isn't enough.

More probable is innovative use of custom hardware. There are already rumours of Sony collaborating directly with AMD on its Navi architecture, and PS4 Pro offered some fascinating technology in allowing a console GPU to punch well above its weight in supporting 4K screens, even though third-party developer buy-in was relatively limited. Next-gen is a crossroads for game technology and this time around, we may well see alternative visions from Sony and Microsoft etched directly into the silicon, with each taking strategic bets on the future of graphics via the integration of custom hardware.

I'm very confident in MS' hardware division after the X. I can't under estimate how small the thing is and the hovis method inovations and super sampling on chip (not software) point to a skilled set of engineers. No doubt they'll use Turn 10, Playground and other studio's to benchmark performance issues like they did X.

I also think that both systems will be much closer in raw power terms, in fact I think MS has had such a kick to the nads this gen that they will try to beat PS5's stats, it's a tricky situation but I'm looking forward to it, and if Fable 4 and Halo Infinite launch with it, it should hit the ground running, not least because they'll be on gamepass and you get 1month free with Xbox's these days.

I'm just glad to see a good old fashioned hardware fight as hopefully it will result in both machines being better.

They're just going to go back and forth every 3 years now anyway, and the gap between PS4 and Xbox One when they launched isn't going to exist.

Do you not think that Sony will also want to have the most powerful console? Unless there is a massive difference in power I don't think it is going to make a great deal of difference to what people buy. There are going to be people who preorder without trying both and this gen has proven that people will still buy an Xbox over a PS when the PS is more powerful so the reverse is also likely to be true.

The figures don't back up your statement, 360 was market leader last gen (apart from last year or so memes) and lots of people seemingly went from 360 to PS4. To say all people are restricted to one console maker simply isn't true.

If Sony and/or MS launch with a killer app then most gamers will go there, I won't but im in a minority.

Hovis do make pretty good bread so maybe they decided to get into a new area of expertise.
I await the bready response from Microsoft and Sony.
Will they go with standard loaves, panini's or the bagel?

The bread isle will never be the same again.

But I doubt that was due to hardware superiority, more likely MS's policies and games available on PS4.

I think it was a combination, no doubt mattrick f**ked MS at the start, I reckon PS5 will still 'win' next gen because of it's install base, if they keep doing odd stuff like the cross play stuff it may get hit but I think Xbox will be closer next gen if only cos Spencer seems to have identified the problems (albeit late on) and with his promotion, can pump money into studio's and the Xbox gaming platform as a whole.

I don't think we can say anything about who's going to win the next gen yet as there's still so much time for any side (Nintendo may do a complete 180 and release a mega console a year after PS5 and Xbox 2 although I think it's unlikely) to completely screw things up.
Both Sony and Microsoft now have a fair few studios to make games and I feel people will just go where their friends are (I'm going to get a PS5 just because the sunday group play on that platform) and where the games they like are and I have a feeling tribalism amongst the masses is dead.

My personal idea is to get a PS5 to play games with the guys on sunday and when it's released get a Xbox 2 X for the better hardware and the exclusives from Microsoft.
I may even get a Switch 2 if they announce it but I'm unsure at the moment.

People weren't locked in to an eco system at that point. Microsoft really strawberry floated up this gen, it was the gen to get right moving forward as both platforms adopt the iPhone method.

It's going to be hard to win customers now that they and their friends are on Platform B.

Price was probably a big a reason as any for driving sales this time rather than power, it was just that more powerful hardware was another bonus the PS4 could offer at launch. Now those people are locked in to the walled garden Sony have a bit more licence to take the piss.

I do feel that there is no point in having both and if you are invested into one system you will generally stay with them unless the other platform offers an incentive/ has better exclusives. Sony has the better exclusives at the moment and have done a good job at converting the masses to their console. It would actually benefit Sony if they ensure the PS5 is backwards compatible and I hope they don't mess this up.

On the whole though I am very happy with playing on my PS4 Pro until late 2020. It is powerful enough to produce amazing looking games. The area I want improved is the framerate. Having just had a quick go on bloodborne, which just doesn't feel smooth enough from Dark Souls Remastered and now DS2, it just emphasises how important frame rate it.

People weren't buying £40 games as downloads last time either.

If both consoles are backwards compatible next gen then most people would most likely stick to their current ecosystem.

That's your opinion and quite a backward one at that. So I like PlayStation exclusives and I like Xbox exclusives, is that not good enough reason to own both systems? Which is something you just pointed out yourself making your idea of owning both pointless daft as strawberry float.

For how great the Xbox One X is, can't help but wonder how different it would be if they tried to compete on price with PS4 Pro.
