PostRe: Rumour: PS5 and Xbox Two coming 2020 (Ryzen CPU, Navi GPU, 24GB RAM, 12 TFLOPS)

The next gen won't have the advantage of a new resolution as I'm pretty sure 8K TV isn't going to become reality any time soon and even if it does I can't see those with new 4K sets upgrading in enough numbers for it to become worthwhile supporting by games.
The real upgrade will be the CPU and the ability to have more fully scripted characters in a game on screen at the same time. The effect will not be solely visual but will I hope be more than enough to count as a true generational leap.

Or it could be gooseberry fool and I end up buying nothing more than a slightly upgraded One X. Only time will tell but I'm an eternal optimist when it comes to new consoles.

The missus won't let me have a TV over 42", so 4K on TV isn't a big deal for me, but next-gen 4K VR will be amazing. 8K will never be adopted for home TVs, the only practical use is public video walls.

The biggest improvements in graphics will be lighting and particle effects, for games aiming to achieve photo-realism there's going to be a huge boost here.

We've also recently started to see games with almost human-like facial animations that pull us out of the uncanny valley, the techniques that are being used in AAA games will become affordable to all developers to implement.

Yep, pretty much no UK home that isn't a mansion has the room for anything above 4K to make a difference.
Sure, huge US houses may see the need for 100 inch but that's just going to look stupid here.
It might be interesting to see what size maximum TV the people on here think is the maximum that can be used in their house as I fave a feeling 60inch will be about the max and for that 4K is more than enough.

Our house has a chimney breast in the front room, so the TV goes in the corner and 42"is the maximum I'm allowed (anything else would look ridiculous).

If we move to a newer house with a greater distance between the wall and the couch I'll go up to 55" as that's the cut-off point for OLED (I really wish they'd go smaller, I'd love even bedroom TVs to be OLED as standard in the future).

The only place for those vast TV's in the UK is pubs and sports bars.

Yep, 42" is the biggest TV I can go to in the living room without it looking ridiculous. It's perfectly fine though, and does the job rather nicely. The only thing I need to upgrade is to a 4k with HDR.

Did that Ray Tracing demo use over a million dollars worth of NVIDA graphics cards to do. I still think that stuff is at least a decade away from home use.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

The video explains that some of the effects can be replicated, though not perfectly, using few light "bounces", the shadow blurring also seems reasonable.

They said on the Digital foundry video it used 4 titan X video cards so seeing that level of performance is not going to happen until PS5 Pro at the earliest and more likely PS6.
The next gen is going to be good but not 4 titan x good.

I want to be alive to see that, my prediction is 2048 ;)

Edit: Sooo much Y2K aesthetic going on in that video

Really hope we get another big leap like this, we're really close to photorealism now, especially in hindsight

I have heard from three different sources stating that Microsoft is pushing forward with new hardware but that the release timeline is still several years away.

The company is looking to hire a specialist with GDDR6 expertise and they are also exploring how to deeply integrate game streaming into their next console.

While we might think of game streaming as meaning that the entire game is streamed in real-time from a cloud server, there are more realistic possibilities in the near-term while the latency challenge is overcome.

As for the timeline for the next console release, I’ve heard that within three years is a realistic possibility; the company is not currently in a rush to replace the Xbox One X as it has a significant horsepower advantage when compared to the current offering from Sony. And as you would expect, the console will be backward and forwards compatible, much like the Xbox One X; Paul is also hearing that Microsoft is building another iteration of the Xbox as well.

Even though Microsoft is pushing more towards the enterprise with its Windows and Office services, Xbox is one of the few brands inside of Microsoft that has managed to create a huge consumer-following and has a large upside ahead of it as gaming, and eSports, continue to grow. The company has also recently announced that it is expanding its E3 presence that further shows that Microsoft is not shying away from gaming.

While Nintendo has carved out a sizeable chunk of the casual gaming market with its Switch, the Xbox only has one primary competitor; Sony. Even though the PlayStation has the lead for this generation, Microsoft is making significant investments in hardware/content to close the gap with Sony and has the financial backing to go all-in on gaming to win the next generation.

Nothing too surprising but he usually has solid MS sources.

If this generation has proved anything it’s that there will now be a continual back and forth in terms of power every 4 years or so. Inevitable there will be an X and Pro equivalent for the Xbox One 2 and PS5.

Plus the only reason Xbox One was so underpowered at launch was because they were pissing about with the camera. Next time I’m not expecting there to be nearly as much in it.

I think you are probably right. If the new consoles launch in 2020/21, then we will probably see beefed up versions launching in 2023/24.

I would say I am not ready for a new generation, but I am not sure I will be able to wait another 5 or 6 years.

With Q4 2020 looking more and more likely it's now just a question of when the official reveals will be. Will anyone go with the One X strategy of announcing at 2019 E3 for a Q4 2020 release or will they go with a more normal route of announcing some time in 2020?

That's too early, announcing a new generation a year and a half before it starts is a sure fire way to kill sales over the holidays of that year.

Sony and Microsoft got it right last time, full unveil 7 months before launch during the same year.

In 2025, most definitely.

Same format as now. PS4 and Xbox One launched for 1080p TVs but swapped over to 4K at the halfway point. Expect the same to happen with PS5 and Xbox.

Can't see where the TV manufacturers go after 8K though, which surely has to be the definitive picture in terms of pixels. Roll-away TVs is my guess.

It's not about resolution, I think 4K is the peak, outside of VR it's pointless to go beyond.

As described at the top of the page, 12 Tflops is going to give us close to photo-realistic graphics at 4K.

Man, I hope not. To be honest, I'll be amazed if next gen has anything like enough tech horsepower to support 8K gaming. The leap from 1080p to 4K is quite a jump; from 4k to 8k it's substantially bigger in terms of the tech needed. No doubt we'll see "checkerboard" 8K, though ;-).

In my view, next gen will focus on 4K/60 and that'll gradually then become the standard.
