Wasn't sure whether we had a topic dedicate to boardgames and card games, or even if many people here play them, so here we are...

After much waiting, I finally got a pretty interesting card/board/mobile hybrid type game for Christmas.

Let me introduce to you...

Image

What is Dropmix?
Dropmix is a dynamic and fast paced music mixing game from Hasbro and Harmonix (Rock Band, Guitar Hero, Dance Central). Players blend popular songs from award winning artists to create mind blowing mixes. Get together and face off with friends to master the mix.

Cool! What do I need?
To get started you'll need the card reader board. This connects to your iOS/Android device via Bluetooth. The board comes with 60 cards to get you started which make up 4 unique decks (Sweets - a Pop deck, Highness - a Hip-hop deck, Blade - a Rock deck, Controller - an Electronic deck)

Image

Game Modes
  • Clash - two teams of either one or two players prepare card hands. Taking turns, each player plays a card by color as instructed by the app, but may only play a card of greater power than one already present (if such is the case). If they can, they earn points; if they are unable to, they hit a button on the game board which has the app determine cards to be removed from the game board to keep the game going.
  • Party - one to five players split the available cards between them, and taking turns, must try to respond to specific "requests" provided by the app in the fastest time, with score penalties if they play incorrectly.
  • Freestyle - lets players simply try to combine the cards in various mixes without any other rules or scoring goals

Customise
You can buy new cards to customise your deck of 15/30 cards. Full list in this reddit spreadsheet

I've only had a chance to play with the base game so far and the 60 cards that come with it. It's a lot of fun when you get your head around the rules, and it's also pretty fun to just throw cards down to see how they sound together (the game does a really good job of beat matching and everything for you so it's pretty difficult, maybe impossible for it to sound bad)

I got the Astro (Electronic) playlist pack last Wednesday which I still haven't had a change to open. It comes with the 15 cards that make up the Astro deck and a mystery card from the eight mystery cards available.

  • Ludwig Van Beethoven - 5th Symphony
  • Harmonix Music - Doctor Who Theme
  • Harmonix Music - Baker Street
  • LEN - Steal My Sunshine
  • Connecticut River Boys - Didgeridoo Stomp
  • Harmonix Music - Wipe Out
  • Davis Franklin - Beat Boxer
  • J.S. Bach - Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major

I spent over £100 on the Base game and it's currently in a sale over on Amazon US for 50% :fp: So you can actually import the game from Amazon US cheaper than you can buy the base game in the UK

I really want it, but its too dear I think. Price will cause it to fail and support to end.

I'm not sure how it compares to other card games, does seem kind of expensive but if anything is going to kill it, it will be the supply and marketing (Harmonix only seem to partner with people who don't advertise or supply their product :slol: )

The base game with 60 cards is about £110 here I think. It was about £50 if you imported it from Amazon America when I check this week though so better to do it that way.

The "Playlist" packs vary from £11 onwards. The RRP is £14.99 I think. That gives you a complete themed deck of 15 cards and a random card from 8.
"Discover" packs have an RRP of 4.99 and contain 5 cards, however they're not actually random despite Amazon etc selling them as such. There's 2 "Series" which have 6 packs each. So for example those 12 packs of 5 give you 60 cards which make up 4 unique themed Playlist Decks.

You can mix and match the cards from each deck, so you don't have to have a complete deck in one theme to play.

It seemed a bit overwhelming at first but none of the cards are random except those 8 in the OP. Originally I thought it was a case of spending £££'s until you found the card you wanted.

Managed to snag the base game from Game for 39.99 - out of stock online but some stores still have stock. The add on packs are all 2.99 each too. Looks like a sign support may be dropping off, in the UK anyway but figured at that price should be fun even if no more new stuff comes out for it.

Looking forward to giving it a try.

Nice one! I've been using Amazon US to get the cards not released outside of America. I have all but two playlists now (Bomb - Toys R Us exclusive which resellers are selling for $40 :dread:, and the Diamond playlist which is also expensive :( )

They've announced a "Season 2" for this year so the game isn't dead, but as we have only had about half of the first set of cards officially release in the UK I'm not sure what the games status is here.

I still haven't had a chance to play it much yet  it took about 2 hours to open all the packs up (the packaging is beautiful... but awful) and I've been sleeving each card too to stop the electronic chips inside from scratching the cards.

Yeah I've read US import may be the way to go for more cards but isn't cheap. Sounds like GAME is dropping support due to poor sales hence the cheap prices to clear stock. From what I've read amazon and maplins were the only two other stockists over here so with maplin gone looks like it's just Amazon now.

Tip for GAME - Google the pack you want with GAME UK in the search and the result will take you straight to the page for it and say out of stock but you can then check stock in local stores and reserve if you find any. If you type dropmix on the site itself nothing comes up.

What's the tech in the cards? Can you write in info on to blank cards, like I've seen with Amiibos?

Just managed to bag the game and all four expansions at my local GAME - pretty chuffed as always had my eye on it and wanted to bite when the price dropped.

Amazon appear to sell the individual packs from S1 and S2 as lucky dips, but would rather snaffle the complete bundles if possible - something for my next US trip perhaps?

Amazon US do packs containing the full set for about $25 plus postage to the UK which doesn't seem to bad. Might order some after payday.

I'd reserved the game and all four expansions at my local store originally then next day got a message saying the game itself was out of stock. My parents local store had it though so they picked one up for me with the pop and R&B expansions. I have the rock one re-reserved at local store and hoping they still have the electronic pack reserved for me from the other day (I didn't pick them up as wanted to make sure got the game OK first). Gonna pop down tomorrow and hopefully get them both.

Been playing this quite a lot with the wife, we both love it. Also been messing round in the freestyle mode, uploaded a few mixes to YouTube, can see them on the link below if anyone's interested. The last one is by my other half.

Some really cool mixes!! :toot:

Looks like Season 2 will have 4 playlists unless Harmonix have only revealed the logos for 4 of them

Should be getting some news on them soon.

I really want that Transformers card but apparently they give it out at conventions etc.. you can't buy it. Ebay has it for silly prices.

The others in there look great though, bottom right in particular :datass:

Waiting for amazon US to deliver some more cards, one lot should be coming today (bomb set) then the remaining ones next few days.. only ones i'll be missing then from season 1 is the discover series 3 and 4 sets which seem to be stupidly hard to find compared to the rest.

Then start again on season 2 I guess.. can see this getting pricey, I know my OCD will want to get them all :fp:

EDIT: Just noticed, I reckon some of those cards from the amazon pic may be fake/mockups - if you look in the bottom left, the season/card numbers don't look right - if they're season 2, they should say "S02 Cxxx" if they follow the same pattern as the original seasons cards (S01 Cxxx) - these seems standard across all the cards regardless of their set. If you check the first card on there it says "S69".. also the Ludacris one says it's card 1/20 from the mirrors pack, there's only 15 cards in that pack and card 1 is Ginuwine - Pony. Hope some of them do make it into season 2 though but probably take it with a pinch of salt for now.

ah damn they are mock up cards :x :(

Also the full set of series 3 were apparently up on Amazon US earlier. How much was the Bomb playlist?! That's one of the two sets I need but it's 40$ from resellers on Amazon and with import duty and postage on top it's about 2-3 times what it should cost in ripoff Britain prices

Was something silly like 37$ plus postage. Went for it as with being toys r us exclusive thought they might slowly vanish now its closed down.

Don't get why series 3 and 4 are so hard to find when the other sets all seem readily available. Saw 3 in stock on hasbro but then found they won't ship to UK :fp:

I think it's partly because series 3 and 4 have only been released in North America so far and because that's created a demand there are a lot of scalpers buying to sell :slol: I imported two lots of each over and sold the second of each set to cover my cards

It is a little annoying how little support they've given it in the UK - there's no official shop like in the US, some cards haven't even released here and pretty much only Amazon stocks it now as GAME appear to have dropped it and Maplins shut down. Hopefully with Season 2 they'll give it a new bigger push over here as well as the US. I think if they could get the RRP for the game itself down, maybe even bundle it with the whole of season 1 or something.. I think like £69.99 for the board and season 1 nearer xmas with a bit of a marketing push it could do really well.

I did think they could also use the tech from dropmix to make some interesting console stuff. Maybe a karting or wipeout style racing game where the powerup pads generate part of the song (like placing a card in dropmix). You have to build up more of your song by crossing as many pads as you can which builds your score, your rival does the same stealing bits back from you and whoever scores the most wins.. get your whole song playing for a bonus. Stuff like that.. or a catpure the flag style FPS but you capture areas that generate the beats of your teams song in the same way.

It's a shame actually the dropmix board can't talk to consoles, might've got more attention if it had the option of pairing with a PS4 or Xbox (as well as phone for none console players) and putting the visualisations on the TV.
