Far Cry 5 and Detective Pikachu are two games I'm currently playing and enjoying, but I can imagine people giving them a six, they both have problems.

I think A Way Out hasn't got the praise it deserves though, for certain aspects of the game. I wonder what I see differently to others in the game.

Some folk will be angry about those scores.

I think the SoT's one is about right, haven't played any of the rest.

2 of my mates played A Way Out and thought it was excellent.

Didn't read it all, but there seemed to be more consternation that Sea of Thieves got a 7 in relation to the 8 that God of War got, than just out right issue with the 8.

It's par for the course from EDGE though, they almost always give higher scores to games that are doing something a little different than they might otherwise get.

And conversely, they do hand out lower scores to games that could be perceived to be retreading old ground in the way that God of War does, even with its insane production values.

If it wasn't for these factors in play, you could easily have SoT being a 6 (for lack of variety) and God of War a 9 (for how polished it is), but that's just how EDGE reviews games in general, its strange people can't just accept that for what it is.

Which is why I thought A Way Out would score better. But I guess I need to read the review!

Yeah a bit harsh review for Far Cry 5, but then again it is essentially Far Cry 4, which in turn was Far Cry 3.

I think it does score better than it might otherwise have done.

I haven't played the whole thing (I'm passed the farmhouse part and the chase sequence that comes after it) but it is pretty rough round the edges. I'm enjoying it, but I wouldn't give it a higher score at this point.

That was quite the read, I didn't realise SoT's score being 1 point below GoW's one would trigger so many people.

The thing is SoT is 69 on Metacritic so a 7/10 is very much in line with general consensus. It’s also two different reviewers, so why would the scores be comparable anyway?

A lot of them seem to think it’s because Rare are British and Edge have a bias

Edge gonna Edge and all that. 8/10 is probably the right score for longevity as I can imagine GoW not aging that well as other games visuals start to catch up. If that turns out but to be the case they can just claim a misprint or do one of those revisions they did for Fallout 3, Dark Souls, etc.

Did Edge ever re-review the original Doom after scoring it an 8/10?

I vaguely remember in one of their "Greatest games" lists they mentioned the score and how they felt it was wrong as Doom had clearly brought far more to the table then they had originally summarised

Dunno about now, but Broken Sword 3 was given a 9 just to prove a nonexistent point ('that games like this can never get high scores but we will' was the basis of that forced editorial).

Tomous wrote:A lot of them seem to think it’s because Rare are British and Edge have a bias

That argument doesn't really wash, as who can forget the outstanding Project Gotham Racing 2 (British made) getting a 7. I think they even went as far to say it wasn't fun.

PGR 2 a 7 and "wasn't fun"?

I don't understand the logic of comparing game scores to one another out of context. I do wonder if Edge sit around a table and say "well, this guy's rated GOW an 8 and wrote text supporting it, and we've also got a review of SOT that's a 7, now are these one point apart on our arbitrary scale?".

And if they do, then do they do it for every other game that issue? Do hey say, well, is GOT actually 2 better than Far Cry? And do they then go look at the last issue and try and tie the scores together from that issue as well? And maybe even go back into the database and try and make sure it's on the same level as all other Edge 8s and tangibly 1 point better than all the 7s but clearly 1 worse than the 9s too.

Because this what happens on forums with Edge scores. Especially with the 10s too, as we always get games brought into the equation from 10 or 20 years ago.

Let's face it, it's always the number that gets discussed in those outrage threads. I don't think I've ever seen anyone bring a quote out from a review and argue against it.

They originally gave Doom a 7 actually.

There was a bit in the review about how it would have been interesting if you could talk to the creatures so you could make friends and form alliances.

EDGE is the last (or one of the last, I don't know if GamesTM still do it) that refuses to have bylines, therefore perpetuating the (pretentious) notion that they're a hivemind. That is what the magazine thinks. It's almost definitive. Their regidness also extends to refusing to re-review patched up games (Sea of Thieves is a perfect example of a game that should definitely be retested 6-12 months from now).

In comparison some magazines implemented box-outs that includ(ed) another writer's opinion, which occasionally differs (Xbox World did this, Official PlayStation still do it now).
