Does anyone know where i can get one at a reasonable price? I have had a look on ebay and they are going for ridiculous prices. Also, what is the difference between the cable and the box?

I got one off ebay and it was a GAME branded one I think. It seems to work perfectly on my Samsung 26 inch, but on the 19 inch it did not seem to produce a picture, I am not sure whether its to do with the TV not accepting 480p through VGA?

Anyway if you love the Dreamcast that Official VGA Cable is worth it mainly because it is so rare. Playing the games through VGA now compared to the RF input that I used when I first bought the machine is liking comparing night to day, its just so amazing how sharp and clear the image is through VGA and makes those special games even more magical.

I really, really need to get one. But, £60 is just ridiculous, I can't justify that, not in a bloody recession!!!

I agree, keep checking on ebay daily for the black square GAME or unbranded VGA Box that comes with av inputs on one side and a vga input on the other (to switch between the two). Do not pay more than £25, I think I paid around £20 when I bought it, but it was second hand. One problem I have is that if I connect it to a DELL PC monitor thick feint lines run down the screen, but on my samsung 26 inch it is perfect!

If my 360 was not connected via VGA I would have my Dreamcast out now, I may take it out for the weekend, I think a few hours on crazy taxi and sonic adventure would do me well. Come to think of it theres one game I still have no rebought, thats sonic adventure 2. I sold quite a few of my dreamcast games at one time, probably to fund purchasing some ps2 games, but I cannot remember and sonic adventure 2 was one I sold and never completed, mind you I never completed the first one either, so I must definately do that. I may even get the gamecube versions for easy accessibility on the Wii!

Anyway good luck with your search, its definately worth getting a VGA cable, your Dreamcast deserves it!

Mine turned up today.

WOW

I can't believe how much better it looks, on my 26" 720p TV the difference between VGA and RGB Scart is staggering. It easily compares to the Wii now and playing Shenmue, you could almost pass it off as a 360 title.. almost.. maybe.

Using Scart, my USA Daytona 2001 had a really weird blurry effect on the other cars but on VGA it's crystal clear and looks great again.

Only thing, on my TV in 4:3 mode the width looks slightly less than it should be like it's squashed slightly (only a little) and in 16:9 obviously everything is stretched - is that usual on HD tv's on DC or just mine? It's not a major problem but a slight annoyance. In Scart mode I have a 14:9 option which I reckon would make this look about right but for some reason I can't select it when using VGa.

What would I need to hook up 2 VGA cables to one monitor? I recently bought the VGA cable for the Xbox 360. The problem is that my computer is already hooked up with a VGA cable, and my VGA to DVI adapter doesnt fit into the monitor. Is there any way to get a VGA splitter and switch between the two? If so, how would I choose which signal my monitor is to receive?

The cables are a lot cheaper on eBay than the boxes, but is there a difference in quality?

I'm assuming (I don't know for sure) that the one with the box would also do some scaling. Nub on the side suggests optical out as well.

I have the cable version, it's run from the Dreamcast to a VGA and Phono to HDMI converter (TV doesn't have VGA) and looks amazing. Honestly I have no idea what difference it makes but the cheap cable version works fine.

The boxes usually have a switch to go between VGA and S-Video, other than that there shouldn't be any difference so quality should be the same.

There is not much difference, first it's important to know what's going on though:

The DC natively outputs RGB and VGA, these cables just take the right pinouts and then run it through a little circuitry that's required to buffer the RGB signal and extract and isolate the audio signals.

The cable has the circuitry IN the cable, so yeah it looks nice and clean but be a bit weary when chucking it around.

The box has this circuitry in (you guessed it) the box, but most good units have a little op-amp for the audio too to boost the sound a bit since it's a pretty low audio signal without.

I actually made a chip myself and soldered to the right pins on the motherboard, then installed a VGA and minijack port on the DC (hardest bit) - the difference is huge, and £60 is a rip off. I have a spare DC, i can do the job again for the right price if someone wants, you can find a DC with the setup i described for about £70-90 on ebay if you want.
