I've got such a backlog, and have bought so many games digitally, that it'd be a huge early selling point if they'd work on PS5.

The main issue with PS4's BC was PS3's "exotic" Cell architecture, even with the best emulators most PS3 games run like gooseberry fool.

The only solution on PS4 was PS Now streaming, which literally uses a server farm full of PS3 consoles.

PS5 will use the same AMD x86 architecture as PS4, so PS4 games will just run natively, without the need for Xbox One style download or emulation.

Same goes for Xbox Two, these consoles are just PCs now so PS5/PS4 and Xbox Two/Xbox One BC will be effortless.

More T3 clickbait. I'd like to congratulate gamerforever getting a job as a writer there.

I think it's going to become pretty obvious that 2020 is the year when nothing is said about next gen in the first 6 months of 2019.

I hope Sony concentrate on having good launches for games like Last of Us 2 and Days Gone rather than bother about next gen just yet.

Stuff has got much better in recent months, whereas T3 has gradually gone to the dogs, disappointingly. Their website is just a load of rubbish compared to the likes of their sister site Techradar, The Verge or CNet (which has also gone downhill). But then it’s like Eurogamer - they’re all chasing those hyperlinks and easy hits.

Sony's treatment of E3 2019 reminds me of Nintendo's treatment of E3 2016 where they showed up with nothing but BOTW.

I think it's more to do with Sony stepping away from E3 and simply relying on their blog instead, they might be back for E3 2020, but I think the days of them having huge conferences (like E3 2015) are sadly over.

These codenames are far more exciting and interesting than what they end up going with.

Having a "next-gen" base system at only 6 TFLOPS makes no sense at all.

All next-gen games will be required to support this, surely better to have a clean break with 10-12 TFLOPS being the lower limit.

If they want to have a 12 TFLOP base system and a 16 TFLOP "beast" system at launch I wouldn't be opposed to that.

I always find these sort of articles so painful to read, so much hypothesis and dropping of "placeholder" names that mean nothing. I mean there isn't exactly a lot of text to that linked piece and yet they manage to squeeze in all of the following "codenames":

  • Scarlett
  • Anaconda
  • Lockhart
  • Scarlett Pro
  • Scarlett Arcade
  • Danta
  • xCloud
  • Anthem
  • Anthem V2
  • Anaconda Cloud
  • GameCore
  • Maverick
  • Roma

It's been pointed out that that is a 5, not an S.

(There is an S used elsewhere and it's different.)

I think CES will give us at least a glimpse of the tech that's going to be used in the next gen consoles.

There's a keynote from AMD who will apparently make some big reveals so I expect versions of whatever they announce to be used.

Interview with Brad Sams, summary from Resetera user Luke Tavas -

The winstore is a mess because Terry blocked stuff from Xbox making into windows. So some features that Xbox supports like ready to start that windows not supports is the reason of the installation issues. Ms is rebuilding the store now, this time with Xbox input and should solve those problems

Gamecore is a project to bring Xbox OS bits to windows (my guess the virtualization environment) to make development for both to be 100% equal (I guess keyboard and mouse support for Xbox also came from that)

MS should announce lots of games this year. They were holding because cloud computing will be big on their 1st party but they were waiting for Crackdown to release and prove that it works.

He says Sony skipped this year because they know ps4 won't run ps5 games whereas xbone, S and X will run any Scarlett game so they are going to announce tons of games to launch around the scarlet launch this year already. He says he knows some but is looking for further confirmation (and he says Ms is pitching publishers and developers for the base not resetting and xbone being able to run scarlet games so they are pretty confident)

He don't know how they will do to support the jaguar cores for much long but they believe they will use streaming to allow it.

MS has the tech to do more than physics on the cloud and they will gradually roll out once they get streaming out of the gate (think Raytracing on the cloud)

MS had a streaming stick ready to launch already, but they canceled. The current prototype is a streaming box with local hardware to reduce latency (likely AI processors)

Don't know how many consoles they will launch, they are still deciding. There's a chance some of the versions to launch only at their stores and specific retailers to avoid confusion.

Xbox live will be more integrated in the os. Looks like he described something that just works for all games and magically can even invite a friend on your list to a non Xbox live game. (he said more like as a goal for the team but they don't know when and if they will deliver it)

Anaconda aims at 4k60

Ms is also pitching cloud to developers showing they can sell more games, dlc, mtx if the developers allow the game to be streamed. Going for 100% compatibility. Said that Ms is working very hard to get the cloud right. Not just on the tech but all aspects including library.

The discless S is basically a S with the disc entry photoshopped out. May be cheaper due subzidies and are in production since October last year. He thinks it will be announced in the first half of the year to launch on the years end.

It sounds like he believes XCloud will not cost extra, and that it may just be included with Xbox Live or Game Pass.

I saw something the other day that the PS5 and Next Xbox will be unveiled in 2020.

It makes sense as announcing this year could make people thinking of buying a current gen machine for Christmas wait until new machines are out.
I wonder if we'll see leaks about devkits this time?

This is utter folly!

So developers won't be able to be ambitious with their design next-gen because the games will have to be compatible with 2013 hardware?
