Sterling's passion for the series means he was always going to pick holes, particularly when the format has shifted to an open world experience. As with all the Warriors titles, which are Marmite, I prefer to make up my own mind.

I watched some of his video and just from that rather than his commentary, it looks like huge swathes of nothing punctuated by the occassional small fight with a lot of travelling between them. Eurogamer said:

as an open-world game, Dynasty Warriors 9 falls miserably flat, mistaking breadth for any kind of meaningful depth. You can take to your horse and ride from one end of the map to another in a feat that'll take up to two hours - although you'll have fallen asleep in the saddle well before then. It's a map with plenty of scope but not much by way of spectacle, or satisfying diversions. Yes you can hunt, gather resources for crafting or even purchase your own hideaway to decorate with trinkets - because, well, that's what other open-world games offer. Dynasty Warriors 9 too often feels like a pale imitator rather than having its own sense of purpose.

So there are watchtowers to climb and a map that's slowly filled in over the dozens of hours it takes to see through it all - and there's a lot to see through, with some 83 characters to tinker with throughout the campaign. Dynasty Warriors games aren't exactly new to excess, of course, but the endless list of side missions - none of which gets that much more advanced than going to a certain destination and dealing with a mob or two - and hollow distractions makes it all feel a lot more like bloat.

That doesn't sound like fun at all. I'll stick to dw8xlce and the like instead.

So they've created an open world and not put anything in it? They does actually sound a bit naff.

Warriors Orochi 4 is due to arrive later this year and it has been announced that it will feature 170 playable characters :o . Orochi 3 Ultimate gained a pretty good reception and I hope that this new title can by-pass the disappointment of Warriors 9 and build on this.

I still have Orochi 1-3, Gundam 3 and DW8XLCE kicking around, not to mention all the rest I can emulate, and given how bad dw9 was I'm giving this a wide berth until reviews hit.

Damn shame about DW9. I'll keep my eye on Warriors Orochi 4 however.

Warriors Orochi 4 is arriving in the UK on 19 October. In times past I would have jumped aboard at launch but I'm holding back on this to (a) see what reviews have to say and (b) discover if Koei has restored an English voice option. After Warriors 9, I have concerns about content being held back as DLC, too.

I was interested in how the Switch version would perform... going by this frame test, it's not too hot. It appears to have trouble hitting 30fps with the bulk of gameplay around the 27fps mark. I'm not usually one to get to hung up on technical performance but the fast-paced nature of Warriors needs a decent run rate.

It's amazing how, although Dynasty Warriors 9 received a pretty cold reception, interest in musou games has subsequently risen thanks to spin-off games such as Dragon Quest Warriors, Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors.

NintendoLife has taken a look at the franchise and it's worth a read.

I'm keen to see what Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires is like when it arrives early next year. I wonder if Koei Tecmo will have taken on-board the criticisms about DS9; and if they have polished the game as well as the more recent spin-off games?

They will do very little with it. Persona Scramble will be great though.

So many great games in the genre, fire emblem warrior, berserk, orochi 4 ultimate, pirate warriors 4, fate extella link, dragon quest heroes 2.

The second Fate extella game is actually amazing and looks lovely. Even on switch.

The genre is easily my favourite, very relaxing games to play and good value for money. I liked the attack on Titan games, well made and really fast. Also fist of the north star - lost paradise is less giant battles but more crazy.

Have you played the first for comparison? I had fun with it and played the first two routes but thought it was significantly worse than most actual Omega Force games. Is the sequel significantly better?

Yeah the first is one of the worst games I've played. Just dull rooms and little else. The sequel fixes all the problems and adds loads of great things. Worth watching some reviews on YouTube to see how it plays.

Also the characters are all very different compared to a standard dynasty warriors game.

If you can play it on PS4 as it's good on switch but it runs better on a more powerful system.

The game is out on 15 February and Eurogamer has chatted with one of the developer staff about the series. I'm kicking myself as I *still* haven't given my Warriors games a proper go and I do want to.

Almost a year later... put the needle on the rek'rd!

Still not started playing these but I have added a few more to my collection on PS4.

Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends
Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires
Dynasty Warriors 9
Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires
Samurai Warriors 4
Samurai Warriors 4 II
Samurai Warriors 4 Empires
Samurai Warriors 5
Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate
Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate
Berserk and the Band of the Hawk

Being mainly digital on PS4, these disc versions (all bar DW9 which is digital) make up the bulk of my physical collection!
