DSI XL - In game Wi Fi Functions

I have to connect to Wifi using the advanced settings, which seems to mean I cant access in game functions such as multiplayer

Is there no way around this at all?

XL uses WPA, games use WEP. You'll have to either change your router's security settings to WEP, or buy the official Nintendo USB Wi-Fi dongle.

You're not the only person with this problem, trust me Blame Nintendo's backwards attitude to online.
