How's that worked out for them lately?

Considering they are a toy company and are one of the biggest companies in Japan (they were the biggest briefly) I'd say pretty darn well.

Outside Japan, however, their dreams of market dominance have been thwarted by... themselves!

What's the market penetration of the Wii U like in Japan? I know it's poor globally, but did it do OK in that particular region? I was always under the impression that Nintendo were still pretty dominant in Japan.

It's only recently they've been particularly outward-looking - the time it took them to get stuff released through NOA and NOE was a farce in the early 2000s, even the official Nintendo magazine would complain - and I think Nintendo would still soldier on and find a way to make things work long after some hypothetical death in the West, as long as their Japanese audience was still solid.

All I really want is a release date for the new everybody's golf game. It's doing my head in all this waiting bull poop.

Wasn't Nintendo into doing sex hotel things before they made consoles?

Yep, 'Love Hotels' i.e. a place where you and the missus can go for some special alone time.

Only in Japan.

The Wii U has been a huge flop, but its hardly the Atari Jaguar. Its sold as many systems as the Master System and Game Gear, and few would call those systems outright flops, more second systems that never led the market. Its sold more than the Saturn and Dreamcast as well.

Its just the fall from grace that makes it seem worse than it is. After all it took Sega to have the Mega CD, 32X, Saturn AND Dreamcast failures their console business was finally sunk.

And this is why those predicting the imminent demise of Nintendo / a shift to software-only are barking up the wrong tree.

Don't know what to make of this year, no Nintendo, no EA conference but we do have R* coming. Going in with low expectations and hoping to come out surprised.

Isn't the EA conference simply at a separate location?

Surely a shift to software only would improve profits? If there was no Wii U, think of the massive userbase Nintendo could sell their games to on the PS4 and XBO. Nintendo need to think about where they are and where they are going.

Yes?

I don't really have any. Witcher 3: Blood & Wine and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided are the only upcoming games I'm looking forward to and they're both coming out soon enough that I don't care what their E3 presence is (B&W will probably be released before it anyway). I'm interested to get a proper first look at Mass Effect: Andromeda but that's it, I'd say Cyberpunk 2077 too but that's probably a long way from being shown.

The gaming market is a lot bigger now than it was during the Dreamcast era let alone the Saturn or Jaguar.

Not being funny, but the ea one is hardly worth waiting for!

I do think there will be a few surprises like rockstars new game and possibly a shenmue remaster. I also think shenmue 3 will be in playable form and that people will finally be able to play gran turismo sport.

I really feel microsoft will try harder this year and bring out some real surprises to get more fan support - i suspect a smaller machine and one or two big exclusives.

Mass Effect along with the Star Wars games from Respawn and Visceral are worth watching the EA event for. Oh and surely Criterion's new game must be ready to show.

The announcement of Respawn doing a Star Wars game, and the revelations that might be WH40K: Inquisitor, Dawn of War 3 and Space Hulk: Deathwing, ensures that I may be a happier than expected camper this E3.

Erm, aren't all hotels technically love hotels where married people can go to have sex?
Unless they have cameras set up in rooms and people who burst in to break it up at the first sign of hanky panky what's stopping people from sexing it up in any hotel?

I think the point is you can rent them by the hour instead of for the night.
