Ignore this and play Brutal Doom instead!

Pretty sure I heard Danbo having an aneurysm reading that from all the way down in England.

Without Googling it to check, I believe that Doom on PC was indeed released as Shareware initially - I think you got a few levels for free and then paid to own the full game. I enjoy that folk remember how much the soundtrack and effects add to the game... that PSX soundtrack is scarier than I remembered, and the shotgun sound seems more atmospheric than most gun games made since then.

I feel that a big part of Doom's success is the quality of the maps. There's so many different paths and rooms and it is great to explore them and discover switches and hidden secrets. Ths still feels good when played today; Doom's design from levels through graphics, sound and controls is just so slick. I'd only scraped the surface on previous plays but it's time to get back into it.

PSX :dread: it's PLAYSTATION dammit!

Shareware was the whole first episode free :datass:

They did the same with quake.

I think its maybe the only game that is just as good now as it was when I first played in 93/94.

Doesnt ever get old. Might buy it again on the ipad, bit surprised it hasnt popped up cheap or free like Wolf 3D did.

Get tae strawberry float.

That thing was released basically nowhere and bought by nobody.

Virtually the whole world owned a PSX.

Except it's not called 'PSX', that was just a codename. It's as ridiculous as still calling PS4 'Orbis'

I'm sure that was simply down to his advancing years. Old age is so very cruel.

The difference being that Orbis was a term that was never used. The original Playstation was widely abbreviated PSX among real world people for about six years (because like other consoles available at the time it was possible to abbreviate it down to 3 characters. PSX, SAT, N64, 3D0, CDi, Jag, etc)

It's hardly worth supplanting that historical reasoning because Sony decided to make, distribute and not be able to sell a bunch of PS2's with a built in hard drive

I’ve got fond memories of playing Doom on the PC in the mid-90s.

Used to love the shotgun, and the music was damn good. Must have been about 10 when I first played it, and the daemons used to scare the gooseberry fool out of me. That scratching noise. :dread:

Great game.

That room that you walk into and it's full of hell knights and a cyber demon. Just go back out and listen to the carnage inside. :datass:
Back in and finish off the survivor.

I'm trying to get a co-op Zandronum server set up on grcade.

It's a port of Doom with some modern touches and game modes. Free if you own Doom 2.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Own this game on so many formats,

PC
GBA
Sega Saturn
Playstation
N64
Atari Jaguar
Snes
3DO
Megadrive 32X

Jaguar is the most faithful console version as id did it themselves.
