Yeah I'm sick of jokes like this, thoroughly witless and punching down on marginalized groups. Got people who I otherwise like in social circles who say similar rubbish, one the other day with the '''zinger''' "Umm excuse me Nintendo you have no octolings at this Splatoon tournament, I consider that RACIST" :fp:

I've seen some people argue that it's satire on corporations inappropriately coopting progressive rhetoric for selfish reasons, which I'd like to think it is...but even then you know lots will laugh with it at the expense of identity politics.

Unpleasantness aside, Doom 1-2* and 2016 are my favourite FPSes ever and I cannot wait for this <3 And yes that Mario Odyssey mashup

As the latter, i could appreciate Doom 3 a lot more than people who only knew the PC version, at least, thats my take on it.

hey hey hey as an avid fan of PC Doom 1&2 plus their modding scenes i think this is totally unfair
the people youre pejoratively referring to are actually the people who download Brutal Doom and the "metul" mp3 soundtracks and mod it in. actual OG Doom fans appreciate the subtle moments of Doom just as much as the fast-paced highs.
check out this demo of one of the best levels of the PWAD (custom mapsets) Sunlust for an example ;)

Oh wow. I did not know this existed and yeah, I can definitely see the thematic link between this and Doom 3. Spooky as strawberry float.

I mean

PSX version

vs

Classic PC version

I can't really disagree with anything else you've said re: D3 though. Well, not entirely. I wasn't as taken with the enemy designs as you were, the Imp in-particular is generic as strawberry float, but you're right about the depiction of Hell; it was downright boring in 2016. Still, that's one of the improvements Eternal seems to have made: the Hell elements look far more organic and interesting.

EDIT: As an aside, DOOM on PC was still scary as strawberry float. Some of the tracks were spoopy as, too.

Is it wrong I hope Cal keeps posting in here? His policy of not responding to any criticism makes it incredibly rewarding to take the piss out of his archaic, fascistic viewpoints.

Aaaaanyway...

I really hope they double down on the demonic side of things. I want them to really explore the idea of Hell being this other dimension and how it's just pure chaos and pain, but also of pure freedom where the darkest sides of people come out and dominate, a bit like Event Horizon (well, a lot like Event Horizon). I'd also like them to go down the Hellraiser route of humans being tempted into this almost sexual attraction to pure evil and insanity.

I find that kind of stuff really interesting :shifty:

Jesus christ how horrifying

But yeah as someone who had only ever heard the PSX soundtrack, i was always kinda baffled by people calling Doom a high octance, heavy metal blaster. Like i always thought of the game as a slow paced horror title. Just shows the difference music can make. Theres one track from the PSX that has crying babies on it and i remember in 1998 thinking it was strawberry floating terrifying.

That might get in the way of ripping and tearing huge guts tho (not that i disagree tho, id love to see more gooseberry fool like that in their representation of Hell). I didnt like how they handled Hell in Doom 2016, like it was the UAC found hell and just used it as an energy source? Thats lame as gooseberry fool.

See, I strawberry floating loved that. That completely blasé attitude just made the whole thing so much better. 2016 has an attitude that's rare in games; we know why you're here, you know why you're here, let's do this. Everything else is superfluous. The plot, the minamlist storytelling, even Doomguy's actions are all "let's get back to the killing." The pure ridiculousness of Earth relying on a literal Hell to keep it going (over, you know, sustainable energy) ramps the sinister nature of UAC up to the next level in keeping with the rest of the game.

Same here, this was one of the strongest and most refreshing aspects of the game.

"Demonic Invasion In Progress" strawberry float yeah!

I agree.
Not every game needs a story or even a reason to exist other than it's fun.
Does Wolfenstien really need an explanation other than "There's some Nazi's doing bad things, let's kick the gooseberry fool out of them until they stop!" as I'm fairly sure that's enough for most people.

+1 for what Taf said.

The no nonsense “this is the story, who cares why, here’s a shotgun, off you go” approach to Doom 2016 is one of the reasons I had so much fun playing it. Not every game needs a layer of intelligence to justify itself.

To be fair there is a layer of intelligence in just how well Doom 2016 recognises this in itself!

Exactly! There's a lot of thought in 2016's thoughtlessness, a lot of cleverness behind its stupidity. Even reading the codex entries reveals that there's a ton of backstory and lore stuff, but it's hidden away for people with an interest in that sort of thing (which of course, I am).

My worry for Eternal is that this clever stupidity will be lost and replaced with capital-L Lore and capital-P Plot.

EDIT: This is a great watch, and explains the process they went through to get the unique attitude of 2016.

Im not advocating for more story in Doom, it had just the right amount, im just saying having Hell be used as nothing more than a source of energy for humans is a bit wack. But yeah i do worry that they're going to dive into the deep end of LORE EVERYWHERE in D:E. Ive seen way too many games i absolutely adored gooseberry fool the bed with their sequels, Darksiders 2 and Evil Within 2 spring to mind immediately.
