Twenty-five years of Edge! Wow! I recall buying issue 2 (I have no idea why I didn't pick up the first issue) and I liked the clean, modern styling. For my tastes I always found it a bit dry and lacking in personality but I can respect the idea of having a "grown up" game magazine.

What subscriber cover did you get, HSH?

I assume these are going to be available to everyone. Mine is Mario, apparently they've only printed 100 of the Knight Solaire copies, all signed by the artist.

Oh and there's some kind of game involving hidden quotes from each of the cover games and a key to unlock them. First person to email them to EDGE gets the original Solaire painting, next 10 get a box set of the 4 covers.

I imagine the dripping lines reaching the bottom of the page make a code in some fashion.

Interesting choice of the four characters, is there anything saying why they went with those 4?

Gonna have to pick this up.

Do they have anything special within the issue itself?

Might need to dig out my two issues of "FILE" and relive the anticipation for the 32-Bit Next Gen! 3DO is the future!

The artist's (Dave White) choice. There's a section at the beginning of the magazine about him and why he went with those 4.

The Game Changers article I suppose. 'Celebrating the watershed moments that shaped 25 years in interactive entertainment'.

Super Mario 64 - 3D Movement
Snake - Mobile gaming
Shenmue - QTEs
Braid - Indie games
Minecraft - Early Access
GTA III - Open worlds
Quake - WASD control
Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? - Casual games
World of Warcraft - Engagement
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Microtransactions

The key is apparently somewhere in the magazine. The quote is on the page inside the cover written in code.

Ah fair enough, those lines just looked suspicious to me!

I like most of those picks... Indie... Open Worlds... Casual... Engagement  . GTA III certainly was a huge step forward; I was (briefly) a PC gamer and that title was incredible at the time.

Oh, and "Micro"-transactions could well be the biggest change I've seen in gaming :( .

Meh.

Would have liked some older articles or something. One thing I liked about the earlier version of EDGE (And this goes for T3 as well), was that they would go really in-depth on the tech behind the games. I remember one article being about all the different audio stuff one studio was doing and it went into really deep detail. I didn't understand it all (At the time anyway), but it was interesting. They would tell you how things worked.

Ah well, FILE it is (Basically articles and some reviews from the first two years). Always makes me laugh to see Trip Hawkins bigging up 3DO as the future.

It perhaps could have been... I love the idea of an open console platform with manufacturers able to make their own version of the console based upon specific standards. It may have been great for the consumer, too. Alas, as with the earlier MSX machines attempt, the idea never really took off.

Oh looks, like if you have an iPad you can download the best from EDGE's first year for free. The Annual 93, no idea if its been available for a while or not.

Yeah that's pretty much what FILE was as well.

The early stuff is still a good read. Such a fantastic snapshot of where the industry was at that point, right on the cusp of PlayStation and the 3D revolution.

This version is new, looks like you are screwed if you don't have access to an iOS device though.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS!
I bought the first issue. I might have had issue 0. Then bought the first 100 which might still be in my old loft. The tone was dry and often self-important but pre-internet age it has the best news about cutting edge consoles. I loved the post E3 issues with loads of info about games. A couple had discs with clips of games (pre YouTube!). At its best it can dazzle with intelligent coverage and discussion about the future of gaming. I will get this issue.

25 years and I've never bought a single copy, they clearly don't need my support.

I don’t subscribe to edge anymore, however do pickup their special editions and landmark issues. I will look out for the mario one!
