PostDSi XL - Out Now. £135 - Asda.
by Hugo Stiglitz » Thu Jan 14, 2010 7:54 am

Nintendo has announced that DSi XL will be released in the UK on 5 March 2010. The console will be available in two colours - wine red and dark brown - and will come pre-loaded with the DSiWare software Dr Kawashima's: Little Bit of Brain Training: Arts Edition, Dictionary 6 in 1 with Camera Function and Flipnote Studio, as well as the Nintendo DSi Browser.

DSi XL is the fourth edition of Nintendo's DS handheld console and, as you can see from the image to the left, owners will benefit from playing on the two 4.2 inch screens which are 93% larger than those on a DS Lite. The screens also have an improved wider viewing angle so your family and friends will be able to watch you play games easily.

The console comes with a new larger pen-like stylus in addition to the standard stylus. According to Nintendo, this new stylus has been designed to make 'extended stylus gameplay more comfortable to allow better control.'

DSi XL will have the same capabilities as the DSi, meaning you'll be able to download games from the DSi shop, take photos with the in-built cameras before customising them and sharing them online, and listen to and mess around with your music files.

Nintendo has yet to confirm how much DSi XL will cost but back in October 2009, we were told that the retail price is expected to be higher than that of the DSi.

Christ that is quite a bit bigger, still bloody pointless though. How many games actually use the camera? When I eventually take the DS plunge I will be going for a Lite. No point in paying £40 extra for a camera.

What? Do you like paying £40 for useless cameras?

You'll miss out on lots of good DSiWare software. I would get the DSi normal edition if you get one.

So they increase the size of the screens, but keep the buttons the same size as before? :fp: I guess I'll have to wait for the DSi XLi - with larger screen and decent sized buttons.

Ah yes, if the DSlite could get DSiWare was going to be my next question. Although a bigger screen would be nice who would really use it? The Rednapp Family?

I think I can comfortably skip this iteration.

Unless battery-life is significantly improved over the regular DSi...

I'm not there with a stop-watch, but it seems a bit lower than the DS lite.

Using the browser quite a bit doesn't really seem to help.

Having yet to upgrade to a DSi, the DSi XL will be lost on me... unless I buy for each for my parents who still use my old Japanese Tonka Toy DS :P

I like paying £40 in order to get access to the best piece of software Nintendo has released this generation, as well as a fun camera that my son loves and gets plenty of use out of, and some cool Art Style games and Q-Games' recent handheld output. And the Art Academy apps. And a matte finish that doesn't attract fingerprints. And a better d-pad.

Anyway, if you've got a Lite, this is the perfect time to upgrade. Keep your Lite for when you're on the move, and get the XL for using at home. It's not particularly portable, but the screens...oh man, the screens...

The resolution of the games is the same though so to the games appear slightly more pixelated right? Not that I'd notice I'm blind as a bat regardless

Maybe I'm odd but the tiny size of the DS has always been its weakest feature for me so I may just get this as I have RPGs I just don't like playing as the writing is so tiny.

I remember when the Game Boy and the Game Gear were considered portable. How times change :(

I was going to buy a DSi soon. I would wait and buy one of these, but the colours look a bit gooseberry fool.

Indeed, I'm going to get a sexy red DSi to replace my Guinness stained white DSLite.

Bigger screens and sophisticated colours, aimed at over 60s?
