I've just brought my DC out of the closet (oo-err) after absolutely ages. Admittedly, it has been through accident rather than design, as the only two consoles I currently have with me are this and the Mega Drive.

I never bought the console during its lifetime, as I picked it up in 2006. Even then, I've never really given it the time it deserved. It's just so... odd, playing a console after it's already been and gone. It's just a totally weird feeling. It's the only console I have ever picked up years after it stopped being sold and passed out of " normal" gaming memory and into "retro" nostalgia.

Obviously, I don't have that nostalgia though, as a Sega/Sonic fan and as a fan of those hazy late-90s/early-2000s, the machine still stikes a chord. It also helps that I've played a few DC ports in my day (most notably on the GC).

Anyway, I've set it all up. On my HDTV through the RF connection. It doesn't look great, though it's still playable. The main drawback is that the colours are just so dull - even Sonic Adventure looks jaded. JSR is the best, as it's just so bright and colourful on its own.

So I should get a VGA or Scart cable then? I don't want to spend too much, mind, as the last time I had the console out was about four years ago. I would like to play Shenmue I and II properly though, and I just can't do that on the RF as it would put me off.

Saying that, I played my N64 through the RF for all its life - I wasn't an informed gamer then. Heck, I didn't switch my GC over to scart til some point in late 2003/2004. I am an idiot, clearly.

Anyway, these are the games I have:

Sonic Adventure
Shenmue
Shenmue II
Soul Calibur
Power Stone
Chu Chu Rocket
Jet Set Radio
Shadowman (I loved the N64 version, and this looks better, so I bought it again)
MDK 2

Any other recommendations? I did have MSR and Phantasy Star Online, but foolishly traded them in during a purge a few years back, thinking they would actually fetch something. :fp:

Get a VGA Cable, it really does breathe life into the games!

Off the top of my head, the Crazy Taxi games and Headhunter are worth getting. Also Power Stone 2, once you're finished with the first, of course. Cosmic Smash is great but it was only released in Japan. There are ways of getting around that. :shifty:

Essential for anyone with an LCD TV.

You have to play both games at least once in your life, play them in the summer or wait until Christmas time!

Been trying out loads of Dreamcast homebrew stuff, like the original Quake and some Half-Life Mods. It's amazing what people are able to do with the console, and there's still stuff in production. Also need to play some Propeller Arena again.

Anyone else played any of the homebrew stuff?

Although the second one is a better game, playing the first Shenmue at Christmas is one of my all time favourite gaming experiences.

There are various sites around the web. A couple of links for places to check out:

http://www.dcisozone.com/dreamcast-isos.html
http://snesorama.us/board/forumdisplay.php?f=24

There are still mods/games in development, like this one that I'm looking forward to. Based on the Blood games (which are amazing). Looks to be a proper old-school FPS :D.

Just hoping that it's released on XBLA/PSN by Christmas (if it is coming out).

I've completed it about 10 times now but it's one of the few games that everyone MUST play, I even lent my Dreamcast to all my friends (and ex girlfriends ).

I bought a dreamcast around 6 months ago with jet set radio from a car boot. Ive never played it as it came with an rf cable and I couldn't get it to work!

But ive just bit the bullet and bought and official scart cable off eBay ( couldn't afford a VGA)

Looking forward to my first dreamcast experience in a few days!

You got stuck on the bit where you have to challenge those 3 guys to fights to get the prize money didn't you.

Well I would not say I got stuck, I just did not have the time to waste to get to a certain point. I may get back to it one day, maybe later on in the year. I think I will complete it in the run up to Christmas Day! 8-)

Fanatastic Chris, you are going to love it. Make sure you take your time and speak to every NPC in the game. By the end you will be ready for the second game!

Yeah, Shenmue's one of those games you need to get immersed in and experience. Trying to complete it as quickly as possible can spoil it.

And theres no point rushing it as the third title is pretty much never going to come out, so enjoy what Sega have done.
