I swore that buying on launch was stupid before but that price is just too good and Sony have done everything right in regards to the console. It's actually insane value for money when you look at the kind of hardware this thing will be using. Sony most be losing a fortune on ever one that they sell.

I think they are basically breaking even. Sony used to take a loss on consoles and make the money on games, but the rest of the company is not as strong these days and so they probably want to reduce the risk and make profit from day one.

Geoff Keighly said he spoke to a source at Sony just before the MS conference and the Sony guy was worried MS would announce $399 as Sony would not be able to go any lower than that. So it's the cheapest they can afford to go, and presumably without losing money.

True. And I bet they knew MGS5 would in the MS conference (not least because they probably found out by asking Konami to be in theirs, and being told "no" and the reason why), and they'll know that everyone will see that and realise the PS4 is getting it too.

Pachter seems to think it's charring them about $325-350 to put together. Not bad.

Apparently it has an internal PSU. That is a little worrying; how do they fit all of that stuff in such a small box and not generate a horrendous amount of heat? I suppose that explains the strawberry floating huge grill at the back of the console.

Hope it's not too loud.

The size of the thing is utterly bizarre for what's in it, especially compared the the Xbox One.

Either the Xbox One is massively overdesigned for cooling or this thing is going to fail like mad.

Or one of the two companies is, like, an actual electronics company with decades of engineering experience.

Didn't really help them with the original PS3's though did it, to be fair.

Might be worth taking out cover in the long run, as an early adopter. Certainly something I'm thinking about, especially after both Microsoft and Sony had such problems with launch models this (or last, depending on your outlook) generation.

I think MS have basically taken no chances after the original 360 models. Also the clock speeds are a lot lower on these systems compared to last gen so I suppose that helps Sony.

I can't get my head around it either, unlike the Xbox One, PS4 doesn't even have a power brick.

When I looked at the size comparisons I was like 'What sorcery is this'? Considering the internals are pretty much the same you'd expect the consoles to be the same size too. Christ the PS4 even has a removable HDD, so you'd expect the loading mechanism to add space compared to their rival.

Sony are more experienced with these things and MS have also made a conscious choice in having a larger imposing box under the telly.

I honestly don't know how they've done it. You should see the size of the devkits  The bone is in exactly the same box.

Which didn't particularly help when it came to the PS3

Actually though you'd think when it comes to PC stuff MS might have the advantage.

If you think what is in an iMac and how Apple condenses it all into a ridiculously tiny space you can see how Sony have done pretty much the same thing with the PS4. I'd imagine Sony have done their homework otherwise they simply wouldn't release that design if it was inadequate.

The Xbox One is an ugly monstrosity in comparison. I don't understand why it's so bloody huge.

MS don't do hardware, it's that simple.

You only have to open up a 360 and a PS3 and the differences are obvious.

The fat PS3s heat sink is damn near pornographic.

The APU is a lot bigger, mainly due to the size of the low latency Esram which isn't bridged and not even a daughter die like 360, it's actually part of the chip. That needs cooling hence the bigger console.

I'm guessing the Xbox One is going to be silent. Which is pretty much essential if you're touting your box as a media box. PS4 will be noisier, but gamers don't mind as much. This is from someone who has still got his launch Xbox 360. That thing is strawberry floating noisy.
