I don't particularly mind them in terms of their content/writing style etc. They just seem to feel a burning desire to be needlessly contrarian for the sake of it.

They aren't, those are honestly-held opinions. How many years is it going to take for people to get this?

They aren't, those are shameful attempts at drawing attention by being different. How many years is it going to take for people to get this?

Joking of course. Neither you or I, or any other reader for that matter, can truly know the thoughts and feelings, the intentions and biases, the bungs and the backhanders, the honest opinions and pre-defined preferences, the bad days and happy days, and all the other myriad factors that impact the review process and percolate in the reviewers mind to result in a final score.

EDGE's policy of keeping reviews anonymous does make it impossible for the reader to "read between the lines" on a review though - e.g.if someone has a history of shitting on FPS games then I may not pay much attention to a low score from them, or if someone has constantly fawned over output from a single studio I may not be entirely swayed by their latest gushing over a new release from them. EDGE removes the ability for this nuanced interpretation from the reader.

Anyone know specifically why Wolf 2 is scored so low compared to all other reviews? Most are saying its the best FPS in a generation, just wondering what reasoning they've given for that score.

Basically boils down to it being more of the same and there being issues with the difficulty and pacing of the game.

While Giant Bomb have been kind of gushing over the game, they do seem to suggest that it's more down to the plot and world building than the actual game play.

Remember EDGE actually use the scale properly

So 5 is average (not 7 like most places)

I'm about halfway through and feel the same. The health pack system is needlessly archaic and the lack of player feedback when you're being shot just makes it worse. There's minor stuff, a little rumble, some blood when you're getting shot from the side, but it gets lost in the pace and the rumble of firing a gun. The story stuff is still great, but I find BJ's voiceover a bit too dour and trite

I thought exactly the same about the first one (and the prequel thingy). They're heralded as being some amazing examples of the genre but I found them pretty generic personally.

I don't know what the controversy is about... so this month Edge reviewed some good, average, and above average games? What exactly is so shocking about that set of scores?

No.

So which one of those games got jipped the most?

I've played Wolf 2 and I can see where the 7 comes from. I'd probably award it a "high" 8. I mean I bloody loved it, but it's not better than the original, nor would I say it was better than or equal to Doom.

Yeah. Not played it myself but several friends have had nothing but good things to say.

I can see how some people would not rate the game at all. I enjoyed my time with it but I dropped it before finishing it, it definitely didn't live up to my hopes and I probably wouldn't buy a sequel.
