Welcome to the 2017 edition of The 100 Greatest Videogames. If you’re not familiar with the format, here are our rules. In compiling this list, we worked to simple criteria: all formats – portable, touchscreen, console, PC, whatever – were eligible; we could include only a single entry from any series that features straight-up sequels; and each game had to stand up today rather than making the cut for reasons of nostalgia or historic significance.

Not all of the games featured here are new, however. In fact, some of the most invigorating parts of the curation process involved pulling out and replaying a number of the most seasoned titles from the Edge archives. Hopefully this much-argued-over collection will inspire you in the same way.

For people who have played it, I can see why it's sitting at number 1. It's not perfect but they really made a world worth exploring and that is a huge feat in itself.

Somewhat surprised to see The Witcher III languished at number 56.

So Zelda is on the list five times, basically because they're not numbered sequels. Everything else gets one entry.

That's a pretty decent top 10, only one I've not played is BotW. I know this sort of thing is highly subjective but no Final Fantasy VII has me genuinely shocked.

I've put hundreds of hours into gtao but it baffles me whenever I see GTAV get such high praise.

Overall I don't think it's that great a list. Seems skewed towards modern somewhat too

Can't argue too much with that top 10.

Only one Xbox exclusive (39. Halo 3) in the entire list

I always think with lists like this that there should be a 5 year or so time limit before a game/movie/album/whatever can be considered. I haven’t played it and I am sure it is fantastic but it just seems too early in its life to say that BotW is the greatest game of all time.

How Batman: Arkham Knight is on that list, I do not know.

Don't know how I feel about Destiny being so high. I mean, at one point I was addicted to it but is it really that good of a game? If we're talking just Vanilla then no.

It's not even the best game of this year.

That's true. Added it the title to avoid unnecessary arguments.

I'm not. Edge are really weird when it comes to a lot of big WRPGs and seem to almost always score them lower than everywhere else.

There do seem seem to be anomalies to the Modern title, but Tetris I can understand as that's been reinvented and re-released so many times it's practically timeless. See also PacMan.

Thought it would be interesting to see where I land

47 played substantially
6 played only a little
12 not played but I have played another game in the series which is similar (e.g. I've not played Dark Souls but I've played some of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 2)
35 not played

Pretty decent coverage
