Considering the platform it was running on, it was an incredible achivement.

As an Amiga owner I was makin' do with Alien Breed 3D and Gloom, with the likes of Doom itself reserved to school PC's

Still doesn't excuse the fact it was terrible. Perhaps they shouldn't have bothered?

SNES was still a popular platform of the day. £60 for a mediocre port version versus hundreds of quids for the game on any of the "next gen" platforms 95% of which were - lets be honest - almost equally badly mutilated in one way or another.

Yeah, I can see why they made it, and frankly, I played and enjoyed less accurate doom-clones.

I mean, honestly. It doesn't look THAT bad. A little chunky, a little less smooth maybe.

Lego Doom. Lego strawberry-floatin' Doom! Awesome :D .

It's not *really* being manufactured, but it is a terrific 'what-if'.

That's awesome.

The oppressed are allowed once every few years to decide which particular representatives of the oppressing class are to represent and repress them in parliament.

Building on the chat in the Switch thread, it seems that Doom, Doom II and Doom 3 are shortly to launch on current gen consoles :toot: .

The games briefly appeared in the eShop before disappearing, and now they're listed on the PS Store. QuakeCon is taking place so I wonder if a formal announcement will soon be made?

It's great to see these classic titles return :-) .

Apparently you need a Bethesda account in order to initialise the Doom games on PS4, XBO and Switch; although it seems you only have to do this once and you can then play offline if preferred.

I really want to get these but am unsure about going for either the Switch or PS4 versions... I'd like the portable aspect but I want to see / hear how they play!

Edit: Doom is £3.99, Doom II is £3.99 and Doom 3 is £7.99.

Any reason to get them if you have them for the 360 and they are Backwards compatible on the Xbox One?

Possibly not unless you're a massively keen Doom fan, Pedz, although Doom 1 includes Episode IV: Thy Flesh Consumed expansion, Doom 2 includes the Master Levels expansion and Doom 3 includes the Resurrection of Evil and Lost Missions expansions.

I wish they’d re-release Doom 64 as that’s the one I haven’t played. I presume they don’t have the rights as it was developed and published by Midway.

Yeah, it'd be nice to see that appear on modern formats. I've played it a little bit and it's great; unique levels in the classic style of the first two titles. The game was *extremely* dark on the N64, though, and I'd hope that things were a little clearer in a newer version!

Not only is OG Doom & Doom II £3.99, they’ve actually made an effort with the trophy list by putting a platinum aswell.

jawafour wrote:Lots of good memories being shared here :-). Yeah, the 32X version was decent - some levels were indeed missing, but it was probably the best available non-PC version at the time. Also, I agree - the GBA version(s) were really cool if a tad pixelly!

Unbelievably, I've never played Doom online (or local link)... a travesty when the game was built around that! I'm surprised that none of the GRcade PC crew have commented yet... maybe I'm showing my age. I've read stories of folk who were seriously into multiplayer Doom... *really* into it. Some fans still design additional levels for the game today - through the infamous ".wad" files, I believe. The DoomWorld website is a great Doom resource and contains some neat historical info too.

I'm more of a casual console player but, even so, I have a huge respect for the game.

I think John Carmack actually requested that only certain parts of the Saturn be used for the Doom. A lot of people blame him for it being so bad.

Programmer Jim Bagley, upon receiving the resources from id Software, was able to create a hardware-accelerated renderer for the platform in a relatively short amount of time. However, upon review by John Carmack, this rendering engine was found unacceptable due to the hardware's quad-based affine texture scaling. Carmack demanded that the hardware graphics capabilities be avoided, forcing Bagley to undertake writing a software renderer which utilized both SH2 processor units in the system, under coordination of the central 68000 chip, to draw the screen in a manner similar to the PC game engine.

Awesome, £7.98 will be on its way to Bethesda so I can play these whilst sat on the bog. :datass:

Do they have local and online multiplayer options? (Doom that is, not the bog!)
