Expensive accessories like that need there to be a large install base, there were 50m PS4s in the wild before Sony released PSVR. I'd expect the same for PSVR2.

It depends on how good it is I suppose.
If PSVR 2 is super amazing and they can make it at a decent price it could help showcase PS5 and thus increase sales.
Maybe something like the next Elder Scrolls game as a standard and VR experience on day one or Ace Combat 8.

How on earth are most people supposed to afford a PS5 AND a PSVR2?

The audience would be so small that developers/publishers wouldn't support it.

How did anyone manage to buy the Pro and VR?
Both can be launched at the same time and people don't need to pick them up at once but seeing games running on PSVR 2 may convince them to buy a PS5 and then a VR headset when they can.

Never is a very long time.

I expect the next gen to have physical drives, possibly with a cheaper "online only" version.

PS6/XB3 may well drop them though, by 2025/26 you'd hope internet connections would be at a good enough level to make it feasible.

We need competition on digital game sales before it happens though. Or else we're all getting screwed by the official store prices. :dread:

There is a market for physical games, even if digital overtakes them. While we still have competition in the console space I don't see physical going away as it would concede a big advantage to the competitor (although you might gain a price advantage, so I can fully see digital only consoles existing alongside physical capable consoles for that reason, similar to PSP go).

I'd be happy to not see a PS5 for another 4 years. I imagine by then I'd have bought a new TV and would be in a position to consider a new console.

Games look strawberry floating awesome now and they're only gonna look better as the devs get more in tune with the machines.

People are in too much of a rush for a skynet type situation to happen.

Maybe our new machine overlords will be nice.
Why do people always assume they'll enslave us all or use us as batteries?

I can see why they'd be upset when we give them such a harsh reception.

I can see there being some kind of legislation put in place mandating that consoles support alternative marketplaces. So rather than the iOS situation where its the appstore or nothing youll have an Android situation where different appstores are allowed to operate.

That has to happen to make the digital future viable on console.

The EU will sort out that legislation handy enough. ;)

I actually wrote a sentence saying that but took it out to avoid being political in a games thread.

I'm sure there will always be a market for physical games but I'm not sure if that market is going to be remain big enough for it to be worth developers supporting. Destiny 2 will get a disc release this September but by next spring the version of Destiny 2 you actually play will be a very different beast once it's been patched and updated a bunch. The disc release will make your initial download shorter but thats all having a disc will do for you. The disc versions of Master Chief Collection, No Man's Sky and Streetfighter 5 are only worth having if you desperately want a box to put on a shelf. The game on those discs isn't worth playing before you downloaded a whole pile of updates.

That's true, and I do have concerns about the availability of games in the future when even physical releases rely heavily on patches and updates. But I think it's also something that varies a lot depending on the type of game. Online, continuous-update mmo-like games like Destiny are forgivable for relying on off-disc content because the genre they are in necessitates it. But more singleplayer focused games are all there and fully playable off-disc, even if they do have some unpatched bugs.

Yeah, I have to agree with bear in that the majority of discs are just download keys nowdays.

For my PS4 I have migrated over to download versions in the vast majority of cases. I still get Koei Tecmo Warriors games in disc format because the games are usually playable with only minor download updates and they still included manuals... but they've stopped doing this for the past couple of games.

By shipping unfinished games and removing manuals, publishers have been trying to force folk over to the download channel. I'm kinda comfortable with this... but I'll buy fewer games and/or wait for price reductions in the monopolised storefronts.

This isn't true. Discs that are literally just download keys are in the very small minority.

Even No Man's Sky disc does contain a game, it's just not much like the release patched game (let alone the game now). But that's an extreme example.

Yeah, I did over-egg my point a bit. But I think it's far to say that most games have updates and add-ons now; there aren't many games that you buy and nothing is later amended.

For me, disc noise is also a factor. I'm a bit weird about noise and I dislike how noisy consoles are when they're playing a disc. But, then again, for PS4 and XBO is it just the first five minutes that you get the noise, as the game is then played off the hard drive?

The heat is affecting my thinking and I'm arguing with myself  .

The disc drives are actually very quiet, what you can hear is wasp buzzing

German news site golem.de has an interview online with Shawn Layden where he states that there will definitely be a new generation and not an evolutionary model like with smartphones.

He also stated that there will NEVER be a PS4 Pro exclusive.

I still think the generation model works as while progress may have slowed it's still at a point that by 2019 or 2020 the next gen will be a big step and even if the graphics cards are only a small step (lets say 20% better than Xbox X) the CPU will be a vast improvement as by then even laptop style CPU's will completely destroy those found in this gen.
Add that to the faster loading and RAM that Microsoft claims for Xbox X as standard on all new models (surely Sony will do something similar) and that should also show a generational benefit.
