PostE3: Your Top Games (and Disappointments)
by Mockmaster » Fri Jun 18, 2010 5:02 pm

E3 has wrapped up now so it's time for some lists.

Top 5 games of the show:

1) Kirby's Epic Yarn - What a splendid surprise. KEY came out of nowhere to dazzle with it's woven art. I may actually end up buying a Kirby game for the first time in my life.
2) Donkey Kong Country Returns - Back where DK belongs (and Silhouette levels Oh Em Gee).
3) Rayman: Origins - Makes me want to take up poetry.
4) Child of Eden - Rez 2, holy gooseberry fool.
5) Marvel vs Capcom 3 - I'm hungry after SFIV and this whets my appetite.

Top Nintendo Thing: The 3DS, obviously.

Top Microsoft Thing: Metal Gear Solid: Rising. Hahaha no just kidding. Gears of War 3. Another blockbuster dose of what Gears does best, yes please.

Top Sony Thing: Kevin Butler. And Time Crisis: Razing Storm

Disappointments/Rants: Having waited 14 years for a new Pilotwings, the 3DS version appears to use the Wii Sports Resort style rather than harkening back to the N64 charisma. This felt like being told I was going to spend the night in a King Sized bed with a lust-filled Scarlett Johannson but then her turning into Sigourney Weaver at exactly the wrong moment. Zelda: Skyward Sword does not appear to be the big revamp that has been hinted at previously (despite those promises being gradually tempered) or that we've seen with the DS editions. I was hoping for a Zelda the likes of which we'd never seen before, and by that I don't mean steampunk. The strangely underwhelming trailer and subsequent gremlin-filled demo from the conference did not help. Lack of blow me away exclusives from either Sony or Microsoft. Where is this year's equivalent to Uncharted or Alan Wake?

To be honest its a bit early to say (I know its over), I'm sure theres quite a bit of stuff that was at E3 I haven't seen yet.

So far however I'd say Children of Eden, DKCR, Rock Band 3 and Epic Mickey would be contenders for best thing at E3.

Biggest disappointment would have to go by far to the lack of The Last Guardian at the show, utter disgrace.

Top 5 games of the show:

1) Metal Gear Solid: Rising - Absolutely love the style and slashing, number 1 in the hope this will be PS Move's saviour
2) Halo: Reach - Already played it, and it's great :D
3) PES 2011 - From what I've read and the demo show, PES is BACK!
4) Resident Evil Revelations - Looks absolutely stunning for a handheld
5) Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 3D - MGS3 on a handheld!

Top Nintendo Thing: 3DS looked nice

Top Microsoft Thing: New Xbox 360 model looked nice

Top Sony Thing: Gran Turismo 5 trailer looked nice

Disappointments/Rants:

Motion Control - What a crock of gooseberry fool it turned out the be. Not only were the games gooseberry fool party efforts, but neither the Move or Kinect have shown that they can do full 3D 1:1 without lag.

Progress - The lack of anything that progresses traditional gaming in terms of gameplay, graphics, sound, design, story or emotion. This E3 has reaffirmed views that games are for kids. I'll be saving ALOT of money over the next year.

PC gaming - Usually at this stage in a generation we begin to see PC games that show how the next-generation will look. Crysis 2 and RAGE were supposed to be this year's examples but looked completely uninspiring.

Top 5 games of the show:

1) Portal 2
2) Dead Space 2
3) Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
4) Donkey Kong Country Returns
5) Snake Eater 3DS

Top Nintendo Thing: The 3DS, New Zelda, Snake Eater on 3DS

Top Microsoft Thing: Gears 3,....eh....

Top Sony Thing: Twisted Metal looked decent, interested by Steam on system too.

Disappointments/Rants: Where the strawberry float was The Last Guardian? Where the strawberry float was a mention of new Half-Life? Far too much emphases from Microsoft and Sony on their motiony crap, and less about actual games!

Overall I felt, Nintendo aside (And let's be honest, it's about time they had some strawberry floating games anyway) this was one of the worst E3's. I just felt like I already knew half the "announcements" if you could call them that.

/Rant over

Sure I heard somewhere that Rising would have Motion control implemented.

EDIT - Quote was something like they are looking at including it.

Sure that as posted on here, if it has Move control and works then it'll really satisfy my blood lust.

Otherwise, meh

I'm not much of a fan of shooting games, so that cuts a lot of good stuff out of my list. That said, even though I dislike such games, I still feel optimistic about them, and wouldn't mind giving them a whirl.

Top 5 Games of the Show:

1) Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - just the relief of seeing something vibrant wins it this spot.
2) Golden Sun: Dark Dawn - I loved the first two games; this just feels close enough to get excited about now.
3) Paper Mario 3DS - Adore this series, and think it'll work wonderfully with the hand-held.
4) Ocarina of Time 3DS - I honestly could not believe it.
5) Disney Epic Mickey - This looks really solid and polished.

Top Nintendo Thing: The 3DS, and the fact that they actually put on a great show.

Top Microsoft Thing: Fable III - I do like the style they use for this series.

Top Sony Thing: Dead Space 2 - Things seem to be moving along nicely, with this one! It feels safe to get worked up over.

Disappointments

- No Last Guardian;
- No word of The Last Window;
- No word of Tales of Graces;
- I did kind of have my heart set on Star Fox being on the Wii;
- Zelda delayed, but that's the law.

Top Game.

Gears of War 3 - Was the highlight of Microsoft's Conference with the campaign footage, and Beast mode sounds brilliant. I was very encouraged to hear Cliff saying how they're looking to increase the scale of the game slightly and to make it somewhat less linear. Definitely my most wanted game at the moment.

Disappointments

I think my biggest disappointment with Microsoft's conference was that they didn't show more "core" Kinect games. I'm sure Microsoft want Kinect to appeal to both "core" and "casual" gamers. Games like the Harmonix one and the Rare sports game will prove very popular with "casual" gamers, but i would've liked them to show off some games aimed at "core" gamers as well. Stuff like, Milo and Kate, Ghost Recon with Kinect hand gestures for squad controls, Fable 3 with Kinect use or even Gears 3 using Kinect to do executions - just something says Kinect offers - or will offer - something for both "Core" and "casual" gamers.

Halo Reach - I don't want to label it a disappointment.....but more i'd say that it didn't wow me as much as i thought it would for some reason. It has everything i hoped for in a Halo game - multiple Spartans, bigger scale, darker tone and story - yet for some reason the campaign footage didn't amaze me as much as i thought it would.

Crysis 2 - I haven't watched any of the other media around other than what they showed at EA conference.....and from what they showed i was a little bit underwhelmed to be honest. Maybe it wasn't the best section to show off or something.

Biggest surprise for me was Black Ops. I really wasn't expecting much from it to be honest, but the footage they showed at Microsoft's conference impressed me quite a bit. The graphics look pretty good in my opinion and i think i'll keep an eye on this one.

Kane and Lynch 2 is another game that has surprised me. I'm definitely getting this when it comes out. I know most people hate them, but i was actually a fan of the characters in the first one - the game was just let down by poor controls and awkward shooting mechanics in my opinion. But it certainly looks like they've tightened things up for the sequel so it should be pretty damn good :)

Top 5 games of the show:

1) Need for Speed Hot Pursuit - Criterion + Hot Pursuit = best racer since Burnout 2
2) Journey - thatgamecompany nuff said
3) SOCOM 4 with Move support - Long time fan and this looks so good with Move
4) Child of Eden - Rez sequel, who could ask for more?
5) The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - New Zelda with 1:1 controls

If more was shown of LittleBigPlanet 2 and inFAMOUS 2 then they would right up there.

Top Nintendo Thing: The 3DS, potential of this machine is insane.

Top Microsoft Thing: Halo Reach, space combat takes it up notch

Top Sony Thing: Move not sucking

Disappointments:

No The Last Guardian.

Top 5 Games of the Show

1. Golden Sun: Dark Dawn - The mash of styles give me an FF7 vibe (Somewhat Chibi when running around, then realistic in battle), and the core game looks as good as ever. Plus it's out THIS HOLIDAY! Win for all.
2. Zelda: Skyward Sword - The moment I realised it was back to being cel-shaded is probably my favourite moment of the show. I was just expecting a nicer looking Twilight Princess, so the graphical style surprised me more than the other changes did. The controls look great, and I'm glad they really ran with the ideas seen in TP.
3. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 - I'm impressed with how much effort they're putting into this. I was just expecting a sequel with new characters, but they're really going out of their way to make it a stunning little package. It almost doesn't seem like a traditional fighting game anymore, based on the stuff they're saying.
4. Kirby's Epic Yarn - Everything about it looks fantastic, especially the way the gameplay and visuals work perfectly together.
5. Metal Gear Solid: Rising - I was expecting some sort of Devil May Cry thing with this, but the trailer caught me by complete surprise and the promises that you'll still be able to play it stealthily puts it back on my rader. I'm hoping for them to announce some MOVE based slashing soon.

Top Nintendo Thing: The 3DS tech.
Top Microsoft Thing: Xbox - Play. I loved all the stuff they showed related to Kinect controlling the Xbox interface. Seems like something right out of a Sci-Fi movie.
Top Sony Thing: Steam on PS3 sounds like such an interesting development, so I'll be watching to see how that plays out.

Dissapointments
No Hitman 5, no Last Guardian, and Rare only showed one game and it was basically Wii Sports. I was hoping for a few titles from them, and for them to be pretty original uses of Kinect too. They're obviously got more in the works, so I wish we had a glimpse of some of it. Tales of Graces seems dead forever too, but I had held out hope for a sneaky E3 announcement from Namco. :(

Top 5 games of the show:

1)Portal 2
2)Crysis 2
3)Rage
4)Gears Of War 3
5)Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Top Nintendo Thing: The 3DS.

Top Microsoft Thing: The Xbox 360 slim

Top Sony Thing: Steam/Cloud/Portal 2

Disappointments/Rants: The delay of Brink until 2011, no The Last Guardian footage, no Half Life 3 or Elder Scrolls V. Lack of any must have PC game showcases and the emphasis on motion control games. Kinetic and Move can strawberry float off! The fact that gamers seem to piss themselves with excitement over playing games they have already played years ago - Sly Cooper collection, the 3DS rehashes of Zelda: OOT, Metal Gear: Snake Eater, Star Fox etc etc. The Halo: Reach space combat which is just too much Ratchet and Clank for me.....

My top 5 games of the show: I'm gonna leave this out, it's going to make me look a massive nintendo fanboy (well even more then).

Top Nintendo Thing: 3DS by far, what an incredible piece of kit.

Top Microsoft Thing: Gears of War 3 was the only thing I was interested in, sadly (I'll get to this).

Top Sony Thing: Don't own a PS3 but the absolute sexyness of that Gran Turismo trailer.

Disappointments/Rants: The fact that I don't have a 3DS right now.

Seriously though, Microsofts over reliance on Kinect. Interesting piece of technology that has a lot of potential but made slightly redundant to me because of my living conditions (cramped). Would've liked more noteworthy games, Fable 3 looked great but I wasn't overly fussed on the second one. I can't really comment on Sony's conference. Also, on the more nit picky side, the aesthetics in the new Zelda game. I expected something different, I still think it's beautiful and all but it's not what I had in my head.

Okay, here's my Best Stuff of E3 (of everything I managed to get to see):

Top 5 playable games of the show

1) Kirby's Epic Yarn
2) Dance Central
3) NBA Jam
4) Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
5) Vanquish

Also good: Epic Mickey, Yakuza 4, Forza Kinect, Kinect Sports bowling, Limbo, Scott Pilgrim. Maybe even Halo Reach Firefight mode (though that may have been the absinthe that made me giggle like a maniac every time I used the jetpack).

Top 5 non-playable games of the show

1) Child of Eden
2) Portal 2
3) Gears of War 3
4) El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron
5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising

Top 5 3DS demos

1) Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D
2) Paper Mario
3) Nintendogs (+ Cats)
4) Pilotwings
5) Kid Icarus: Uprising

Top Game I Didn't See: Rage, apparently. Two or three journo chums came away absolutely raving about it.

Best Moment: Either five stars on Hella Good on Dance Central or beating Dan Greenawalt's score on Forza Kinect.

Top Nintendo Thing: 3DS, Kirby's Epic Yarn.

Top Microsoft Thing: Dance Central, Gears of War 3, new 360 (quiet as a mouse).

Top Sony Thing: Table tennis Move Sports thing, Gabe Newell.

Need More Time With: Zelda, DKCR. Both decent but neither dazzled as much as I would have hoped.

Disappointments: No Last Guardian, no Last Window, Sony's conference in general, the too-safe Kinect line-up (and Child of Eden not featuring more heavily), brevity of Fable III demo, too many sequels, nothing absolutely mind-blowing.

Flutter of Excitement: First post-briefing 3DS slideshow with pin-sharp Pikmin under 3D foliage made my heart skip a beat.

Have been too busy to actually check anything out properly, but the 3DS looks brill.

The Forza 3 demo made me want to pick up Forza 3, but only cos it's about a tenner and I loved 2.
