I think the next gen may have quite a power gap between whoever goes first and second as it looks like new CPU tech is going to be popping up thick and fast over the next 4 years.
If we can get gen 2 Ryzen in a PS5 I think the result should be pretty spectacular but the real worry is can they get to a place where that CPU is cheap enough for inclusion.

Actually the pace CPU GHz per £ has been slowing for some time now and will continue to do so, hence diminishing returns and each generation being a year longer than the previous.

In more basic terms, Moor's Law is slowing down

The last time I bought a physical album was about 2 months ago, so yes

(The comparison isn't the same with regards to the competition part though, physical music is an open format)

Chicken/eggs problem there.

Expensive accessories like that need there to be a large install base, there were 50m PS4s in the wild before Sony released PSVR. I'd expect the same for PSVR2.

2019/2020 at the earliest for PS5 I think. We need to see how MS does with the Xbox One X before we can really predict much with that, but assuming it does alright, probably a year or so after the PS5.

My hope for Sony is that the existing PSVR will carry over to PS5. I love my VR right now and while I can see myself upgrading to a more advanced version in a few years time, I think they'd be mad to completely write off the existing PSVR install base with a PS5 that doesn't support it.

PSVR compatibility will be a given as it just uses the same output as the TV and one for the camera.
I expect Sony to change the camera for PSVR 2 but surely they would be bonkers if they didn't use the same plug type.
The hardware for PSVR is more than capable of working well with PS5 and just being pushed to its limits so an upgrade won't be essential but I expect the upgrade will offer higher resolution and fancier screen tech with HDR but unlikely to be 4K.
I would imagine PSVR games will be compatible with both versions even if they're PS5 only.

Providing they stick with x86 architecture then backwards compatibility won't be an issue.

I'm hoping PSVR 2 using inside-out tracking and ditches the camera, I want a Vive-like experience with VR on PS5.

So it looks like developers recently started receiving dev-kits, coupled with the lack of "next-gen" at last week's GDC and 2020 is looking a cert now.

Will they be digital only? With more retail closures and preowned sales on the decline, come 2020 I seriously doubt there will be any physical retail stores left so I see little point in wasting time and resources on disc based hardware.

Depends how much an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive costs, there could be disc-less SKUs.

There are too many people with slow connections who rely on disc-based games, this isn't going away any time soon.

Hearing it was fine.

Feeling it on the back of my leg was going too far.

What else am I going to do with it?
If you've got a better idea I'm all ears.

By the feel of that vile member on my legs, I don't think you are all ears.

Looks like Microsoft are going with GDDR6 RAM for "Xbox Two"

https://careers.microsoft.com/us/en/job ... -Lead-XBOX

We are seeking a qualified candidate for a Senior Engineer to lead the DRAM solutions for the Xbox console hardware development team. DRAM solutions include DDR3, GDDR5, GDDR6 and future DRAM technologies. The successful candidate will be the primary technical focal point for existing and leading-edge memory technologies on currently shipping and future Xbox design projects.

The trouble the 9th console generation will have is that it's not going to be offering anything truly different from the previous generation. It'll do 4K/60pfs gaming, but we can have that now with Pro and X. The previous generational jumps were all far more obvious in what you were getting (at least before the last one) - 8bit to 16bit (3rd to 4th generation), 2D to basic 3D (4th to 5th), basic 3D to higher fidelity 3D (5th to 6th), jump to HD 1080p gaming (6th to 7th), jump to a bit nicer HD 1080p/4K gaming (7th to 8th)....then what? More of the same, just a bit shinier and faster?

They should hold off the 9th generation for as long as they can, so that when it does finally arrive people will have their socks blown off. I don't want to shell out for a PS5 and find out it's just an upgraded Pro.
