Ridiculous headline, why should it have Microsoft worried?

If they're both aiming for the same price, and they're both working with AMD, then surely the specs will be similar.

Edit: Similar bullshit headline by T3 - https://www.t3.com/news/the-ps5-release ... -good-news

So you don't think Microsoft should be worried that Sony seem to be putting huge effort and money into the PS5 and are willing to wait until a year after the XBox 2 release?
It's going to be rather hard for Microsoft to keep hold of the title they want of worlds most powerful console in those circumstances.

Not really, I think both will put huge effort into getting the best hardware for the cost, and both will launch around the same time. What's the say MS aren't doing the same?

PS2 had a year head start on Xbox and blew it out of the water sales-wise.

Xbox 360 had a year head start on PS3 and managed to match it in terms of install base at the end of the generation.

It seems that the next gen will indeed be a decent improvement over this gen and will hopefully make some game innovation possible again.
Hopefully we'll see open world games with much more interesting npc's as we have large enough worlds already we just need them to be filled with more interesting and varied things to do.

PS3 and 360. The fact MS was shutting down studios, starting to push the casual market so much with kinect amongst other things.

I was being a bit flippant I guess. I'm not saying it was only because of that, but I think it did have a impact on things.

A little bit, you could see it turning around 2010, Sony's first party had just hit their stride with releases like Uncharted 2 and GOW 3 where as Microsoft lost two of their biggest studios, Bungie and Bizarre, to Activision. I feel like this had a huge impact this generation with Sony's first party output maintaining great form while Microsoft's seem to be lost.

Microsoft acquiring Ninja Theory and forming a big studio in Santa Monica could help them right the ship, but games from these studios won't release for another 3 or 4 years.

I agree AI should get more attention going forward and although Ellie from the previous gen begs to differ, it's in these huge open-worlds where there's (literally) room for improvement.

Iv'e been spending alot of time in Watch Dogs 2's world for the past few months and I found it annoying how they overreact to the slightest thing.

Manoeuvring your vheicle out of a car park? "Get back on the road". "Learn to drive, idiot".

Twizzling your thunderball (that pool ball tied on the end of a string) even when it's not touching anybody? People around you will get triggered over it.

Getting my phone out to take a photo in-game too attracts unwarranted attention and aggravation from anyone nearby.

I would prefer better graphics and framerate with checkerboarding than slightly better looking games at native 4k.

It depends on the type of game.

A lot of new games like Last of Us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima are going for that softer filmic look where sharp edges aren't essential.

For me 4K seems to be most useful in the VR space. Sony's top end phones now use 4K screens (god knows why) so the tech is there for 4K VR headsets.

Aim for 2k 60fps, 4K with console games isn't all that. I'd rather the enhanced features (like what's with Shadow of War) than 4K without the enhanced features.

Agreed.
I think the midgen refresh consoles prove the point quite well that 2K is with checker board is almost as good as while 4K using much less of the power available.

Still don't understand the big thing about 4k in games when we still don't utilise 1080p. When we get games in 1080p that look as good as watching a film, then we can think about increasing resolution.

Yes?

A Few More Details About Microsoft’s Xbox Scarlett Game Streaming Service

First, Microsoft is building a traditional console that you would expect from the Xbox brand. I think it’s important to point this out so that those who prefer to have all their hardware locally, will have an option with the next generation Xbox.

As for specs for this device, that’s still not known at this time as it’s the early days of development for that piece of hardware. But what I am starting to hear more about is the second device, a streaming box that is designed to work with the company’s upcoming game streaming platform.

Scarlett Cloud as one person called it, is the game streaming service that we have all been envisioning ever since Microsoft showed off a demo game streaming at its all-employee meeting back in 2013. But this time, Microsoft has a path to bring it to market.

The second ‘console’ that the company is working on is a lower-powered device that is currently planned to ship with the next generation device that is designed for game-streaming. But the catch here is that Microsoft thinks it has figured out how to handle the latency sensitive aspects of gaming.

The cloud console will have a limited amount of compute locally for specific tasks like controller input, image processing, and importantly, collision detection. The downside of this is that it since more hardware is needed locally, it will raise the price of the streaming box but it will still cost significantly less than what we are accustomed to paying for a new-generation console which should help expand the platform’s reach.

When it comes to games, all Scarlett games will run on all Scarlett devices. Meaning, both consoles will be first-class citizens and there is not expected to be an awkward ‘this game only runs on the non-cloud Scarlett’.

The cloud version of Scarlett is further along in the development cycle than the traditional console that will also be released in 2020. This device does make me wonder if it has any relationship to the Xbox Hobart streaming device that was nearly released two years ago but was canceled late in the development cycle.

Microsoft has become quite confident in their streaming solution and now that they figured out how to bring it to market after many years of development, they are pushing forward with those plans.

The cloud version will be $100- $125.

Very interesting. This means that people can buy a next-gen console, with all its power, at a very affordable price. They just need a good internet connection. And for people who don't have fast internet or regular internet access, then they don't have grounds to complain about Microsoft because those customers will have the option to pay for the full hardware. It will also benefit the hardcore who want the ultimate performance and don't mind paying. Streaming does work (I've tried PS Plus) so if Microsoft can enter the next-gen at a price is that is possibly half of PS5 then they could immediately dominate - 'Xbox Two for £179? Why not!'

The other intriguing prospect is that Microsoft could annually upgrade the performance of 'Xbox Scarlett' and there would be no cost to the streaming box owners!

Makes sense to me, PlayStation Now already works pretty much fine with my network connection with no input lag or image compression issues.

Ultimately, gaming will join the likes of TV/Movies (Netflix) and music (Spotify) by simply being delivered as an app.

Pricing will be important, will people buy £350 hardware if they can simply have an app on their Smart TV?
