Can't afford DN3D, so will just have to make do with the demo.

Nope. My favourite Live game is Doom, and that's almost entirely because of the co-op.

And even then, you can't get the achievements in offline co-op. AFAIK, anyway.

IGN Review

clicky

8.5

Duke Nukem 3D is yet another classic release that makes a wonderful conversion onto Xbox Live Arcade. Some might be put off by its convoluted, old school level design and predictably unattractive appearance but there’s no doubt that it’s one of the fathers of the most popular genre in our industry. Toss in the new age additions like online co-op and a replay editor and most will find this to be more than a simple trip down memory lane.

Well, it's an entertaining diversion, but it certainly isn't the Second Coming. Good fun, but inferior to Doom in almost every way. I'll pass.

Playing it just now. The ability to rewind and chose where to restart from when you die is a nice touch.

I didn't think so. It's probably the comedy angle as opposed to being scary. Doom is all about the atmosphere, and it still has the power to scare even now. Duke just looks a bit dated. I don't want to be too hard on it, like I said it's entertaining enough. I didn't try online which will no doubt be a riot. It just didn't live up to the hype that was building on here.

To be fair, you probably needed to play it 13 years ago, when it was new. Back then, it really was a 'step up'. The weapons, the fact that you had a pseudo 3d type effect, the scripted bits! Back then it was the dogs.

Oh and the multiplayer still has the best weapon ever. Namely, the shrink gun. Shrinking your mate and then running after him, trying to stamp on him is fudging ace!

Eh?

There might have been a couple of scares to be had when it was first released, but you're fooling yourself if you think it's still able to scare anyone.

Also, Duke isn't really going for the same kind of look/feel as Doom, it's more about having a few laughs while beating down/killing alien scum.

As for Duke looking dated, it looks no better/worse than Doom... :?

Some seriously silly reasoning there, Heaty. :|

Anyway, I love it.

It's just as good as Doom (Live Arcade) if not better, playing through the first level again brought back so many memories...I instantly remembered where all the key cards were, where the guns were, etc.

Multiplayer is pretty good as well, only had one match so far...found it a little too chaotic especially when everyone has the rocket launcher.

I don't know that I'd totally agree with Heaty on this, but the atmosphere of Doom remains intact. Stop looking, start listening, and most importantly, ramp the difficulty up to the highest level.

They're very different game experiences, and both still worth playing. Doom has incredible level design, and Duke has far better deathmatch and more interesting world design.

Doom still makes me jump to this day, even though I know the scares are coming. Doom 2 is even better in that respect, hopefully that'll be coming soon...ish.

I've played it on Nightmare, it's not scary or as atmospheric as it was when it was first released. (I didn't think it wasn't scary then either, but it seems some people scare very easily)

The 'scary atmosphere' that Doom may once have had is no longer there, no matter how high I put the volume or ramp up the difficulty. :?

That's why I said go up to the hardest difficulty level. Suddenly you have no idea what's coming again :)

But if you're jumping into that difficulty, you really do need to take a bud or two along, because it's really ridiculously difficult.

I disagree, they only ramp up the amount of damage an enemy takes & how many of them there in a level. (I haven't played it in a while though, so I might be wrong)

I find it bizarre that anyone could still think that Doom is scary. :?

Out of interest, did either of you find System Shock 2, Alien Resurrection (PS1) & AvP 1 &2 at all scary?

They also respawn, so you can never actually tell where they're coming from at any given moment, which is why it's perfect for co-op play.

AVP 1 was genuinely terrifying, but I never played the sequels.

Time has certainly dulled the once visceral graphical edge of Doom, but the game is still really quite satisfyingly "solid" in my head, and this helps the illusion along.

Coming face to face with a Pinky while low on ammo and hearing the flesh - YOUR flesh - tear and your bones pop... Doom still has it where it counts :)

Pretty much that exactly. Anyway, it's only my opinion. Reckon you were a bit quick to jump on my back there, Sarge.
