It's certainly going to be realistic choice if they can somehow solve the latency problem as most people just bung the box under the TV and that's it so any machine that does the job of playing next gen games at the same level will be a decent option.
My only concern is having to pay the prices we see on the store as they're often more expensive than just buying a physical copy and as good as Game Pass is it does lack content.

A potential £99 gateway to access next generation is huge, unprecedented.

Hardware price has ALWAYS been a huge blocker for the growth of gaming, so simply being able to "stream" the latest games will be nothing short of a revolution for the industry.

The "dream" scenario is a Smart TV app that EVERYONE will be able to access, then you only have to pay for the subscription fee, games and the controller.

Xbox is in a great position as it could potentially delivery 16+ years worth of Xbox games.

Sony are also in a position, with PS Now, to just hit the ground running.

Maybe they could have the Xbox One playing next gen games through the streaming service too.

Sounds like it could be a £99 launch price.

Resetera insider Matt said "Yep" to this story, 2020 "current target for the next Xbox.", is better than PS Now, scaleable resolution due to your internet speed, no streaming to XB1s.

Hmm, when PS Now was available on PS3 it was restricted to playing PS3 games only despite PS3/PS4 games being available on the service.

Resolution and controller aside, there was nothing stopping stopping PS3 from playing PS4 games over PS Now.

I'm also hoping that PS5/Xbox Two have revolutionary controllers designed with VR in mind.

This makes me apprehensive. I'm sure that the bulk of the market will be totally fine with that approach but I suspect that many of us GRcadian folk would baulk at slipped resolution or stuttering. I can see the streaming solution becoming the main way of playing games in the future but not yet to the standard that we'd like it to be.

..and what happens when there are fits and starts? Anyone who sometimes experiences Amazon/NowTV/Netflix dropping into SD will know what I mean. Caching won't be a solution for online play.

Yes?

Then you buy the full price box instead.

As long as there is a proper console alongside it, then this isn’t a bad idea.

It will be a sad day when consoles are online only though, anybody that has moved home and been without internet for a couple of weeks will know the absolute pain in the arse it is. Now imagine it with no games to play. :dread:

I'd buy the proper hardware myself but I do have a few mates who have ridiculously fast internet connections so could be a goer. Azure cloud tech is pretty amazing.

They will probably use Amazon Web Services and then put a Microsoft sticker on top. 8-)

Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that Microsoft is currently “all hands” on creating datacenters capable of powering the company’s game streaming service. Referred to as codename “XCloud” internally, Microsoft has been experimenting with combining four lots of custom Xbox consoles into a single server blade for its datacenters. These servers will launch initially with developers in mind to build and develop games in the cloud instead of local debug machines, and then to stream games to consumers.

Interesting.
Hopefully the cpu boost in next gen consoles will be the real upgrade rather than just being focused on the graphics card. It should be pretty easy to get a cpu that's massively more capable than what's in the One X as that was just a slight upgrade over a chip that was already 4 years old.

Not in the least but interested in a steaming service as the only option but it would be nice as to have while games download.

Is it really a potential option? Developers still can't get servers for multiplayer games right on release. It must be an insane demand on bandwidth and electricity consumption (at the server end).

Only possible with the cloud, as shown with those X1 exclusives (and eventually to be released Crackdown 3).

Yes?

We'll be unwrapping our new PS5 consoles Christmas 2019
Sony's secret plan to launch the PS5 before the Xbox Two just got real

Sony tried to throw everyone off the PS5 scent when the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, John Kodera, said that there would be no new PlayStation until 2021.

However, here at T3 we knew better, using our deep-cover industry insiders to unveil what appeared to be Sony's secret PS5 launch plan, a covert operation running exactly counter to Kodera's statement that would see the PlayStation 5 hit store shelves in 2019, two years before the gaming industry expected and, crucially, before Microsoft's next Xbox Two console (codenamed Xbox Scarlett).

Next year?

I can’t see it. 2020 maybe but I can’t see Sony or MS launching next year.
